“Like not even being in Hawaii”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012 via mobile

First the positives. Very clean. Good tv reception. Grounds are nice. Bed was comfortable. Check in staff was nice. Ok view of crashing waves, but getting in the water here is near suicidal.

In the pool area are numerous off putting signs warning that pool and courtyard area are only for guests. You are warned that you must wear a plastic orange wrist band to be in this area. It doesn't seem to be enforced, but is definately a non mellow Kauai vibe to put out there. The place has a restraunt. We never ate there as the menu was not interesting, and expensive.

If you want to travel to Hawaii and feel like you have never left the 48 continental USA and want clean sterile place to stay, you will like it here. If you close your eyes, or even with your eyes open, you could be in Orlando, or San Diego. If you prefer a Hawaii with trade wind breezes, open windows with the sounds of wind and waves, and tropical birds in the morning, then surely Kauai has better options.

We pre paid our rooms for a week at what seemed to be a great rate. If we had not, we would have left the first day.

Mahalo for your feedback and for your business. I'm glad you had a clean and comfortable room but disappointed you didn't try our restaurants. We receive many great comments about our service and food quality. Hopefully next time we can entice you to try them. As other resorts on the island we do have guests asking us to ensure pool facilities are only available to resort guests so you will find similar wristband programs to manage this issue. I apologise if this offended or inconvenienced you in any way. Thank you for choosing the Courtyard Kauai Resort and we hope you will choose us again when you return to Kauai. Aloha

This property has gone through many owners. The last time I stayed there (not Marriott), the rooms were musty and the Internet slow. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the hotel was renovated and the musty smell is gone. The layout of the rooms are nice with plenty of room. The beds were comfortable. And the Internet access was much better.

Room Tip: I have always gotten a room with the mountain view.

Our stay at this hotel was amazing. Laid back atmosphere with a very friendly staff. Located right on beach with spectacular views of the ocean. Bentley, Damon (Mary), and Charles definitely made us feel special. I would recommend this hotel over a high end resort any day. The food was amazing and lounge very nice. Rooms were spacious and comfortable. The pool and hot tub looked spectacular at night and the beach was right out our back door. Hotel centrally located with many options for restaurants and stores. Special thanks to the front desk staff who made check-in so nice.

Room Tip: Ocean views amazing for sunrises

We had attended a meeting in Poipu, then moved to this less expensive hotel, available for free with our airplane miles. I liked it better than the expensive resorts in Poipu. Nice pool and hot tub, while being right on the beach. Comfortable and much fancier rooms than the Sheraton. More low key and ability to walk a mile to downtown Kapaa for great food at good prices, unlike at the Grand Hyatt resort in Poipu. This was a great place. Nice location, price and hotel room. Both of us preferred it to the other resorts. My parents stayed at the Kauai Inn and they prefer that place. They paid $83/night and had breakfast. They liked staying at the modest local Hawaiian owned place.

This hotel is amazing. We loved it from the outset. The grounds are lovely from when you arrive at the hotel. The hotel has a nice casual feel, with day beds and hammocks scattered through the pool/beach area.

Our room had a lovely ocean view from the 3rd floor. Room was nicely decorated with only the slightly dated bathroom letting it down.

We ate in the restaurant for daily breakfast and once for evening meal. Food was of good quality and reasonable. Great atmosphere with casual dining.

We only found one issue with the hotel and that was the tiresome check in and check out. Our room wasn't ready when we arrived at 2pm (despite having advised the hotel prior that we required early check in) and reception advised us that they would call us when the room was ready. Unfortunately they didn't but wasn't too bad as we spent the hour or so exploring the hotel. Check out was just as painful, standing in the queue for 20 mins when we had a plane to catch was not fun. If the hotel can sort reception out, they would have a more polished product.

As it was, we would definitely return to this hotel. We completely loved it and it's location. Would recommend it to people wanting to stay in a smaller resort with not too many rooms, seeking relaxation with amenities close by.

Room Tip: Ocean view is a must

You know how so many Hawaii hotel reviews say 'showing its age"? Well this one, directly on the ocean near Kapaa is spiffy and new-looking. Subdued colors, no loud florals here. A nice, mid-class Courtyard. This is more a 'people's' area, not your upscale resorts, no sunsets, but sunrise. Our compact (code for 'small') room was immaculate and new-looking, including a coffee maker and a mini-fridge. Complimentary tea is available near the front desk. The view from the room and tiny lanai was what merits the 5th star (see tip below). Be prepared for the $14 parking charge. Attractive small oceanfront pool area with fires at night. Not much landscaping, but did I mention oceanfront, next to what looks like a park? Staff was friendly and helpful, thanks. They were really busy, but we were willing to wait a couple of hours for a great view, and they delivered. You're really in Hawaii now!

Room Tip: Odd numbers in the 70s and 80s have unobstructed beach and mountain views. Our room was 471, and the...
