We just got back from a wonderful family vacation - a total of 15 of us stayed in 5 condos at the Pono Kai. It was a perfect choice for us. The first-floor 2-bedroom unit was especially good for hosting dinners with BBQs nearby and the kids (ages 5-15) loved playing soccer on the grass right outside our door. The grounds were well manicured, the pool and BBQs well-maintained and when we experienced a plumbing problem on a Friday evening, the maintenance people were there immediately to repair it. The only negative was the internet connection . . very slow response, but perhaps a good thing for all of us to get away from our fast-paced life on the mainland.

Room Tip: Would recommend Building "A" for view of the ocean and close parking lot. Only negative w...

We were in a larger two bedroom unit and it seemed poorly constructed. We could hear everything that was going on upstairs. My husband and I had to share a room with twin beds that were too short. The service and staff was only okay. They try to charge for the internet and as a consequence, it never really works and is very frustrating. The beach in front was nice. The pool was too small for the number of people and was often crowded. They did have handicapped access to both the pool and hot tub that I had never seen before. It looks to be set up for an older crowd. I thought they were stingy with towels and it was a long walk to housekeeping to trade. They do not clean the rooms. On the plus side we had a nice kitchen that had everything we needed along with plates, bowls and pans and silverware. Our family was renting four units at the same time and they weren't able to put us closer together which we found disappointing. There is a croquet court (the mallets are in bad shape), a putting green and a volleyball net. There are several grills for bbqs but only a few of them have a picnic table. Great shaved ice and a good restaurant across the street.

Room Tip: Large units look like they were added later and not constructed well. I would go with the smaller un...

I have been a time share holder for a 2 bedroom unit here for the past 8 years. I have not only enjoyed the location of the resort, the spaciousness of the units, the amenities, the cleanliness of the grounds & the units themselves, but most especially the staff who over the years have bent over backwards to make sure that my family is well taken care of.

I simply would not have any problem in highly recommending this older resort complex in the heart of a most beautiful island.

Room Tip: They also have 1 bedroom loft rooms which can accommodate a larger group for the price of a 1 bedroo...

I found the Pono Kai resort to be charming with helpful staff who even directed me where I could find an out of the way shop that made lovely reasonably priced leis. Major drawback was weak and intermittent WIFI available only in the lobby area. The signal strength was way too weak to reach the rooms although it is advertised. I must check messages daily. Get a third floor unit if possible. You will hear others walking above you. Terrific location to walk anywhere. I love the family low key feel compared to higher end timeshares I visit.

Room Tip: Ocean view and third floor are best.

We have a beautiful view and the unit is very roomy for the four adults here. The second bedroom is warm at night due to the fact that it has no a/c. The kitchen and bathrooms need some updating but they have been maintained fairly well. There are no baseboards. The caulking in the bathrooms is very sloppy. The kitchen and bathroom floors are vinyl and the cabinetry throughout the unit has seen better days. The closet doors throughout are akward and very ugly. For the money and location, I expected things to be a bit nicer. The decor is stuck in the early 80's which is odd because the carpeting seems very new. The unit is clean and the linens are fresh and clean. The pros outway the cons, so we would stay here again. The only real complaint we have is the noisy, loud, creaking floor boards, and there some roaches under the sink. I feel so bad for the people staying below us!! Now that I know what to expect, I would return if our other in-network properties are not available. The grounds are very beautiful and kept up very well. The area is quaint and we love spending time here. The beach area isn't very people friendly, as there are sink hole warning signs all over the place.

The Pona Kai resort is located pretty much in the center of the island just north of the airport.. You can go North or South where as if you stay on the North Shore if you want to go anywhere else it's a longer drive. The resort is older but we have stayed there for about 10 years now and have always found it well kept. There is a bike trail right in front of it and it goes 6 miles and I highly recommend it. You can rent bikes in town. Also the town of Kapaa is really relaxed and has a few good bar and grills etc within walking distance. Also grocery stores which we always go to and eat dinners from the grills by the units. Right next to Pona Kai you can go sport fishing and again walking distance. There are great waterfalls and hiking within just a few minutes drive. Also a municipal golf course that you can play for $45 just a few minutes away. We have always been completely happy with this resort.

Room Tip: Some of the two bedrooms have the master bedroom facing the ocean with large windows. Our Unit is g...

Mahalo for your review of the Pono Kai Resort. I am not sure if you stayed in one of the condos our vacation rental company manages, but we appreciate your kind words about the grounds, locations, and nearby activities. The Pono Kai really is in a fantastic central location for exploring all the island has to offer!

We spent 1 week at Pono Kai in the largest (2 bedroom) unit. I'd give Pono Kai the equivalent of a 3 star hotel rating. It's a nice place and the employees were all friendly and helpful. The location of Pono Kai can't be beat. You can easily walk to shops and restaurants. Pono Kai isn't what you'd call an upscale complex (with granite countertops and travertine tile), but the units are very nice and comfortable and we were very happy with our unit. The units are a little dated but I understand they are slowly remodeling them. Most importantly, the beds were comfortable. In our unit, the master bedroom had a king size bed and the second bedroom had a queen. The second bedroom in our unit did not have air conditioning so the occupants of that room were a little warm during their stay. There were air conditioners in the living room and master bedroom. The grounds are meticulously kept up. You can borrow beach towels, beach chairs and beach mats from Housekeeping, so no need to bring your own. They have a mini putting green and croquet, and outdoor BBQ grills. The beach area is small (not much beach before you hit the water) but it's still adequate. Our only disappointment was that the air conditioning units are located on the lanai. They put out a lot of heat when they're running so it was nearly impossible to sit on the lanai to enjoy the views. Don't forget to check out Tropical Dreams ice cream store in the Safeway shopping center, next to Panda Express. Great soft serve (and hand dipped ice cream)! Once we found it, we headed there every day.

Room Tip: Choose Units A or B as they are close to the beach with little or no ocean view obstruction.
