This was perfect for us. I prefer Kapaa over Poipu as it is quieter and slower paced.I had read some reviews and was concerned about noise, but it wasn't bad, and the chickens didn't wake us, either. If you don't like chickens or crowing, Kauai is not the island for you! We enjoyed our stay at Pono Kai, and hope to return.

Thank you for your review of the Pono Kai Resort. I am not sure if you stayed in one of the condos our vacation rental company manages, but glad to hear you had an enjoyable stay at the Pono Kai! We hope to see you again in the future.

Check in was easy and quick. Front desk staff were all extremely helpful and firendly as well as knowledgeable of the area ! Room was comfortable. Tho ' walls were thin... Orientation was extremely helpful if you will be doing activities on the island. They also give away 2 for 1 's to alot of activities ! They are not pushy regarding their time share sales. Great location. Restaurant, bike rentals right next door ! Great bike path on ocean right at hotel! Shopping, ABC within walking distance ( 5 min ) In my opinion best beach is minutes away Kealia Beach less than 10 min away by car. Must see Waimea Canyon Make sure you go all the way to the top ! Awesome !

Room Tip: If available oceanview upgrades for a minimal cost

We stayed here through a condo swap. Was a little concerned after reading the reviews. We were pleasantly surprised. Pool was nice and never too crowded. Great location on the island for exploring the north and south ends of the island. Beautiful sunrise right on the water. Room was clean, master bedroom was huge and had a king bed. Quiet, which we like. Walking distance to some good restaurants. Full kitchen was very helpful to keep costs down.

It was just my husband and I in the 2- bedroom place (that was what was available for the swap). My ONLY issue would have been if we had stay with others who would have had to stay in the bed that was up in a loft (I don't think considered a bedroom since no doors) or in the other bedroom at the back of the hotel because there was a A/C unit in the master and then one in the living room that had to cool down the living room, kitchen, lofted bed, and second bedroom. Pretty sure we would have been miserably hot staying in that back bedroom.

We stayed at Pono Kai for our honeymoon. The overall experience was great. The room was clean but dated. The grounds of the resort were very clean and had a continuous maintenance crew working to keep up the appearance. Our room had a great lanai (balcony) that had a view of the ocean. It was very soothing to sit out and enjoy a beer (Sam Adams anyone;) )

We were on the third floor (top) and it was very quiet. There was an elevator available for use at the other end of the building we were in (which was very helpful when leaving with all our luggage!) The unit next to us was under renovation so there were workers there during the day (9-5) and no one at night.

We were a little hesitant to participate in the "island orientation" expecting a dry sales pitch on why owning a timeshare is great...blah blah blah. .. We were wrong! They gave away free stuff!!! They had local excursion businesses explain their services and they raffled off one "buy one get one" for all of the presenters. Each couple that was there, received SOMETHING for free!!!

This resort is centrally located on the island which is fantastic for those that want to get out and see the island (which is why you're there.....right??) It's about 15 minutes away from the Lihue airport (just after the bridge).

There is a bike/walking path in between the resort and the ocean that is worth taking a stroll down. It's fairly flat and great views. There always seemed to be people on it but it never seemed crowded.

There is a shave ice stand next door (Ono Ono Ice) It is a fantastic treat!! Pick out a few flavors and take this yummy treat back to your room :) We tried sharing the first one.....it's yummy enough to eat your own!

You get what you pay for....This hotel isn't a five star hotel but is a fantastic choice!

didn't use pool, shuffle board, croquet, putting green, propane grills, tennis court

Thank you for your review of the Pono Kai Resort. I don’t believe you stayed in one of the vacation rentals our condo management company oversees, but I am glad to hear you enjoyed the property. The location is great for exploring the island and the nearby coastal bike/walking trail is always a fun treat!

Happy travels,

My husband and I stayed at Pono Kai Resort July 6-13-2013. This was our first time staying at this resort and I had read all of the reviews on this site. Of course some with raving reviews others with minimal complaints. We found the resort to be very nice to stay at and really enjoyed our time there. We did not have an ocean view but found it in NO way unpleasant. We stayed in building J, Room 206. From our lani we faced the tennis courts and gardens. I did find if I looked to my left bettwen some other buildings I could actually see a little bit of the ocean. The ground at Pono Kai Resort are beautifully kept, garden area so colorful and we really enjoyed looking at the fish in the pond. At night they light the torches which make for a romantic atmosphere. The location is GREAT; it is right on the beach with a bike/walking path that is so enjoyable to walk along; taking in the georgeous view. We were able to park our car right in front of our building which made easy access to carrying groceries up to our room. Even though our building had only a partial kitchen we found it fit our needs perfectly. The pool and hot tub were great. It was not overly crowded and with so many other things to do on the island it did not seem to matter that it was the only one on the grounds. It was also VERY nice to be within walking distance of the town of Kappa. Everyday we would walk out of our resort to the sidewalk out front and take in the shops and places to eat in town. Ono Family Restraurant right next door has GREAT shaved ice only $3.50 if you wanted to add a scoop of icecream to it just add $1.50; definitely can be shared. It is a MUST do. We ate at Chicken in a Barrell which was DELICIOUS! We got the sampler plate with a side of cole slaw and shared it between the two of us. Cost about $15. Pleanty of food. We wanted to try eating something from Pono Market right down the street ( alot of locals eat there) but we ran out of time. I did hear it was worth trying. Pono Kai Resort is only about a 20 minute drive from the Lihue Airport. We did bring our GPS along which made it nice to drive to different places; although driving around Kauai is really not difficult. When in Hana Bay area we ate lunch at Kalypso Restaraunt, food was good and atmosphere nice. If you want GOOD Eggs Benedict; you must go to Eggberts which is also in Kappa it is excellent; in fact we ate there twice. We went on the Blue Dolphin Napali Coast Dinner Cruise which was very nice. BEAUTIFUL views of the coast. There are several different companies that do these charters. I am sure they are all comperable. Don't forget to try the Farmers Markets they are different days throughout the island. Apple Bananas are delecious as are the pineapples. In fact everything is so good! I could go on and on about how much we enjoyed our stay there. We found the staff to be very friendly and accomadating. We would not hesitate to stay there again should we return to the island. ENJOY & ALOHA!

Room Tip: We were in the J206 building even though it was not ocean front we found it still pleasant. We were on the 2nd floor. We had no problems with noises from above us. The view onto the tennis courts and garden area was nice.
