This is an older resort, and although there are a few drawbacks, all in all it was great for us. My husband and my son (age 10) spent 7 nights there in July. It was a lovely room with a view of the perfect ocean; there was a bedroom, a kitchen, and a foldout bed. In Kapa'a, you are pretty much near everything; you can drive north or south and reach any destination on the island in a pretty short amount of time. The small town of Kapa'a was much to our liking. It's a funky beach town that lacks the polish of Hanalei, but that was fine with us. People were very friendly and we felt like locals in no time.

The drawback: the air conditioning. There was one unit at the very front of the room, and it cooled the living room very well, but did not reach the bedroom. This made for pretty difficult sleeping since Kauai in July gets pretty warm. It's also on a timer, so if you forgot to set it before you went out, you came back to an unbearably hot room. They should seriously check into this and maybe some of the units have better AC than others....but it was a problem for us.

The staff is very friendly and helpful, and the pool area is great for kids and adults. You can rent cheap snorkel equipment right at the hotel, which is great, and there is a masseuse on site also (for an extra fee). Laundry facilities available, lovely gardens, barbecues outside, and a few steps from the beach. What's not to like, really?

Room Tip: Third floor has great views and no foot traffic going by your room. Bring earplugs if noise bothers you; the walls are fairly thin.

We loved the location of this resort, not crowded at all and in such a great location. We walked all over the little town of Kapaa, some great restaurants, love the farmer's market. We would be happy to stay here again!

Thank you for your review of the Pono Kai Resort. I am not sure if you stayed in one of the vacation rentals we manage at the property, but glad to hear you enjoyed your stay and the location. There are so many fun things to see in Kapaa and other attractions to the north or south are just a 30 to 40-minute drive.

My parents have a time share and this is my third time staying here. I love the location and the bike trail so close by. The view from our room was amazing and we really enjoyed the pool and hot tub. The rooms were nice and clean and the staff very friendly. I can't wait to go back.

We enjoyed our week stay at the Pono Kai Resort Kapaa Hawaii, stayed for one week Dec. 29th to Jan. 05th... very casual resort, no restaurant on site, but lots nearby, some walking distance.... Loved the helicopter tour over the island, loved the horseback riding in Princeville area, loved the bicycle riding up the path along the beach, lots of fun things to do, lots of great restaurants to try, enjoyed the Lemon Grass Grill very much, I would recommend this resort....

Room Tip: we had a room on the ground floor, walked right out our balcony to the beach

Thank you for review of the Pono Kai Resort. I am not sure if you stayed in one of the condos our vacation rental company manages, but I am glad you enjoyed the grounds and close proximity to restaurants and tourist attractions. The beachfront bike trail is definitely a treat for guests who like to exercise. Happy travels.

These condos are well priced, very clean and if you get an ocean front unit - Fantastic. Another great thing is they are centrally located 1/2 way between both the north and south shores of Kauai. We went with a group of 4 so we decided to be in 2 condos and spread out. The 2 bedroom units are quite spacious (1300 square feet or so?) and have 2 full bathrooms as well.
The ocean front units have stunning views and the property is smack in the middle of Kapaa. That means that within a block or two there are places to rent bikes, get a shave ice, restaurants, and a great selection of shops.
On the downside, although nothing is shabby looking -the units could all stand an update/remodel including new furniture and appliances. We were told they are remodeling the bathrooms and were working on bldg. J when we were there- yay! I'd love to see a washer and dryer in each unit as it would be wonderful if you did not have to go to the laundry room (in each building).
If you are looking for a luxury vacation rental - this place is not for you head to the Hyatt or the St Regis. For the rest of us this place is Great - the staff friendly and everything in the unit was in perfect working order. Oh and since they recently replaced all the mattresses - you get a wonderful nights sleep. Pono Kai is Safe, clean and comfortable and very well located :) Aloha

Room Tip: Ocean front - especially in bldg. D :)
