We absolutely loved Pono Kai especially the walking trail right out front. My wife and I were in bldg. A 4/19-4/26 we walked every morning along the ocean through town. The trail is concrete so there are people walking, running or biking on the same path but it is uncrowded. The resort in centrally located in Kapaa so you can explore either the north shore/Princeville area or the south Poipu area with ease. There are plenty of restaurants right outside the resort, Ono Family Rest. is just about 100 ft. from the side entrance. The Pono Kai is not a 5 star resort but is a nice place that won't break the bank.

We have owned at Pono Kai since 1987 and have wached this little resort go through all sorts of trials and tribulations, from management company changes to hurricane Iniki, and it always comes out better and better. My husband and I were married on the beach in front of building C and we try to return every year for our anniversary!

We love it so much, we recently bought a second week at the resort and will go for two weeks this September!

The beach here is a bit steep for swimming, yet is ideal for walking ... and there is a wonderful path we like to stroll every morning just outside your door.

  • Liked — great oceanfront location ... you never need to leave!
  • Disliked — some guests can get a bit rowdy at night requiring a call to the front desk!

We booked this resort through RCI using our points from owning a timeshare in Sedona, AZ. At the time of booking, we were told that we could not request an ocean view or ocean front unit. They said we would have to contact the resort for that. I called the resort and was told that it would depend on availability at the time of arrival. Upon check-in, we were told we were scheduled in a garden view unit. We asked about getting an ocean view even and offered to pay the difference. The front desk staff did some checking and were able to give us an almost ocean front unit for no additional charge. When we went to the unit, we found that it was a 2 bedroom unit and we booked a 1 bedroom. I called the front desk to make them aware of the mistake and was told that it was no mistake. The Pono Kai staff shows a wonderful aloha spirit and we had a fabulous view!!

Just came back from a week plus 1 1/2 days(thanks to Aloha Airlines shutdown). We had an oceanview 2 br and wished we had an ocean front to see the wonderful sunrises better. We had a combo DVD/VCR. Also liked having a high speed internet connection (it cost $40/week or $10/day.) Really missed not having Tivo on vacation.
Location is ideal with many restaurants in walking distance and if lazy you can drive and park fairly easily.
We biked up the beach path and would suggest finding good bicycles as the wind makes going north a challenge on the leg muscles. Found a monk seal sunning itself on the rocks on the ride up.
The Ultimate Kauai tour book was a great guide for things to see and do.

We stayed 8 nights at Pono Kai and enjoyed every minute. We have three kids (13, 11 and 7) and this place was perfect for us. Pono Kai is located in Kapa'a, which is a wonderful little town on the east shore of Kauai. We walked into town on a number of occasions for "shave ice" and other goodies. We loved the central location. Nothing is more than 40 minutes away from Kapa'a.

Down the road, a five minute drive, is a great beach where my 13 year old learned to surf. Ten minutes away is Lidgate Park, a great family spot for snorkeling, swimming, picnic, etc.

As for the resort, it has a small, but very adequate pool. The hot tub is nearby. Tennis courts, basketball hoop, 18 hole putting course, shuffleboard and croquet are all available to keep the kids busy. There is a great beach in front of the units. One day we found a monk seal (a very endangered species) sunning herself on the beach right in front of our unit.

Weber gas grills are scattered throughout the complex so you can grill your favorite island fish. The grounds are very clean and quiet.

We stayed in unit A-308, which I rented directly from the owner, Mike P. Search the web for Pono Kai A-308 or go to "yougot2go.com" for pictures and information. Mike has very reasonable rates (much better than what the front desk can offer you for an oceanfront unit). Mike has stocked the unit with everything you need ... boogie boards, beach towels, cribs, playpen, cooler, board games, 3 TVs including a 52" plasma tv in the family room, DVDs for the whole family, and my kids' favorite ... Play Station 2 with numerous games to choose from. A-308 has been recently renovated with new tile floors, countertops, cupboards and appliances.

While my kids' opinions may differ, the greatest thing about our condo was the ocean view. You can't get a better view of the ocean unless you are on a cruise ship. Caution: not all units have this view so be careful where you book your room.

Pono Kai was perfect for our family of five. We will return. In fact we liked it so much we had a real estate agent show us a unit that is for sale. We learned that not all of the units at Pono Kai have been updated so, again, be careful.

  • Liked — Great oceanfront location and view. Very family friendly.
  • Disliked — Nothing.

We booked this online and I was a little apprehensive that it wouldn't live up to the pictures but it sure did. We stayed at the Pono Kai for a week. The staff are very friendly and helpful should you need any suggestions of things to see or do or how to get some place. The hotel is very clean and there are several buildings. We were on the third floor which you can walk up to or take an elevator. Our room was very clean, air conditioned, had ceiling fans and furnished in a Polynesian style. My husband thought we were getting just a bedroom and bathroom so to have an apartment style suite complete with kitchen, TV, VCR etc and balcony or lani was wonderful. We spent many mornings and evenings sitiing on the lani enjoying the ocean views or just reading a book. The resort has a great pool and hot tub as well as BBQ's available if you wanted to barbeque a steak. We had such a busy schedule that we opted to eat out most of the time. The hotel offers other amenities as well such as lawn bowling and a putting green. The only draw back to this place is that the roosters and chickens are allowed to roam around the property and we were awakened at 3 or 4 in the morning seveal mornings. I expect one would get used to the roosters eventually if you stayed long enough. This was our first visit to Kauai but it won't be our last. It is a gorgeous island with so much to see and do you won't be bored. IIn order to do the island justice you need a week or 10 days to explore and another week or so to relax at all the different beaches. I felt like we barely scratched the surface but it is definitely on my top ten destination list. I would stay at the Pono Kai again and definitely would recommend it. The price was reasonable and in a location far enough from the airport to not be bothered by air traffic and easily accessible to most places on the island. There are plenty of good restaurants close by to eat. The hotel does not have its own restaurant, it would be a wonderful additon to the property if they had one.

  • Liked — Clean, wonderful suite, affordable, home away from home; friendly staff
  • Disliked — Roosters, no restaurant on site of the resort

Pono Kai is a number of condo buildings near the really cool little town of Kapa'a on the east coast of Kauai. We got a 1 bedroom unit (E305) and others in our group were in a 2 bedroom unit (E303). E303 actually has a king bedroom, a queen bedroom, and a queen in a second story loft, so it comfortably sleeps 6 without using the pull out couch that is also there. Both units had a nice view of the ocean, but the beach is very abbreviated (at least in March) and has lots of coconuts and junk on it. It isn't groomed. Also, there is no beach directly in front of the E units because there are sinkholes and the water is the whole way up to the protection wall.

There is a nice paved walkway that goes all the way past the town which is a little north of Pono Kai resorts. The town has a great little Italian restaurant and some nice little coffee shops. Scotty's beachside barbeque was a cool place too, right on the walkway.

There is a great garden with a fishpond and a pool and hot tub in the middle of the grounds and the grass is manicured and kept up very well.

All in all, a great place to stay and I wish we would have been there longer.

  • Liked — It was very well kept and Kapa'a is close enough for a stroll.
  • Disliked — The beach is a little small.
