This resort is in a great location on the most beautiful of the islands of Hawaii. It is not the most luxurious resort, but the value is excellent. We stayed in a one bedroom unit (K building) with a mini kitchen (refrigerator, sink, blender, microwave) that sleeps 4. If you have a choice get a room that has an ocean view. The grounds of the resort are beautiful and the resort is well located.

Don't miss going to Waimea Canyon, Hanalei Bay, and take either a plane or helicopter tour of the island.

If you want to sample excellent food at reasonable prices, go to Hamura's Saimin, Garden Island BBQ, Mark's Place (lunch only and no seating) and Oki Diner. Of course, now that they have a Costco in Lihue, the hot dogs aren't bad either!

We stayed at the Pono Kai for ten days. It was a great resort. It's one of the older ones on the island, but has been renovated in recent years. We stayed in a HUGE (approx. 1100 square feet) 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom condo with an ocean view.

This place was just fine for our needs. The pool was nice, not anything fancy but very well maintained. The grounds around the condos are great, the coy pond is lovely, and the grounds offer croquette, shuffleboard, and a putting green which is nice. Many of the units (although not all) face the ocean.

For us a kitchen was a big selling point, as we didn't want to spend gobs of money going out to eat at every meal. The kitchen was fully stocked and spaciously appointed. Housekeeping service was great, they came in every other day with fresh linens and about once a week for a full cleaning. Every staff member was sweet and kind.

One thing you may want to partake in are the coupons if you listen to a timeshare presentation. Hopefully you're smart enough not to buy one--it took us a few hours of boredom and fierce sales tactics to get through it, but it was worth it to save $100 on a helicopter ride. However, if you're not here for long and don't want to go through the presentation, skip it.

Overall I think Pono Kai was very reasonably priced and spacious. It has a good location in Kapaa, close to all the grocery stores, several eateries, etc. I would return!

My family stayed at Pono Kai in August of 2007 for my parents 50th Anniversary. We all have different size families, and got to experience 3 different condo layouts from the studio to the presidential suite. All were great, well maintained and met our needs. Pono Kai is a beautiful property, with great views. The rooms are clean and kept up well, even though the property is older. It's quiet and very secure. We loved it so much, we're going back this year! The only down side, is the housekeeping staff was not very organized, or very good for that matter. Their mid-week cleaning was sub-par once they actually arrived. Luckily, there are vacuums and brooms in the condos.

Just got back from a weeks stay at Pono Kai. Resort is very nicely landscaped and the location is ideal. Close to every part of the island. The hotel is old. You can hear a lot of noise of the people walking above you. The view of the ocean is lovely and housekeeping was every other day. We were not expecting top notch and we did not get it. It was just a place to lay our heads after a day of sightseeing of going the beach. Lydgate beach was just 10 min. away and great!! The only negative I have to say is that the pool there is freezing!!!!!!! It was so cold, my kids would not even go in it. overall it was fine for our needs, but don't expect anything special

Stay: 1/30-2/5
Comfortamble and clean rooms. One bedroom apts really convenient. Hskp could have been better. Front desk not the most attentive. Centrally located-close to Lihue airport.
No nite life, restaurants and bars close early.
Kauai a little rainy this time of year. Great island to explore especially by 4x4. Some great hikes and beautiful views; Na Pali Coast, Waimea Canyon, North Shore, etc.
Planning on another trip to Kauai...

went in early january. stayed at kauai sands for a few nights, then pono kai. had oceanfront, top level 1BR in the B building. it's definitely dated, and we were a little disappointed to find the bedroom faced out on the walkway/stairway... until we found THE LOFT!!!!! the top level (3rd floor) units have a loft that had a bed, love seat, closet, etc. No TV up there, but that's better off. It got warm during the day (we didn't use the AC, but could have) but it would cool off at night, and it was worth being able to listen to the waves all night long. Didn't spend a lot of time in the unit, but did dinner on the lanai one night... again, not super fancy, but the place was only $170/night, and we were sitting there watching the ocean... can't really complain, considering the other prices you find on the island!! would have loved to stay longer and take more advantage of the resort. rented snorkel gear, but never hit the hot tub...

if you're like us, and doing hawaii on the semi-cheap, this is a good place. it was a splurge for us, and worth the money. i can't imagine paying $400/night for other places. we loved the location, the sunrises, and NOT being in poipu. that place looks like tourist central. you can stay cheaper at the kauai sands, which is similar location, and also on the water, but it's a motel room vs a condo. having the kitchen was nice, and having a little more room always makes you a little less frazzled.

went to scotty's bbq, you can walk to that, it was a great dinner place. probably good for lunch bc then you can see the view. also went to the nearby sushi place, and loved that too. got coffee at java kai almost every morning.

would go back in a second!!!
