Mokihana is very conveniently located and had everything we needed for our Kauai adventure. Easy to fix breakfast in the room, or walk along the beach to Eggberts for a morning treat. We walked to Wailua River Guides and had the fun of a half day river trip and hike without driving anywhere. The attached restaurant, The Bullshed, was also good for dinner, and other great eating places just a few minutes down the road. Most days we took off to explore and were gone til evening. Slept very well with the sounds of the surf, and awoke to the dawn over the Pacific. No fuss here.

Stayed at the Mokihana for two weeks...for Hawaii on a budget, this is the answer.
Nicely kept grounds...spotless swimming pool. Grills available...get up early and enjoy a beautiful sunrise on a chaise with a cup of coffee...centrally located...not the Ritz, but
a place to rest every night while you get out and enjoy Kauai !

Room Tip: Get the first floor if possible....

My family has been a part of the Mokihana for almost 30 years. This is NOT a hotel so don't expect a 5 star experience. But for a very modest charge here is what you get....A view like no other on Kauai. Right on the water, awesome pool, great people, awesome river next to the Mokihana, centralized location to the entire island, BBQ's and so much more. If you want to be pampered and spend per night what it costs to spend a week at the Moki go for it. I'll be there May 12th and can't wait!

Room Tip: Book early and check back for cancellations

I've done a lot of travelling and I have to say by far this is the worst hotel ever. The place is in need of serious updating and possibly a complete remodel. It had a rained for a day and our room had a roof leak. When I brought it to the attention to the manager, they did very little to accommadate us. He offered us another room, but we opted to get another hotel.

My wife and I discovered Kauai and Mokihana in 1982. We fell in love with the island and the aloha spirit of the people of Kauai. Mokihana is truly a gem if you are looking for a no frills, home away from home. Mokihana is an old Hawaii, plantation style complex in a 'grandfathered' property right on the water with no setback from the beach. The setting is unequaled anywhere on Kauai. The beiautiful courtyard facing the beach has a small putting green, shufleboards and barbecues surrojndign a 25 metre pool. The grounds are beautifully maintained. On one corner of the complex is the Bull Shed restaurant offering some of the finest 'surf and turf' cuisine on the island and it is well patronized by locals and tourists alike. We have been going to Mokihana every October for a month since 1982 and are counting the days now before going to visit our many friends there again this year. Also, we find the East shore in Kappa is the best place to be if you are going to Kauai because you are equal driving distance to either end of the perimeter road around the island.

This place is not fancy and if you are looking for a resort experience, go somewhere else. But if you want to have money left over to eat and have fun, and you want an incredible location and very nice people, give the Mokihana a chance. It grew on us during the week we were there and we were sad to leave.

We had two rooms, #125 was literally 20 feet from the water and had some issues: the carpet was a little damp and because it was windy, there were waves crashing all the time and that was a little loud! Also, it smelled musty, but the kitchen and bedding were very clean and comfortable.

The other room, #106, was farther from the water but dry, clean and quiet. All rooms have great ocean views.

The central location is great if you are visiting Kauai for the first time - it's halfway between Poipu (southern, sunny, more resorty part of island) and the North Shore (a great mix of locals and resorts).

  • Liked — Location - right on the water
  • Disliked — Damp, needs updating
