Very friendly service. Big and clean room right on the beach. Quiet and beautiful. Super convenience location inside the shopping area and close to downtown Kapaa and local stores and restaurants.

This hotel was great. Stayed for a week in an Oceanfront room. Rooms are clean and spacious. Hotel grounds are immaculate. Staff were friendly. My only issues are with the overall management of the hotel.

If you are chekcing in make sure you get there before 11pm. We had a late flight and were told that if we had shown up 5 minutes later the front desk would have been closed for checking in. I had called 3 weeks prior to our trip and was told it was a 24 hour front desk. Apparently this changed 2 weeks before our trip. I'm not sure what we would have done as we did not have a car rental our first night....maybe slept on the beach??

Secondly- If you are going to charge your guests $1000 a week to stay don't give out free coffee for 1 night and then charge a dollar if your guests ask for coffee on the second day. Add another $7 on to the price of your weekly rate instead of coming across as cheap.

The Islander is a good hotel bordering on great (or a great 3 star or adequate 4 star hotel). It is centrally located, just south of Kapaa. My wife and I celebrated our 8th anniversary there and had an awesome time. We did get a great deal and upgraded to an ocean view room, which overlooked the pool and then on to the ocean. The landscaping is amazing. Yes the hotel is dated and the beach isn’t, at least in winter, ideal for swimming, but overall this place is great. The staff was friendly and very helpful. The pool was nice and the bar there was a favorite at happy hour. By the end of our week we missed not having a kitchen, but if you can do without and need a place to go, the Islander is great, especially if you get a deal.

Hawaiian-style, low-rise (3-story) buildings at oceanfront with the soothing sound of waves, but other beaches are calmer for swimming. The hotel is conveniently located in Kapaa town, near the airport, shopping, restaurants, and historical sites. It also faces east, providing for glorious sunrises looking out to the beach. Free Internet and parking add to the value in providing basic needs for travelers to enjoy Kauai all day to return to rest at night.

If you are looking for a laid back holiday in a fabulous location, this could be for you. The Aston Islander hotel is located on the east of the island within easy reach of the airport and a great location from which to visit the whole island. Right from our arrival, the service from all staff we met was excellent. We had booked an ocean view room, stunning view right on the beach. The whole complex has an attractive colonial style, set in very well maintained beautiful gardens. Rooms were clean, comfortable and spacious, air conditioned with a fridge, coffee maker and microwave. Doing laundry is easy, self service washers and dryers on site.
Having no restauraunts on site gave us the opportunity to find some great places to eat. Next to the hotel is the coconut market place, where our favourite place to eat breakfast is Eggberts. The BBQs next to the pool are available for every one to use and were a real hub for meeting some great people. The best place we found to buy groceries was about a 15 min walk away to the local foodland and safeway. You can save dollars by getting their customer loyalty card, doesn't matter if you are on holiday.
The trees lounge/bar is adjacent to the coconut market place. It does great food, cocktails and live music.
Getting around- the island isn't very big but has alot to offer. We would recommend hiring a car, but do it before you get to Kauai, it's a lot cheaper. We used the Kauai bus too, very cheap and drivers very helpful. Bus stop next to the hotel.
What we liked best was being able to totally chill out and relax in a beautiful part of the world. Highlights included snorkling, exploring the island with some wonderful people , not having to fight for a sunlounger by the pool and having found a great hotel that has a personality all of its own.
We only had one suggestion to make and that was to put lights next to the bbqs by the pool and for us brits who like Tea, a kettle in the room would be a bonus.
We'll be back!

We stayed at The Islander 25 years ago on our honeymoon! We feared we might be disappointed when we returned so many years later, especially after discovering it had turned into a "condo". NOT! It is still beautiful, peaceful and affordable. Great service, no complaints. Enough kitchen for the basics, a private balcony, and a separate bedroom for my husband & myself. This is not a place for people wanting "foo-foo" luxury accommodations. This is for folks who want a pleasant, peaceful, relaxing vacation. No noisy neighbors, no drunk tourists, no Honolulu! Just the sound of waves hitting the shore, fresh air and starry skies overhead! Mmmmm good.

If you plan on spending your days shopping, wandering, or on excursions then this hotel will work. If you're looking to hang by the beach or the pool, take in sun, be pamped and relax, then this is not the place. Its a good fit if you live in Hawaii or are visiting Hawaii for work . But If you're looking for a honeymoon spot or a sun seeking / water frolicking get-away from the cold type of vacation, I would stick to something on Poipu beach. The grounds were immaculate and the service was very good. It would be hard to find ugly grounds on Kauai with all the beautiful plant life. The cleaning services could be a little intrusive as they are paid to come and clean rooms daily.
The rooms are dated but well set up. Our room had two twin beds (even though they knew we were on a honeymoon!) cable TV, a balcony, mini fridge, coffee pot, toaster microwave, etc. The water pressure in the bathroom was next to the worst I've ever experienced. We were on the third floor and there is no elevator, so if you don't like stairs or are mobility challenged, get the first floor or look elsewhere. Our room did have an ocean view. I don't know if it's because it's on the windward side of the island or what, but the strong fishy smell of the ocean is VERY strong here, unlike Poipu and the west side. Leaving the patio door open was not a pleasant option.
The beach is good for sunrises and walks but that's about it. Swimming is not recommended here due to unpredictable currents. There were two broke-down loungers on the beach and that's it. The beach is also very small, unless you walk down to a nearby spot which was usually full of locals.
Speaking of locals, the poolside bar seems to be hangout for them, although they may be living at the hotel full time, or visiting from the adjacent hotels. We definitely felt out of place here as vacationers. All the patrons knew the bartenders and spoke very loudly of past experiences, parties, and other content not appropriate for younger ears. Many times during the afternoons we could overhear the loud and obscenity filled stories told by the one younger female bartender to local barflies. There were children present poolside and the parents looked quite annoyed. There is a small pool and hot tub, nothing extravagant but sufficient for getting wet - if you don't mind the constant party at the bar. There are also a few BBQs for guest use - which are usually very busy with the above mentioned folks.
The location is very good for shopping, excursions, and other amenities as it is right near Kapaa. The Coconut marketplace is right across the road and has many stores and food huts. It is nowhere near as clean or as nice as the marketplaces found on Poipu though.
Parking is very limited and usually in full sun. Some people had to park in the nearby coconut marketplace as there were no more spots, it's also a fair hike to the buildings from the lot, not to mention the stairs. There is pay-internet computers in the lobby but no free wi-fi.
I would recommend this place for single travelers, passers through, people on business, people looking to meet locals, and/or thrifty travelers. I would not recommend the Aston for honeymooners, families, or persons with limited mobility.
