“Very nice place!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2013

This was our first stay on our island-hopping trip through the islands. It was lovely! The room itself was simple, but clean and nice. Being right on the beach, it had tile floors rather than carpet, which makes sense. The property was very nice - landscaping and pool area well-kept. It also has a laundry facility that we could use. All employees were helpful and friendly. We only had 2 issues - first, the $15 a day resort fee that included DVD rentals, newspapers and a few other things that we did not use. Internet is also included, and we did use that. Second, there is not nearly enough parking and thus we had to park in the back of the nearby mall. Parking is free, anyway! No restaurant in the actual resort, but very close is a great place called "Trees." Great food and entertainment.

Room Tip: We had room 164 right by the ocean. Very nice!

We stayed here last year and enjoyed it very much and as they say if it "ain't broke don't fix it" Rooms are rather small but large enough. We had an oceanfront room as we had last year, and if you happen to be a smoker it's only about twenty feet to the beach to do so. There are a few restaurants within walking distance as well as some nice shopping spots if that's your thing. If your looking to relax this place is for you. We will be back

Stayed here 4 nights in February. Good location and room had lovely view of pool and beach. Comfortable room, nice lanai. Reception staff were very poor, no friendly greeting like we had experienced at other Hawaii hotels. Really felt like we were a nuisance to them whenever we asked them questions. Room wasn't serviced one day, no real apology. Room not ready when we arrived (ok we were 30 mins early) but had to wait over an hour and no one offered to store our luggage. Very disappointing.

We stayed for 6 nights this February in an ocean front room. With the (about $16 a day) resort fee you get in room coffee, 2 movies rentals a day and pool towels. It's really a ridiculous fee but just about all resorts in Kauai charge this so they get away with it. The room was small but adequate and modern for the most part. The room looked and smelled clean but did have sand on the floor for half our stay. The bed was old and creaky but comfortable. The TV was very old but I did notice most other rooms have flat screens. There is a play station which you use to play your movie rentals from the laundry room where there is a machine. I knew beforehand the beach out front was not a swimming one but was disappointed to discover that it's not for walking on either. The sand is very coarse (broken up coral) making it painful to walk barefoot and impossible to maneuver in sandals.

I researched Kauai for 3 months and I can say for certain this is the best value hotel to stay if you are on a budget. For an ocean front room at this price, I don't think the Aston can be beat. The central location of the hotel makes it quick and easy to visit all sides of the island with minimal driving. It's location behind Coconut Market place makes it easy to walk for sundries and shop in the MANY stores. While the Aston does not have a restaurant the resort next store does and the food is the best we ate the whole week. It was imposible to get a reservation there but found that if we went early we found a comfortable table in the open air lounge/bar. Speaking of bar, don't waste your money at the pool bar at the Aston. Go next door, the drinks are cheaper, better tasting and you won't have to deal with the bartender’s attitude.

We did have some problems during our stay but when I brought them up at checkout, they did the right thing.

Rooms were spacious, clean and ours had a lovely view after requesting a higher sea view room.
Great cocktails by the pool, and lovely jacuzzi which was great after long walks around the island.
Useful tourist office onsite and great DVD hire service.
Really loved our stay, only problem would be car spaces could run out on a night time but you can park nearby.
The tree lounge close by does great cocktails and food along with good live music.

We had never been to Kauai in February and had mistakenly thought is was an off season. The most sunny area in the winter with the most swimmable beaches tend to be the southern beaches like those around Poipu. However, we waited too long in planning to get any kind of a good deal in the Poipu area, so we thought we would try The Aston Islander near Kapaa and the Coconut Marketplace. It is located about halfway between the southern Poipu area and the northern Princeville area.
The Islander is clean and comfortable, with a good ocean view. The room is pretty with a comfy bed and lanai with table and chairs. The ocean view 3rd floor room had a beautiful view of the pool area and beach. You can walk quite a way north along the beach, although it was not a good swimming beach at the time we were there. With the temperatures in the low to mid 70s we enjoyed the hottub, meeting other friendly guests. The pool is not remarkable, but they has a bar by the pool with a great bartender and some nice chairs to tan and lounge in.
The Coconut Marketplace is within walking distance and has several nice places to eat (like TC's Island Grill) and the hotel next door has an upscale restaurant with amazing chefs (Hukilau Lanai).
Our trip was through AAA and Pleasant Holidays and the conceirge was on site for most of each day. Very helpful for planning things like luaus, etc. in all, we would consider staying there again unless we were going for more than 6-7 days and wanted to rent a house or biggest condo.

Room Tip: If you upgrade to oceanview, ask for the third floor so you actually get a good view.

After staying at another hotel for the week before, we were very surprised and pleased. After a quick check in, we were into our clean and comfortable ocean vierw fronted room. The balcony overlooked the breaking water on the beach 70 yds away!! The main bedroom had a small but very convenient kitchen unit, including microwave. Plenty of storage and the usual crockery and glasses with a good sized fridge. The beach is simply stunning, and with miles of sandy beach walks, which will lead you past otther resorts, including the Marriott further up the beach. Beacuse the beach faces East, the sunrises are not to be missed!! Usually around 6.50am to 7.15am, find a spot on the beach and wait, its worth it!! There are plenty of signs staing the risks of swimming due to the currents and rip tides which can be dangerous, its worth heeding, as there are sme fantastic snorkling beaches in the North of the Island (Tunnels Beach during the summer and Anini Beach anytime!!)

Dining - As described and understood, the resort doesnt have a retaurant, which is what we wanted and expected. It would seem that some of the other TA reviewers hadn't understood this. We visited three great local restaruants, all listed and reviewd on TA, (Monico's - Good Mexican, Caffe Coc - Bistro style, and Meme - Asian) all within 5 to 10 mins walking distance. On one night we ordered in a pizza, as there are two Pizza Huts locally, with a quick and efficient delivery (the reception supplied telephone number or you can order on line). The Kauau Beach Resort saw us on two nights as this restaurant within 5 mins walk of the Aston Islander on the Beach Resort proved to be very good. Excellent food and service, BUT you'll need to ring and book in advance because its busy and sells out quickly.

Getting around - I would strongly recommend hiring a car, in advance would be best, although on site hire is possible, but avaialbility is limited if during or near a public or federal holiday. check out www.rentalcars.com as they guys have access to all the islands resource for hire firms. Be aware of the agent / sales person 'upselling", unless you feel it nececssary, I would avoid extra "Tyre Insurance" - "Loss of ignition key insurance" - But rates should include Collison Damage Waiver. Also, be wary of the full tank purchase in advance when you return the vehicle. Although the gallon price is fixed, you end up paying for a full tank and unless you are happy to run around with next to nothing on the fuel gauge (fuel stations are few and far between outside of the main towns), the price per gallon for fuel is more expenice in the North of the Island.

We thorughly enjoyed our stay, although one thing to bear in mind as we checked out (mnidday), if you have a late flight, the resort didn't have a spare room as they were fully booked for the week ahead, as we wanted to have a quick late showerbefore going off to the airport, but they did suggest that a resort called the Lydgate down the road towards the airport does have rest rooms with showers for men and women, which you can use for a quick shower and change for the return trip.

Anyway, enjoy!! Its a lovely resort and a fantastic Island!! Happy holiday. "Mahalo.."
