We just returned from a 10 day stay in Kauai at the Fern Grotto Inn and I am already "home sick". Having a little spot to call our own, with a BBQ, small kitchenette, and a yard made us feel like we were locals. Also, access to beach gear like an umbrella, snorkel gear, towels, coolers, etc. was critical in saving money and feeling comfortable. We loved it. The room was clean and spacious. The bed was comfortable. The location was perfect- halfway from either the North Side or South Side of the island. Paul was very accommodating and easy to reach if needed, but he also gave us our privacy. Highly recommend it!

At the last minute, our original destination to Turks and Caicos went sour. It was a no-brainer. We would return to Kauai for the 5th time. But it was last minute and finding suitable accommodations was not going to be quite so simple. Thanks to David and Linda (Wailua Hideaway) who referred us to Paul Juma and the Fern Grotto Inn, we found exactly what we were looking for! We have traveled to Europe and to The islands countless times. We do NOT like hotels and resorts. We prefer the quiet, humble, peace and tranquility of a private home. The Fern Gotto Inn was spot on! The only availability was the Ohana House- 3 bedrooms, 2 baths. We thought it might be too large for just the two of us but it provided precisely what we look for when traveling. The full kitchen is HUGE, the living area is spacious and comfortable. The house was pristine and situated on beautifully maintained property. The Ohana House is private and serene. The Wailua River is literally in your back yard! Paul was a stellar host, providing all and more of what travelers would both need and desire, including a cell phone- FREE OF CHARGE! Paul makes certain that anything you could possible need, is there at your disposal. He even has a luggage scale! The kitchen is well appointed with everything one would need. If you are the condo/hotel/resort type, then you are missing what Kauai is really all about! LOVED the place! NO complaints- just thanks and kudos to Paul and his piece of Paradise!

Room Tip: The Ohana House for sure!!!! It sleeps up to 6 people but it was ideal even for just the two of us!

Wow! We just stayed in Kauai this May for 10 days. I had originally booked the Kauai Sands Hotel and to my missing the review of it until after I booked it, all I can say is I am glad I backed out of that deal and read the reviews about the Fern Grotto Inn. We stayed in the Canal Unit A. It is just a great place to stay. This unit has a very well stocked kitchette. We cooked, bbq'd and ate most of our meals here. The unit is so clean, super well maintained. We loved the bbq, the laundry unit available to us. We used the available chairs, beach mats, boogie board and ice chests. These beautiful cottages are right on the river minutes from everything. We walked to sushi our first night there. Kintaro and BE PREPARED for the wait, and is it ever worth it!!! We rented kayaks that you can literally walk to and kayaked the entire river, did the falls and wow, this could top my list for one of the most beautiful things I have ever done. How pretty kayaking with flowers falling in the water! This place is so reasonably priced for what you get. Paul gave us day use for a small fee for the unit next door as we were flying home red eye and wanted to be able to maximize our last day there. Paul is probably the nicest, most helpful, friendly guy you could ever hope to meet. He is there to answer any questions. He printed out our boarding passes too. Paul has a friend who is a bonsai master. It was really cool to see them working on Paul's bonsai's! He takes such good care of his grounds. Love it here and would highly recommend it. Paul really helped us research which place would be best for us. There was just the two of us. He has so many units available and is ready to accomodate with amazing prices for what you get. Love it here! Thank you Paul !!! Bonnie & Tom

Room Tip: Be sure to ask about units that have a/c if that is important to you. Some do, some don't.

The place is nice, clean and well managed. The manager was friendly and helpful in providing all information to optimize the stay.
Overall very good value for money for those willing to enjoy the beauty of Kauai in an independent way.

While I never got to meet my hosts (there is no office), they made my stay very comfortable. It's like a home away from home. I stayed in the Garden Inn, and had a kitchenette with mini fridge, microwave, toaster and coffee maker. They had snorkel gear, noodles, boogie boards, straw mats and other beach gear to borrow each day. The grounds are kept beautifully, and the cottages are tucked away off Kuamoo road just off the Kuhio Hwy, making them central to everything but still kind of a well-kept secret.

We stayed for 5 nights as part of our honeymoon. We were happy with canal cottage A. It is clean and well equipped, safe and has a calming atmosphere, feeling more relaxed the longer you stay! We liked the outside space, garden tables and chairs, the wifi and free laundry facilities. Paul is very thoughtful and attentive and his family is adorable. Kapaa is not a great place in itself however the location is good to get the most out of the whole island. We highly recommend the helicopter tour (we were happy with Safari helicopters), I thought it was worth every penny. Fern grotto is good value and I would be happy to recommend it and would love the opportunity stay again!

You can tell that Paul has put a lot of love and tender care into this place. I felt like I was living in paradise. You could hear the ocean at night. The atmosphere was very relaxed. I loved that a washer and dryer was available to use. Also there were other extras like beach mats, coolers, umbrellas, snorkeling gear that was available for no extra cost. I would definitely stay here again.
