“Better Than Home”
Reviewed July 15, 2007

Date: June 2007
We spent one TERRIFIC week here. Since we travel with our teenage daughter, the 2 bedroom unit was perfect. (In fact there was room in there for 4 teenagers!) And a balcony all her own, too.
The pool was even better than all the photos - just the right temperature and not crowded at all. Always clean and the grounds were swept daily.
As you have read before, the whole unit is pretty spectacular, but the most convenient part was having the washer/dryer right in the room.
We found the location, with the mall just across the street, to be one of the best features. If Safeway hadn't been within walking distance we would have had to drive and fight the very congested Kapaa traffic. The traffic signal may have seemed like 5-10 minutes, but it really wasn't. We did make use of the kitchen so made a few trips to Safeway!
Kapaa is a good central location for traveling to the other beaches and interests on the island. (But do allow a few extra minutes for traffic when you head back to the airport.)
The only 'issue' we had was that there was a wedding on Saturday night and the band played late into the night. But with the doors closed we were able to keep most of the sound out.
Our favorite activity was the boat trip we took on Holoholo Charters. The 7 hour trip was awsome, saw LOTS of dolphins, flying fish and monk seals, and of course wonderful views of the Na Pali coast. Something to remember ----
ONE WEEK ON THIS ISLAND IS NOT ENOUGH!

The resort recently opened and was beautifully furnished. The pool was as lovely as pictured, as well as the rest of the resort. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The beach was not for swimming, but provided great scenery. We would visit again.

We stayed at the Waipouli Resort & Spa in Kapaa on 6/26 - 6/30, which was the first part of our honeymoon before going to Maui. We wanted to make sure we posted our comments in Trip Advisor because we depended on trip advisor's reviews so much when we were deciding on where to go for our honeymoon and where to stay. We had read good reviews about this resort and will be adding to the good reviews with our comments here.

The resort is new and from what we understood was opened just last December. The staff was friendly and the concierge was very helpful. Housekeeping did a good job. This resort has only condos, so it was great to be able to fix our own meals if we wanted and make yummy pina colada's. The condos are very clean with great appliances, granite countertops, washer/dryer, flat screen TV's, IPOD Home docking station and free internet. Safeway, Longs & Starbuck's are right across the street and within walking distance, which was very convenient. Since this resort has only condos, there were lots of families with kids, mostly young kids. The pool was fine, but really more designed for kids. Thank goodness a few of the hot tubs were for adults only where we could find a quieter place to soak up the sun. The grounds were well manicured and the entire facility was clean. There is an easily assessable beach, which was never crowded with lounge chairs and you can take the towels there that are given to guest from the pool area. They do have the wrist band rule for guest while in the pool area, which I didn't like, but it's to keep non-guest out, which is a good thing.

We were a little disappointed that the only bar at the resort didn't serve any food to the guest. While we were at the bar one night, one of the resort’s developers was there with friends and family and they were served food from the little café, but food still wouldn't be served to the guests that were at the bar at the same time. It didn’t seem very fair. If you’re looking for a resort with room service, amenities and special services, this place wouldn’t probably be for you. There is no restaurant at this resort, but we heard they are planning on adding one. There are lots of other restaurants nearby, but nobody could really recommend any “great or good” restaurants.

We were happy that we chose to go to Kauai first before Maui because Kauai is VERY laid back and non-commercial. It was good to relax there first; however, we were happy to leave for Maui where there's more to see and do. There are no “fine dining” restaurants in Kauai that we found and if you're in hurry or expecting great service, patience is a virtue.

We were in room C406. We were to have a "Special Partial Ocean View" room, which is exactly what we had. The view wasn't perfect by any means because of the ugly and old apartment complexes next door, but we were okay with it. If we had not been on the 4th floor, we wouldn't have seen the ocean because the dilapidated apartment/condo building would have been our view.

If you stay at this resort, make sure to allow plenty of time to get to the airport. The two lane bumper to bumper road to get from this place to the airport is ridiculous with lots of red lights and merging cars. We almost missed our flight to Maui. We don’t know if it’s always like this. We left for the airport at 10AM on a Saturday.

All and all, we enjoyed the Waipouli Resort and would definitely recommend staying there with the rooms being their biggest asset. We probably won’t return to Kauai because it’s too laid back for us, but we enjoyed snorkeling on the South side of the island and the helicopter ride is the only way to really see this lush and beautiful island. Happy traveling!

My husband, myself, and our 13 year old daughter thought this
place was wonderful. We had a 2 bedroom, 3 bath oceanview room. The staff was very friendly from check in to the bellman giving us an overview of the property along with a free beach bag (which came in very handy), some hats, and sunscreen. The daily maid service was also very good with them giving us plenty of towels. This place is top notch from the inside to the lush outside grounds and the awesome pool area. The drinks at the bar were good. It couldn't have been a better set up for us, with our daughter having her own space etc. As for the location, it was perfect for exploring the island as we did just about everyday. We would head North or South and then
return back in the afternoon for some relaxing pool and jacuzzi
time. The pool area never seemed that crowded and we were there the week of July 4th. No locals hanging around as previous reviews have mentioned. We were given the arm wristbands but we never wore them. I just threw them in my bag in case they were to ask but they never did. There was plenty of security around the place. Staff members always looking over the pool area and a security guy riding a bike around the parking lot. We very much liked having the convience of the Safeway, a drugstore, and Starbucks across the street. We usually
stopped in one of those places each day to grab something. We cooked a lot of breakfast in the kitchen and would eat out mostly at night, again a convienient location for lots of restaurant choices. We never
had any major traffic issues other than one night when trying to get to Poipu for our dinner reservation at the Beach House restaurant. There was a brush fire heading that way and it took us two hours to get there because the road was blocked. We never had any problems whatsoever getting out on the main road at the intersection light that others have mentioned. Kauai is beautiful and the WBR made it all perfect.

  • Disliked — There was nothing to dislike.

One wicked resort and spa that is just ideal for families - especially for the keiki's (kids). My 6 year old just could not get enough of the place even after we stayed here for 6 nights and 7 days. The staff, the pool, the beach shack bar and even the lifeguards get an extra speacial thumbs up!! Even though a few extra bucks, just to enjoy the beautiful gentle Pacific breeze I will be going with an ocean side or pool/ocean side room the next time I am here - it is sooooooooo relaxing. Trust me when i say that we definitely will be coming here the next time. Perfectly situated between North and South shore, worked out just perfect for the family who was also interested in sight seeing and trying out other beaches. The kitchen and the BBQ grills down below by the pool was just awesome. Overall we had a fantabulous experience. Mahalo Outrigger.

Wow! That is all I can say. Wow!! My husband and I (with another couple) stayed in unit #302 back in april (our 1st time to hawaii) and we were very impressed. The unit was top of the line with stainless steal appliances, flat screen tv's, and oh the bedding...better than our bed at home. Like floating on clouds. The lanis (balconies) had breath taking views. The pool was awesome with 3 hot tubs so no over crowding. Our only complaint was that it closed at 10pm so no late night hot tubing. The beach was nice for sunrises but need water shoes here due to rocks if swimming. The staff was very nice and helpful. Booked through [--] and got a great deal. Don't have to pay more and go through owner to get a great room here because so new. Also saved money because able to book 2bed/2bath and split it. Still had plenty of privacy. Only hope the price doesn't go up in the future so we can go back.

On a side note...book some excursions like a snuba dive or zipline adventure (not scary at all) with waterfall swim, and try to soak it all in. It will overwhelm your senses. There is a beautiful but rough hike at the northern most dead end of the main road and a georgous secluded beach with nice waves at the southern most dead end of the main road (after 5miles of rough terrain). But also get some good R&R.

Our family stayed at the resort for a couple of days in June -- between bed & breakfasts.

Our room, A102, was excellent. We literally opened our doors to a patio, then a beautiful lawn, and then the Pacific. It was private, quiet and handy to the heated saltwater pool around the corner. The pool is stunning: meandering with waterfalls, slides, mini-caves, hot tubs, etc. It's on the beach.

The condo is very well appointed. We ate dinner in the two nights we were there by making quick trips to Safeway for fish, wine and fruit. The patio of the unit was such a beautiful view that we couldn't resist.

The staff was friendly and helpful, the room was clean, and check-in was quick and easy.

The location is central, and convenient. Watch out for rush hour traffic. While we were there, the weather was unusual and the beach was definitely unswimmable. Based on the signage, it does not seem like a safe swimming beach -- undertow, strong currents, etc.

The only difficulty we had was the light from the side of the beach bar that literally illuminated our bed if we tried to enjoy sleeping on the ocean by opening the drapes and using the screens to let in fresh air while we slept. After one restless night, I asked the barman to turn off the outdoor side lights after he closed the bar. He did, but they came back on about 45 minutes later. (Perhaps security?) We had to close the drapes and turn on the air conditioner to get some sleep. I suggested to the front desk that they consider somehow changing the lights.

One important fact is that this resort is small enough and accessible enough that you can park your own car, and not wait for the valet to fetch it every time you want to go somewhere.

This was an extraordinarily nice, almost new facility. I would book it again. The location of our room was excellent, and it added to the pleasure of staying there. It would be good to book well ahead and be sure you reserved a room oceanside rather than Safeway side.
