Firstly, if you're going to book Waipouli, then don't book directly through the hotel itself. They only manage a few of the rooms, and apparently (in reviewing other posts) they're not doing a great job. Consider a vacation rental broker/manager such as Kauai Exclusive Vacations (KEV). We used them, they were Awesome.
First - about us: mom, dad, 8 month old, and grandparents. (note: this was not a honeymoon, and I think there are better places in Kauai if you're on a honeymoon. More on this later).
The Room: Ours was D404. It was awesome. Great view of the water and pool (inward facing). Great balcony. Well appointed. Air conditioner worked great. Dishwasher broke, they (KEV) had it replaced in 48 hours and provided gift certificates to the restaurant for our troubles. 2 bedrooms. 3 bathrooms. All very modern.
The Restaurant: Awesome. No other words to describe it. Great food. However, definitely pricey. It's situated right near the beach, and they open all the doors and windows. Probably the best situated restaurant in Kapaa.
The Pool: Quite sufficient. Lots of space. Lots of seating. And there is a unique 'river' that is about 30 meters long and winds its way through the courtyard. All in all, very adequate for adults (unless you're hell bent on swimming laps) and great for kids. Awesome slides.
The Hot Tubs: Three hot tubs. Two are designated for adults. One for kids and adults. All were great. No problem with these in the day time. I did notice on a couple of nights some local kids managed to hop some fences and use the tubs. Good for them!! :-)
Hotel Location: Very conveniently located across from a plaza with three grocery stores (one exclusively dedicated to health foods and totally awesome).
The Town: Kapaa is a quaint town - feels a little less touristy and a little more 'local'. In the town center, lots of cool shops and a few good restaurants and drinking holes.
The Location on the Island: Basically smack center on the Eastern coast. 30 minutes to Hanalei Bay to the North. 30 minutes to Poipu to the South. Very convenient from that point of view.
The Beach: The hotel is right on the beach. It's beautiful part of the coastline and the beach itself is ok. BUT - it's not a super comfortable beach to go swimming in. Adults can hop in, wade around a few feet off shore, but you wouldn't want to go too far out on account of the tides they occasionally warn about. Also, the beach water is rocky. You would not want unsupervised children swimming here. The beach itself is sand, but if you walk into the water, lots of rocks. Water shoes very helpful here. Lastly, it's not really one of those huge, wide, white sand post card perfect beaches. But I personally found it quite fine as we didn't spend much time there. One great thing is that there is a pathway along the beach that you can walk and/or run for a couple miles south.
Services: There are none. So, beware. If you're looking for one of those full service all-inclusive deals with social facilitators, activity organizers, nightly shows, and such, this isn't it. We were not looking for this. So, it met our expectations famously.
