We had a wonderful tour with Kayak Adventures kayaking down the beautiful Wailua River. Our trip led us 2 miles down the waterway to a secluded area where we left our boats and began our hike through the lush green Kauai rainforest. We ended at the beautiful Secret Falls, stopping for lunch and a refreshing dip in the pool underneath. Our guide Andy was laid back, patient, and friendly as well as an encyclopedia of knowledge about the island's plants, animals, and history. Our group consisted of individuals with all levels of kayaking/hiking experience and the tour was appropriate for everyone. A great introduction to the inland waters and forest of beautiful Kauai!

“What an Adventure!”

We kayaked 2 miles up the river, hiked 2 miles up to the falls, and then did everything in reverse. Kevin was a charming and engaging guide, and I would definitely recommend this trip to everyone!

“Great trip”
Reviewed August 29, 2013

We decided kind of last minute to go on a kayak trip to Secret Falls (I guess they're not so secret anymore since a few dozen companies organize kayak trips to the falls...) and fortunately they still had some spots available. Book one or two days in advance, and they'll schedule you in.

For the money, you'll get a guide, some water, snacks and a sandwich. The sandwiches are good by the way!

They use double kayaks, which are ocean kayaks. The chance of tipping these over, is rather small. But it can always happen, of course. Wear a life vest if you're not a comfortable swimmer.

After a lesson in paddling techniques, you depart on a 2 mile kayak trip on Wailua river. Going upstream is quite easy, as you are most likely to have the wind in the back. About 45 minutes in, the kayaks are secured on land and you will hike to the falls. The hike is an easy one in dry periods, but could get muddy after rainfall. Wear shoes with good grip and that can get wet, as you will have to cross a knee deep river twice.

The falls are quite nice, although when we got there, little water was flowing. You are advised not to swim in the pool, but let's be honest: you just have to do that. Watch out for things dropping of the falls and just let the waterfall rain down on you.

The way back can be a bit harder, as you'll be paddling into the wind.

The guides know their way around the forest and can tell you very interesting facts about all the fauna and flora. We had Zach as a guide, and he did an excellent job. He never rushed us, but still got a nice pace going, returning us back to Wailua within a very reasonable time and without being exhausted.

If you have half a day of spare time on Kaua'i, this would be a great way to spend it.

“A great adventure and educational experience!”
Reviewed August 18, 2013

We, Kevin, Debbie & Taylor, went up the Wailua river on July 30th 2013 with Zach as our guide.

Zach was warm and friendly, genuinely a good guy. I watched how he dealt with all the personalities on our excursion. There were all types of experience in our group and he interacted with each as if they were the only one there. Once again very genuine. Must have been the west Texas upbringing. Oh, and my girls, they were convinced he was actually Matthew McConaughey researching a role. Seriously, Zach was focused on our safety and determined to provide us with some interesting historical information along with some botanical facts that were fun.

“River Kayak Tour”
Reviewed August 16, 2013

This adventure rates at the top of our list during our trip to Kauai. We appreciate all the instruction before going on the river adventure. Daniel our guide was very helpful in explaining and instructing us in the finer points of paddling and keeping our Kayak on course.
I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants a real adventure. It was wonderful.
