We had a blast on this hike. We are fit and used to climbs, but we met an older fellow who had fallen and was cut. The trail is tough in some areas and not marked very well. There are a few mileage markers, but many little side trails and forks in the road made it confusing. A couple of locals helped us out and we were very grateful.

Great as a first hike while on Kaua'i. the East trail starts 1.1 miles up Haleilio Rd. at the small parking area. trail is moderately steep, with mud and slick after rain. Views are great of Kapa'a and Coconut Coast. East facing, so morning hikes may be best and also, most sun exposure.

As Dawn said, "great quick hike." Decent gain, moderately steep, so a good walk to start the day. Which I would advise doing in the summer, as the humidity can get a bit annoying as the day progresses. The trail itself is just decent. But the exercise combined with the view from the top make this a "must do" if you're staying in Kapaa.

It's not too difficult to follow the trail, but there are a couple points where you can get off path if you're not alert. We, well I (can't blame the wife on this one), wasn't paying attention and had us going straight up the hill through thick brush. Wasn't a horrible experience, but not good for erosion or bug avoidance.

All in all, well worth it!

Very nice views of the east side of the island. Not terribly strenuous, took us a couple of hours including the "super scary don't go beyond this point" section, which of course we did. Small parking lot at the trailhead but enough parking when we were there.

Fun, peaceful and great views. Moderate uphill trail. Great day hike. East side trail head has parking lot. Our goal when we return next year is to do all the different trails.
