“Scenic Trail with Great Views”

Sleeping Giant Trail
Ranked #5 of 56 things to do in Kapaa

We hiked the east side of Sleeping Giant which is approx 2 miles to the top. The path is full of switchbacks & an easy to medium effort hike. Well worth the time & the extra effort to continue on past the picnic tables. That will require a slight rock climb at the end, but once on top you a fantastic view of the island. Hikes in the morning are probably better, prior to the heat & humidity increasing. Walking sticks are left at the big tree at the start of the trail & a good idea for the hike. Be sure & take water with you.

We did both the front and back sections of this trail. What we loved most about it was the variety of plants and scenery that is available on this trail. The trail was pretty easy-going, but was slippery in some spots due to heavy rains in the area that week.

We did the east side based on guide book recommendations. This trail is full of switchbacks with great sweeping views of back to Lihue. The picnic area is a great place for lunch or a snack, but some of the best views are actually a couple tenths of a mile before you get to the picnic tables. The climb is steady and a bit steep in a couple spots, but very doable with some good tennis shoes.

As with most trails there this one is over used. Regardless it is scenic. The West trail has a stand of Cook Pines and is shortest but with difficult parking and no signs to get there. The East is longer, has more views, and has better parking. The southern access trail joins the west trail. It has plenty of parking but requires a long circumnavigating trail that is just an old road. The summit ridge is challenging to some. The views are good.

Likes - perfect for a quick morning hike! Some of the best views on the island.

Dislikes - Not many! It seems there are a few ways to get to the top. Kind of easy to get off the trail at some parts (in particular during the tall pines section). Would be good to have a small sign here to make sure people don't get off track. Make sure you always head upwards.
