Our guide, Forest, couldn't have been more entertaining or accommodating! This is a very physical hike, you Kayak for roughly 45 minutes and then the insanely muddy hike to the falls. When they say bring an old pair of shoes, they mean it... On our hike the mud was knee deep, but if you don't have an old pair to throw away, they do have donated shoes that you can choose from when you get there. We didn't want to risk not having our size so we bought cheap ones at Wal Mart 10 minutes away.

I will always remember this adventure... Not often that you kayak down a river into the jungles of Hawaii and then embark on a knee deep muddy adventure to be rewarded with such a refreshing and beautiful waterfall swim! I could've stayed swimming in the waterfall all day!

If you are physically able, there is no reason not to do this trip with this fantastic company! Request Forest if possible, he really makes the trip even more enjoyable.

My wife and I are not big kayakers but we booked with Kayak Wailua and were not disappointed. Our tour guide, Lisa, was very patient with all the kayakers. There were some ladies who were with our group that were a bit "slower" than the rest and Lisa stayed with them and assisted them both on the hike and the kayaking. The kayaking was a wonderful experience and the water calm. The hike was slippery but it was not strenuous. However it was a ton of fun. The scenery both on the river and at the falls were breathtaking. A totally wonderful experience. Make sure to get coupons for free water from all the brochures at the airport/hotel etc.

We were a little apprehensive on taking a kayak and hike tour, however on the recommendation of Lonely Planet and friends we made on the island on the way, we were convinced that this tour would be worth a shot.

The location to check in is very unassuming, but after a few minutes we realized that this small family-esqe outfit is big on fun, safety, and taking good care of their gear. We were offered dry packs to pack our gear and lunch/snacks that were clean and new, and had sufficient straps on them to wear during our hike. The gear looked like it had been purchased the previous week, and was carefully handled.

Our highlight of the whole trip was our guide Forest who was full of energy and life, jokes, and facts about the island and it's history. I don't think we've soaked in as much information from a great 'teacher' in a long time. He is a true islander that respects the land and culture and has a fun time sharing it with other people. The 'paddle' up and down the river was an easy 45 minute-ish journey and the tour is appropriate for all fitness levels, as the four-hour tour time is very lenient - we spent almost 6 hours on our tour, but it was nice to not be rushed along the river or hike. The 1 mile hike was shin-deep muddy on the day we hiked, however it was a very easy jaunt so long as we took it easy and listened to Forest's guiding words: "mud is your friend, step in the middle" were not to be ignored if you wanted to stay on your feet! At the end of the hike the view and the swimming opportunity at the falls is totally worth it, giving you plenty of relaxing time around the 100ft waterfall.

Kayak Wailua is the 'little guy' company amongst the tours that are offered, but they give top notch tours that are worth it! Highly recommended!

Had a great day with our 3 boys, 11,9&5. They have a 3 seat kayak which was key for us so our 5 yr old could ride. Our guide was awesome. It took 40 min from the Grand Hyatt to get there for 9am departure. Very beautiful scenery, amazing hike and when you get to the falls, it's great to jump in. Bring a snack to enjoy by the falls. I did not but our guide very graciously offered my guys his sandwich!

My husband and kayaked up the river to the falls and fern grotto on our own without a tour guide. The price was reasonable and getting the kayak to the river was easy enough. Kauai is such a beautiful place and we encountered friendly people our whole trip except for the staff member at this location. He arrived almost 20 minutes late and was extremely rude to us and another couple that arrived on time. It was clear that he did not want to be there and seemed like he was trying to detour us from even hiking up to the falls and to fern grotto. I couldn't believe it!
We also didn't know that we had to have the kayak back at a certain time, which was fine because we got back about an hour before it was due. We had a wonderful time and would recommend it, just hope the guy is a little nicer to others.
