Kukuiolono is a 9 hole course willed to the state for the people of Kauai in 1920 or so. It is to remain low cost in perpetuity. This means, of course, low maintenance as well. That said, we had enough fun playing the course that we did it twice on this trip.
The cost is $9 per person, plus $8 for the power cart. The fairways are wide, though several have severe right-to-left slopes (or vice versa) which narrows them for all practical purposes as a ball may easily roll into the very thick native vegetation. Being on a hilltop, it is up and down, also. There is no water, and few traps, still it is an interesting course with a few challenging holes and some nice views. It is probably best suited for medium to high handicappers (like my wife and myself).
The wind seems to be always blowing, and the course is laid out acknowledging this fact, with both long and short par 4's. While both the fairways and greens could use more maintenance, this fact did not hinder our enjoyment of playing the course.
There are rental clubs, but we were told that they are not always available. There is also a cafe which was quite crowded with locals on our last visit. They serve a pretty good hamburger at a pretty good price.
