“Good views, okay golf, great value”
Reviewed May 18, 2008

Kukuiolono is a 9 hole course willed to the state for the people of Kauai in 1920 or so. It is to remain low cost in perpetuity. This means, of course, low maintenance as well. That said, we had enough fun playing the course that we did it twice on this trip.

The cost is $9 per person, plus $8 for the power cart. The fairways are wide, though several have severe right-to-left slopes (or vice versa) which narrows them for all practical purposes as a ball may easily roll into the very thick native vegetation. Being on a hilltop, it is up and down, also. There is no water, and few traps, still it is an interesting course with a few challenging holes and some nice views. It is probably best suited for medium to high handicappers (like my wife and myself).

The wind seems to be always blowing, and the course is laid out acknowledging this fact, with both long and short par 4's. While both the fairways and greens could use more maintenance, this fact did not hinder our enjoyment of playing the course.

There are rental clubs, but we were told that they are not always available. There is also a cafe which was quite crowded with locals on our last visit. They serve a pretty good hamburger at a pretty good price.

“Not bad at all if you like cheap golf!”
Reviewed April 27, 2007

My husband and I love to golf but did not want to bring our golf clubs all the way from WI and didn't want to spend a ton of money golfing at the expensive places in Hawaii (we aren't THAT good--wanted to spend our money elsewhere-we can golf at home). While my husband was looking up things to do in Hawaii, he came across this place. It's on the south end of Kauai and it was $8 to play per person for 9 holes. We didn't have clubs, balls, or tees, so we spent only $52 on 9 holes of golf, club rental, balls, and tees for both of us. The course isn't spectacularly maintained. Apparently the guy who owned the land said when he passed away, he wanted it to stay a non-profit golf course for the locals. So, yes it has the roosters roaming and the fairways aren't perfect, but is overlooking the ocean and has some beautiful views. Plus for $52 for 2 people you couldn't beat it. This was back in 2005 so not sure if the prices may have gone up a little, but still worth a go if you like cheap golf!
