After reading so many great reviews, I was so excited to eat here during our Kauai honeymoon. We ate there last week on 9/24 and it was so disappointing. My husband's caesar salad was fine, but the bagged version would have been an equal substitute. The much hyped lasagna was not great and the sauce splatter on the plate looked suspiciously like it had been heated in the microwave. It took about 20 minutes for us to get and pay our bill; an all time record for us! We were on "island time" and not stressing out, but not a good way to top off just a so-so experience. All in all, a very overrated experience after all the hype!

“food and service were excellent!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 27, 2008

We really did have a hard time finding a place to eat on the south shore. Many were way too expensive for a family of 6 and the more reasonable priced places had horrible reviews of the food. So, we went with a middle of the road place. We were blown away by this place. It had exceptional food and our waiter was one of a kind. He helped us make decisions on what to order and truly made this an experience. There is no view but the food made up for it. The portions are huge. My leftover food was more than what you would get at any other restaurant. The bread was delicious, too. We loved this place and this is a must dine if you are close to the west or south shore.

“Excellent Italian on Kauai”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 26, 2008

We have been to Pomodoro every time we have been to Kauai(10) and have always been happy with our dinner. The owner is great and makes you feel welcomed, like an old friend. The staff is friendly and the food is fabulous. Excellent salads that are huge so they will split them for you. Have enjoyed many different entrees and have never been disapponted. Tiramasu for dessert is awesome. It is a small place in an unpretentious strip mall, but do not let that stop you from trying it. It will be one of your best meals on the island. In Kalaheo, just a short drive from anywhere you may be staying in Poipu. You should call for reservations, but you can call the day you plan to dine there and you should be fine. Enjoy!

“A must for anyone wanting great Italian food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2007

We ended up going to Pomodoro after hiking the NaPoli coast. We were so exhausted and sore and wanted nothing other than Italian food (comfort food!). We couldn't have asked for anything better than this! We got the lasagna and the ravioli's and we shared the mozzarella appetizer. It was all so incredibly good! People - don't think twice about going here for the best Italian food you are going to find in Kauai. It's not in a fabulous location but believe me, it's worth it!

“Still the best Italian for hundreds of miles”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 29, 2007

We were REALLY wowed by this place when we went there last year -- we said we wished we had discovered it sooner so that we could have eaten there twice in the same week. We raved about the service and flavor, and the quality of the pasta. This year our results were still OK overall but very much back down to earth.

The service this time was friendly but there were a few missteps -- in describing one of the appetizers, in forgetting the other appetizer, in walking away in the middle of us placing our order, and in the yelling that was emanating from the kitchen. To make up for the forgotten appetizer he did comp a soft drink. (Thanks. Wait, soda refills are not free?!) This was a letdown as we experienced flawless, exceptional service last time.

The homemade bread was excellent. I ordered the lasagne which was good but meatier than I like it. Mrs. z had the ravioli with marinara sauce which wasn't as tasty as I remember it being last year, when I was struck by the flavor of the sauce and the freshness of the pasta. Both entree portions were ample in size.

The appetizer (which I believe was a special) was a tomato/ mozzarella/ prosciutto plate with an oil dressing and fresh basil garnish. The flavors were good overall. The amount of prosciutto was small, as it was sliced thin then rolled in layers with the mozzarella and then sliced to form a spiral disc which was laid upon the tomato slice. Not much chance to taste prosciutto there. Also a dash of vinegar would have been nice to balance out the oil. The basil was strong, possibly overly so.

In summary this is still the best Italian on Kauai and this restaurant would not be out of place in Little Italy in Boston, NY etc. If I had summarized our last visit, it would have been "the messiah has returned". This time our results were not as great but we'll definitely return when we are in the mood for Italian.
