“Love Shack, that's where it's at...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 11, 2008

Hanalei Bay is a super place to relax on your vacation... or to get real active with surfing or hiking the rugged coastline trail. The Love Shack at Simon Potts' Surfboard House is perfectly located for enjoying the laid-back town of Hanalei and being only a couple hundred yard walk to the beautiful beach!

The Surfboard House includes 2 rooms in the main house and a separate building that is the Love Shack. We were in the Love Shack and enjoyed plenty of privacy in this very roomy suite that is decorated in a very fun, quirky style. There are a myriad of little design touches like the cool tiles in the bathroom made up of dice and dominoes, the soundproofing (it is the Love Shack after all), the surround sound system to enjoy, the private patio with grill and outdoor shower...

And, I would guess that soon there will be a brand new gas grill to enjoy ;-)

Sadly, we did not get to spend much time getting to know Simon. The little bit that we did talk with him we thoroughly enjoyed and he seems like lots of fun to hang out with. I think it was mostly due to staying in the separate love shack that we didn't talk with him as much as other guests comment on.

Even though we were given the larger Love Shack at the same rate as the other rooms it was a little expensive. But, considering the great location so close to the beach and how much all the other accomodations in the Hanalei area seem to run it's worth it.

We stayed at The Hanalei Surfboard House for 6 nights in August 2008, in the Love Shack.

We thought this was an absolutely brilliant place to stay. The location was excellent and within easy walking distance of the beach.

The room was super clean, had excellent air conditioning, a very well kitted out kitchenette, a huge TV and DVD player, travel guides to borrow, a parasol and deck chairs to borrow and wireless internet. But there was so much more that you wouldn't get at your average hotel or B&B - an outside shower that was just lovely, an old juke box in the room and a wonderfully decorated bathroom with a huge bath.

Overall, I thought this was an excellent place to stay - it was a little expensive for us, but we certainly got the treat we were hoping for. I would definitely stay there again, and would recommend it without hesitation.

We loved the Surfboard House. What a great place to stay!

Our unit had areas for sleeping, sitting, and a kitchenette, with private lanais in front and in back, and manicured grounds. We enjoyed the extra space and wish we could have stayed for a month. It is nicely decorated, on the quirky side, and that made us smile.

There are many thoughtful extra touches, such as the beverage glasses kept in the freezer so that they are frosty.

We also liked the tranquility and the privacy. It is a few steps to a lifeguarded beach, probably the best beach for swimming and surfing in the area. Boogie boards, beach chairs, umbrellas, and towels were supplied. It is close to the Hanalei restaurants and shops. And the owner is friendly, gracious, and fun.

My wife and I spent seven nights at the Hanalei Surfboard House in the new "Love Shack" (we started our trip with three nights at the Four Seasons Manele Bay on Lanai). The Love Shack is similar to the two original spaces - nice stocked kitchenette, iPod dock, cable TV, and fun decorations. Simon has an amazing sense of style, and the Love Shack was appointed with lots of cool touches - custom tile in the huge bathtub, distressed wood in the kitchen, cool red couches, and thousands of vynil records.

Unlike the other two, it has air conditioning. We only used it when sleeping (as the ceiling fans and breeze were usually enough), but it was nice to have the option at night. The Love Shack also has a completely private outdoor shower, so we usually skipped in the indoor shower and showered outside every day behind the wall of surfboards!

Simon has included everything you need to hit the beach: towels, beach chairs, beach mats, a beach umbrella, boogie boards, and a cooler. Inside, the kitchen has an electric burner, full-size fridge, toaster-oven, coffee maker, and is fully stocked (there is also a Weber charcoal grill outside, which we used to grill meat for dinner most nights). And - as others have noted - Simon is a great guy. Very welcoming, charming, and fun to chat music with (since he's an ex-record executive).

More than the place (if that's possible), is the great location. Just a block or two from the beautiful 2-mile beach, and a short distance into the heart of town. Hanalei Bay is an amazing part of Kauai - no outside hotel or restaurant chains, just a quiet beach town with local shops, restuarants, bars, surf shops, and cafes. We loved breakfast and coffee at Java Kai, and had a great time having drinks and enjoying music at Hanalei Gourmet, Kalypso Island Bar, Sushi and Blues, and the rest. We usually cooked dinner in, but we had an outstanding meal at Bara Cuda Tapas & Wine (the nicest restaurant in the area). (Side note: Bubba Burgers are amazing, but the shakes are just average).

Also took a surf lesson from the Titus Kinimaka School of Surfing, which was a blast (and took Simon's recommendation of a beautiful Na Pali Coast boat tour).

So we totally recommend Simon and the Hanalei Surfboard House. We'll be jealous just knowing you're there!

  • Liked — Proximity to the beach and downtown Hanalei Bay, stylish decor, and fully stocked and ready to go.
  • Disliked — We hated leaving!

This has to be "The Best" place to stay in the Hawaiian Islands! Simon Potts is a wonderful host caring for all of his guests. What a unique place.

We enjoyed staying only a half block from Hanalei Bay and less than a mile from Hanalei Town. You can walk, everywhere.

The rooms are decorated with vintage hawaiian culture with a rustic beauty to them. They are large rooms with an excellent choice in furnishings. You get a beach hut feel with clean comfort. We were fortunate to stay in two of the three rooms that are offered.

We highly suggest this place. the gardens are tranquil and comforting. You feel relaxed and stress free here.

My wife and I were looking for a place that was out of the way where we could truely relax. We found it. The atmosphere is just what we were looking for. We were able to relax and leave the stress of the mainland behind us. We stayed there 12 days and wished we could have stayed longer.

This location is tops!. It is less than a block from the best beach on Kauai. We could walk to town for dinner each night if we wanted. Some days we didn't even need to use the car! The best parts of Kauai are really close. Once you visit the busy parts of the island you will be glad you stayed in Hanalei. Hanalei is small, but has enough resteraunts to meet most everyones needs.

The accomidations were just right. The room was very clean and with everything we needed. It doesn't have the big hotel extras, but it makes up for that in charm and quiet suroundings. The only thing to disturb you are the morning birds which are like nothing I have ever seen or heard before . There come little things which also make a big difference: snorkls & masks, boogie board, beach mats & towels, iPod dock, Bose radio, cable and WiFi.

The owner was very helpful and just a very down to earth nice guy. He will help you in any way he can and is full of fasinating stories. Be sure to check out the Slack Key Guitar Fridays and Sundays at the Community Center as well as the fantastic Farmers Market there on Saturday mornings.

We had such a great time here we are recommending it to all of our family and friends without hesitation. You can't go wrong at the Hanalei Surfboard House. This is one place I would absolutely go back to. We can't wait to return.

  • Liked — The quiet location and atmosphere.
  • Disliked — Had to leave! Seriously, a little far from rest of island attractions, but not a big negative.
