This one of a kind is hands down the best place to stay in Hanalei! Authentic, clean, historically classy and modern. The price is very friendly for what you're given. The complimentary shampoo and conditioner are made on island, as is the coffee; a real treat. Double thumbs up! If I had three thumbs, I'd give it a triple thumbs up! Saving to go back to the Hanalei Surfboard House!

We stayed in the Cowgirl Room at the Hanalei Surfboard House for two weeks and we loved it! After reading all the fantastic reviews on this site and recommendations in the various travel guides we knew it would be a good choice, but it ended up being amazing!

Simon has created a cozy space that has everything you need for a perfect vacation - great decorations, well equipped kitchen, BBQ in your own private backyard (the cedar fence smells amazing when it rains!), outdoor shower, laundry facilities, beautifully landscaped front yard, tons of movies to watch or music to listen to, beach umbrella and chairs, boogie boards, etc. It was a great home away from home, with beach access right across the street and a short walk to the heart of Hanalei. It doesn't get any better than this!

The only thing better than the Cowgirl Room? Simon himself! He greeted us the moment we arrived, helped us unload our things from our vehicle, showed us around the room and made us feel welcome. We talked to Simon many times during our stay about his music industry career, music in general, places to eat, things to do/see, the amazing island he calls home and much more.

We can't wait to go back and highly recommend the Hanalei Surfboard House to anyone looking for a great place to stay on the north shore!

So we checked into the cowgirl suite last week for our honeymoon. The room is nice and location is ideal. Simon was very pleasant upon checking us in.

Then came the 4th day. Upon arriving home we noticed someone had gone in our room. Why someone entered the room in the first place had us concerned because there is no maid service offered. The dishes were done, our personal items moved around including our bathroom supplies, and a bag of chips put in the refrigerator. Weird!

Knock Knock. I welcome SImon in. He goes off on the bed being moved. You see we didn't realize it was on a swivel stand so we angled the bed a few feet to get a better view rather than disturbing the owner. Big mistake! Simon goes off what a burden this is to him. He then goes off on how we attracted cock roaches to his unit. Uh if there are cock roaches on the property that might be a sign to fumigate! Luckily we didn't see any but let it be known. There are cock roaches there! *shrug*

Bottom line is if you want privacy this is not the place to be. The reviews may have been great in the past but let this be your warning. Simon might come after you and insult your wife and get in your face which he did to me. He accused of us "partying like rock stars".

My wife and I are in our late 30's and went to bed every night by 10pm. We usually fell asleep to a movie which there is a decent selection of and put a couple dishes in the sink before bed. Party on!!!!!

Anyhow my party animal wife who is a ballet teacher and yoga instructor normally trashes room in Vegas with Metallica but this time her target was Hanalei on her honeymoon! *wink*

The past track record of the Surf board house is a good one but like the ocean the surf and the tide change............

This is a nice property and the owner obviously works hard to maintain it but if you want to enjoy yourself, feel you have privacy, want to enjoy a quiet night with your beloved wife don't subject yourself to the crazy rants of the owner like we did. I hope he takes a much needed vacation and kicks his shoes off in another unit so he can once again understand why people go on vacation. They do it to relax!

Namaste.......

We had travelled to Kauai on two previous occasions, staying in Princeville both times. However, often we preferred to head down the hill and over the bridge to Hanalei. Therefore, for our third trip, my research on the area led me to Simon Potts and his lovely Hanalei Surfboard House. What a find! With a 3 minute walk to the beach and a 10 minute walk into town, it was exactly what we wanted. Once we arrived we hardly drove our rental car anyplace. No need! Simon has created such a comfy yet luxurious place with vintage decor, tropical gardens, and many special unexpected touches. From the moment we met, he made us feel at home. We stayed in the Cowgirl room. I especially loved the rain head shower, with the delicious smelling provided soap, shampoo and conditioner. A kitchen well stocked with plates, glasses and utensils and a BBQ out back in our own little Zen garden patio made dining in a treat. Simon has really gone above and beyond to make his place outstanding. We plan to visit again as soon as we can, and hope to introduce our friends to Kauai, Hanalei, and Simon.

Much like to gold records that adorn the walls, the Hanalei Surfboard House has clearly risen to the top of the charts as THE place to chill out in Kauai's North Shore. We've visited this part of Kauai 6 times now and have rented all sorts of different accomodations. There are a lot of choices out there...but location location location! This is the best part of the beach at Hanalei Bay, the part known as Pine Trees. If you had a good arm, you could throw a rock from the Surfboard House and hit it. You can also walk into Hanalei town in 10 minutes. For me, that's huge. I don't want to have to jump in the car to go swimming or get coffee in the morning. Plus the Surfboard House is down near the very end of Weke Rd so there is no through traffic.

But the big selling point is the place itself. Constructed with an artist's eye...everything from the gardens to the suites are choc-a-block with style, whether it be whimsical, retro, funk, found art, re-purposed stuff (the bowling balls, the "tree" of cobalt bottles) or the owners private collection of records or the fabulous 1947 jukebox.

The appliances, BBQ, tv, sound system, beds and amenities are all top drawer...you'll want for nothing. But if you do, Simon is the man. He's got all the suggestions you'll need for however you want your vacation shaped. And if you don't need help and want your privacy, he'll stay out of your way. But, he's got great stories since he's a retired English record executive so don't miss out!

We stayed in both the Elvis Suite and the Love Shack...you can't go wrong in either. Book ahead though, this place is rightly very popular.

My husband and I recently returned from our honeymoon in Hanalei. We spent a week in the Love Shack at the Hanalei Surfboard house... and felt like we were at a home away from home. I've never been as comfortable on vacation as I've been at the surfboard house. It was a beautiful, private sanctuary. The Love Shack was exceptionally clean and incredibly cozy. One thing I am incredibly picky about is a comfy bed. We slept like logs every night. VERY comfortable bed. I think every day we discovered some new detail with the decor. It's amazing! Love the fully equipped kitchen. We made breakfast several times when we had to leave early for our adventures. I think one of my favorite things about the Love Shack was the outdoor shower. The courtyard is fenced in and secluded so we used the outdoor shower all week. Loved it!

Simon is an incredible host; he has the best suggestions on where to go eat or where the best places are to snorkel, hike, you name it. And he is right: Hanalei really is the best spot on the island. The Surfboard House was the perfect place for our honeymoon. Thank you, Simon! We can hardly wait to visit again!
