Description: Our relaxed and spacious second story, open-air restaurant has a great ambiance and best picture taking views of Hanalei's mountains and waterfalls. Visitors and locals come time and time again for Bouchon's Pacific-American menu that's filled with a great selection of fresh homemade pupus, local caught seafood, teriyaki chicken, ribs and a premier sushi bar second to none. The famous Copper Bar serves up everything from soft drinks to Saki, including our very popular Mai-Tai. Located in the heart of Hanalei, we have the perfect gathering place to enjoy with family and friends.

“Good food, but questionable service”
Reviewed June 16, 2007

Good sushi, questionable service. Had a good meal and nicely surprised about the Chimay Grand Reserve available here. The problem lies whether it was the server or the management that intended to overcharge us on the final bill. The question remains - Oversight or ethics...?

“Decent Rolls, Extremely High Prices, Nice Ambiance”
Reviewed May 14, 2007

This was possibly the most expensive sushi I've ever had, including Japan, California, Texas, and various other places across the US. Then again, as the week went on, we figured out sushi was expensive pretty much everywhere in Kauai (except for Genki Sushi in the Kukui Grove shopping center next to Macy's, I'd recommend there instead).

It's upstairs in the Ching Young Center in Hanalei (can't miss it). We arrived just after 6pm and there were only about 4 other groups there at the time. We were able to get a nice high table for 2 (with bistro chairs) against the railing. Our view was over the parking lot, across the street to Java Kai, and then beyond to the mountains. Not much of a sunset view, but we liked beyond on the rail. The place filled up more as time went on. We arrived too early for the live music so we missed that, but the ambiance was pretty cool compared to the usual tourist trap tropical trash decor.

The Aloha Roll (Cali roll w/ Ahi tuna on top) and Las Vegas Roll (warm crunch roll + tempura dipping sauce) were decent. A Blues Combo gave us 5pcs nigiri + 8pcs Cali roll + 2 sashimi-style tamago. We also had one spicy tuna hand roll. Plus 1 lava flow and 1 small glass of sake came to a total of around $68. Pretty expensive for the amount of food.

Still, the pieces themselves were huge. I've never seen that much fish draped over rice in Nigiri, ever. So the 5pc Nigiri felt more like 8 pieces. And the rolls were a pretty big size as well.

After finding Genki Sushi, I probably wouldn't go back to Sushi Blues. Still, if you're in Hanalei and don't want to drive all the way down to Lihue, you could do a lot worse. And it's pretty much the only sushi in Hanalei/Princeville. And one note about Genki: It's a conveyor belt little McSushi place where they total your bill by counting colored plates. Atmosphere is nothing like Sushi Blues, but it is a lot cheaper.

“Worst sushi ever!!! Stay away.”
Reviewed March 26, 2007

This was the biggest waste of money. I've found better sushi in airports! The miso soup and the tempura dipping sauce was so salty too. It was very apparent that even the waitress knew the food was bad. We spoke to locals and they were like "oh man, that is terrible Japanese food". We kept hearing about Kintaro's in Kapaa. That was pretty good but not the best I've ever had. Having lived in Seattle and Los Angeles, I know good sushi...and this wasn't even marginal.

Stay far away from Sushi Blues unless you have extra money to burn. The only reason to go back is the drinking. They have a sake sampler and lots of fun drinks...but my friends, that's all.

“We eat here 5 nights out of 7 when we visit...”
Reviewed March 5, 2007

Being from San Francisco and sushi lovers, we have pretty high standards, and we love Sushi Blues. The ambiance is fabulous, the music is always fun, there's great sushi bar action and engaging chefs. The window tables have a beautiful view (eat at sunset, it's lovely). How's the sushi? From fabulous to really good, depending on what you order, the salads are nice and the drinks, as you'd expect, great. Also, the scene at the bar is always a lot of fun. We literally eat here most nights when we stay in Haena on our annual trip to the island.
