Owner description: Since 1999, Doug and Sandy McMaster have been presenting authentic, award winning traditional Hawaiian slack key guitar and ukulele concerts. Fridays 4pm and Sundays 3pm at the Hanalei Community Center. Concerts are also now offered in Princeville at the Princeville Community Center (4334 Emmalani Rd. 6pm Saturdays) and at All Saints' Church (Kapaa 6pm Wednesdays). Their 2000th concert will be held the first week of April 2017. They've been voted Best Live Show by Hawaii Magazine Readers several times. They're a key attraction and an excellent way for visitors to experience the beautiful family music tradition of Hawaiian slack key guitar and ukulele while learning its history, cultural significance, and inspirations behind the songs. Their mission is to ho'omau (continue the tradition) as directed by Raymond and Elodia Kane (Oahu) and Keli'i Mawae (Molokai). The soothing sounds of traditional slack key music relax the audience into 'Hawaii time' bringing peace and Aloha to heart and soul. Concerts are one of the most affordable things to do on Kauai and appeal to both the individual visitor as well as to groups or families. The venues are family friendly and accessible.

We experienced a beautiful evening of slack key guitar and stories of the islands last Friday by the McMasters. Held in the cozy Hanalei community center, the McMasters made us feel at home as we listened to some of the most gorgeous slack key guitar playing you will ever hear. We enjoyed hearing the history of Hawaiian slack key guitar and of their many years on the islands.

The Mc Masters are a couple that are continuing the Hawaiian Slack Key tradition via these concerts. It combines the beautiful music of Doug and his guitar with the 'talk-story' of Sandy. It is full of history, philosophy and aloha spirit. We loved it.

While the concerts have a tradition with Hanalei, they are also presented in Kapa'a on Saturdays. We attended the one in Kapa'a. Check their website for schedule.

This was an outstanding experience. Laid back & authentic. Soothing & heartwarming
The music was beautiful as Doug is extraordinarily talented and Sandy is an amazing storyteller. Let any tension you may have melt away as you relax and learn about this fascinating part of Hawaiian history. We visited them in Hanalai at the community center about mid-town. Turn towards the mountains just before the soccer field.

We spent a relaxing afternoon at the Hanalei community center listening to some of the sweetest sounds coming from a guitar and ukulele. The McMasters are very accomplished musicians as well as story tellers. They are both so soft-spoken and gentle that you get into a very relaxed state! We thoroughly enjoyed this concert. By the time it was over, the McMasters felt like family. Charming people, charming location, and charming pet rooster!

We saw the McMasters in Kapaa. I hesitate to use the word show, even though we paid the $15 per person. It was way too laid back, casual, and almost intimate for that. The performance is in the children of the land center, on the North side of the shopping center area that includes Safeway.
Sandy plays cashier with a warm smile, and her IPad is her cash register. You can get your receipt by email if you pay by card. Kind of cool, one less was of paper to end up in the dryer trap after being wadded in your pocket. Doug is playful and chats before the music starts, Sandy plays accompaniment.
Sandy is a perfect compliment to Doug's music, blending history, anecdote and chat in a fun and serene way. You could say they compliment each other so well that Doug is a perfect co pliment to Sandy's commentary. Together they play a variety of traditional, way way back slack key for 40 minutes before a break. Then they have a delightful drawing for prizes which include a DL for a song, a screensaver, and such. After, they play and comment for another 40 minutes, give or take.
All in all a really, really delightful time. One note about kids. They might not be able to sit still that long, and it is really distracting and disrespectful to other if they don't and make a lot of noise, so leave them with grandma if they can't sit quietly.
