Even with a rain shower passing by, the place was beautiful. Surfing lessons were going on, there was an outrigger canoe on the beach, and the mountains in the background were amazing with the clouds and light coming thru at various angles. We enjoyed a few minutes on our tour under the pier out of the rain and watched the local activities going on around us. Would love to spend a week here relaxing. No high-rises, just old-time charm.

A beautiful place to watch the sunset--one of my favorite natural beauty spots in the world. The pier is also a great place to stand and throw your lei petals out to sea before leaving the island. Remember, tradition says that doing this ensures your return.

Long ago, the Hanalei pier was used to load and unload ship cargos, before tsunamis filled the bay with enough sand to prohibit such commerce (mainly rice from the same fields that now grow taro). The pier still stands, having been rebuilt and refurbished after various hurricanes and from its long existence. The lastest upgrade was in 2013 and you can walk out on it. It juts out into Hanalei Bay and provides a spectacular view of one of the most beautiful bay and mountain scenes in all the Pacific. To the right of the pier, adjacent Blackpot Beach has shade, picnic tables, bathrooms, an outside shower, and parking. There is some parking right on the beach for surfers, locals, and anyone else. Also parking in the lot behind Blackpot and on the lead-in to the beach. To the left of the pier is a lovely sandy beach with lifeguard station. Usually gentle waves are good for families to bathe in, with the rougher surf farther out. Sign up for surfing lessons with world-famous surfer Titus Kinimaka, whose pickup and boards are often located right by the pier (office in Hanalei Town).

From Kuhio Highway in the town, take Aku Road toward the ocean, turn right onto Weke Road, and follow it out to the pier and Blackpot. Very much worth the trip!

Head down to Hanalei Beach at sunset and take a stroll along the pier. It won't take you long as it's pretty short but it attracts a lot of people whether fishing, jumping in or simply walking up and down. Combine it with a walk along the beach and back and you've got an hour or so of relaxation in a stunning part of Hawaii.

Wonderful place to stop and take pictures, hang out on the beach or fish from the pier. Amazing scenery and not far from restaurants and little shops. A great place to laze around for the day.
