As recommended in "The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook," the apple cobbler is fantastic (but now up to $3 each). The other pastries look great, especially the carrot cake.

The recomended chili chicken was very good. The teri beef was terrible. Rice was clumpy and needed lots of soy. Onion rings over cooked. Order at the counter from an indifferent unfriendly cashier. My bad for leaving a tip in jar. Cash only. Doubt we will go back.

The Village Snack Shop & Bakery, located in Hanalei at the Ching Young Village Shopping Center is a must stop, at least once during your stay. The North Shore has many venues for upscale dining but few opportunities to dine with working locals who are not necessarily chillin" in paradise. A breakfast and lunch venue, the snack shack is open from 6:30 am - 4:00 pm Mondays through Saturday and 6:30 - 3:00 on Sunday .

As the title suggests, for lunch, the chili pepper chicken is the renowned headliner, served plate style with white or brown rice, toss greens or macaroni salad ($8.25). A variey of hamburgers and sandwiches, french fries and onion rings, hotdogs, corndogs, teriyaki choices and ala carte options are available. You can pay $8-$11. virtually anywhere else in Hanalei for a simple hamburger or stop by the shack, for inside, courtyard or carry-out dining for essentially the same burger for $4.50. This is not a tourist destination.

For breakfast the menu offers virtual Hawaiian fare featuring the Loco Moco (hamburger patty, 2 eggs, brown gravy, wheat toast, white or brown rice, or hashbrowns ($7.75) and portugese sausage options in breakfast sandwiches, wraps, omelets, basics toast, eggs, meats. This is a counter ordering venue and you do not necessarily get the million dollar tourist smile and service, but you do get the feeling they have been doing this quite awhile and the Hanalei niche they have carved out definitly works for them and their loyal customers. A humble interior at best but, as stated earlier, a glimpse of the non-resort Kauai, probably the real Hawaii.

One important mention to close. This is also a bake shop and if you do nothing else, you will do yourself great favor by purchasing a slice of their freshly made Haupia Pie, vanillia or chocolate. It will quickly bring you back to swaying palms and blue water paradise and send you on your way with a smile.

We came here for breakfast. I don't think we fully took advantage of this place, as the specialties seem to be of the lunch/dinner variety.

This is a little hole in the wall in the inside of a shopping center in Hanalei. The service is your usual diner-greasy spoon-prickly. You order at the counter and are called when your food is ready.

I had the macadamia nut waffles, which, while very simple, definitely hit the spot. They didn't skimp on the macadamia nuts in this Hawaiian twist on an old favorite. Yum!

Next time, we'll have to try one of the plate lunches. Go for the inexpensive prices and good food; don't go for the ambiance.
