Tropical Bamboo Hideaway
Reviewed November 22, 2007

We stayed at the Tropical Bamboo Hideaway in July. We LOVED it!!! The home is lovely, just like the photos on the website and it's fascinating, one of the first Bamboo homes to be built on Kauai - while we there people kept stopping to take photos of it.

The location was perfect- just across the road from a beautiful beach and it was great being able to go across the road to the local Coffee house in the morning if we felt like it for latte and the best bagels.... We also had dinner at the Mediterranean Gourmet, also just across the road from the house, great mediterranean food with an ocean view while you dine.

We had a great time at Tunnels and Kee beaches, just 5 minutes away and we enjoyed the short drive along the gorgeous beach road into pretty Hanalei (don't miss the sushi at Sushi Blues! )

If you scuba, the dive tour place right at the first driveway for Tunnels was great, especially the night dive. Being 5 minutes from a clean bed and a hot shower made it really easy to dive there as much as 4 times a day. Exploring the inner reef is pretty fun, but then the outer reef once I got familiar was incredible, including the cleaning station! You could walk it in 10-15 minutes if you weren't dragging gear with you.

The house was absolutely clean on our arrival and we had everything we needed. There's a little store in Wainiha halfway in between the house and Hanalei.

It was really nice being up in the cool breeze and I absolutely loved the views from the lanai. I really liked it far better than the 'developed' places in Princeville, although the golfing is unbelievable at http://www.princeville.com/golf.html.

We have been recommending Tropical Bamboo Hideaway to all our friends - we hope to come back next year, this time, more in the wintery months.

STAY AWAY!! What a cleverly deceptive website. The photos on this site make this house like a secluded jungle paradise. Let me tell you the house does NOT match the photos. It is a pieced together kit house precariously perched on top of 40" stilts in a somewhat shady neighborhood. You need to hike up 3 sets of stairs to just get from the carport to the front door and even the smallest breeze sets the house swaying. I felt seasick the entire time. While you can see the ocean from one part of the lanai, the main view is the neighbor's below ground pool dug up and sitting on the "lawn", the construction going on across the way and to the front, and the neighbor's overcrowded carport, stuffed with various junk.

The location is terrible, a dark and windy 15 minute drive into Hanalei; the closest place for restaurants or stores. If you get hungry, forget being able to grab a quick bite.

And those are just the location disppointments! We arrived at 4PM as instructued by the property manager. The house cleaner was still cleaning. Having us there made her rush, resulting in a seriously subpar cleaning job. My husband and I ended up spending the first night finishing the cleaning and making the place look nice before our friends arrived so they didn't experience our same initial disappointment.

Soon after arriving, we got a call from the property manager asking if the kitchen sink was leaking. Upon checking we saw that the sink wasn't even attached to the drain and the bottom of the cabinet was completely drenched. We cleaned up the cabinet, put a bucket under and were instructed to not use the sink or dishwasher until they could get a plumber out to fix it. This was Saturday, a plumber finally came on Monday. We were also informed that the oven didn't work, they would be sending a repair person to fix it, but in the meantime it could not be used. A repair person finally came on Thursday and determined that it could not be fixed. Additionally, on the first night we noticed yet another lovely thing with the house, ants, gnats, spiders and mosquitos EVERYWHERE. The light switch, perimetter of the house and inside trash were COVERED in ants, there were dead ants piled along every edge of the house, the windows would be covered in gnats as soon as it got dark, a giant cane spider crawled into my shoe the first night and we were all quickly eaten by mosquitos. Then, on the last morning, I went to put my 1 year old down for a nap and a giant cane spider crawled out of the bed. Needless to say, he didn't get a nap that morning!

For a week's stay, we were given 1 roll of toilet paper and paper towels, requiring us to make a trip to the store to get these small necessities.

The manager called us several times during our stay making apologies for all of the inconveniences, but at no time made any offer to compensate.

The best came when after paying a cleaning fee and $500 deposit we were informed that they would be keeping our entire deposit because, despite paying a cleaning fee and never being informed as such "we need to have the house and all items in it clean and as they were when we arrived". We were charged $295 for a mattress pad, $130 for sheets, $50 extra cleaning fee, $50 admin fee and $20 in tax.

Save yourself the money and headaches and STAY AWAY FROM the Tropical Bamboo Hideaway.
