Ranked #2 of 7 Hotels in Waikoloa

We recently stayed at the HGVC in Waikoloa - we had a 2 bedroom suite for 6 of us (2 small children). It was a terrific unit - we got ground floor, which was right next to the BBQ's and looked out at the golf course. It was very spacious - even for 6 people. The only negative is the kitchen is a bit awkwardly designed - especially is 2 people are working in it. But overall - the place was fabulous.

The best part is the fact that you can use all the facilities at the Hilton Waikoloa resort. We spent the week camped out at the Lagoon - which was perfect for the 4 and 6 year old. We bought the family package for the week - which gave us access to kayaks, paddle boats, snorkel and fins, kiddie boats, etc. It was about $250 and it kept the kids entertained all week. The Lagoon is also warmer than most of the pools at the resort! The snorkelling is wonderful - there are numerous sea turtles, eels, and pretty fish to look at. Also the dolphins are spectacular. If you can afford it - do the swim with the dolphins. Also a hit were the water slides - there are 2 and they are really fun for all ages. And an insider tip - at one of the pools there is a little food market and they have ice cream for $1 a scoop from 3 - 4 pm every day (generous scoops!).

This Hilton is the most luxurious hotel and the most relaxing place we have ever been too. The ambiance is incredible, there is wildlife everywhere, we saw 13 Green Sea turtles on out first day. they have 7 dolphins on site which are spectacular to watch. Loved the cocktails, very comfortable rooms too. We would go back in a heart beat.

We atyed here Jan 1st for 4 nights at the end of our 18 day stay on the islands. We went to Maui for 2 weeks and as a luxury decided to come over to the Hilton for a poolside relaxing few days. We originally planned to stay at the hotel but because my mum joined us on the trip (making our group 3 adults 1 child 1 infant) it became too expensive and so I booked into the HGVC as we were told we could still use the hotel facilities (my eldest son was really looking forward to all the activities they had going on there)

We had the best time. I am actually grateful that we had to change our plans because the accommodation at the HGVC was so comfortable. We stayed at building 16 which overlooks the road, but there was no noise and the view beyond then displayed the mountains. The master bedroom had the best bathroom all open plan. Everything you needed was provided including daily maid service.

I think the most exemplory aspect of the accomodation had to be the staff though. When I enquired about a doctor for my baby the front desk were very helpful, and the next day the lady at the desk asked how he was feeling. The shuttle bus waited for us when my eldest had to make an unexpected dash for the bathroom as he arrived at the hotel - we didn't even ask he just must of seen him dash off and waited for us both! On the last day as we were leaving (and everything packed) my son wanted one last dip in the pool and when he came out and I said to him I had no towel one member of staff came over with one without being asked. We were made to feel so welcome and part of the family.

It is unfortunate that they don't have a small dining facility on the actual HGVC site, although there is the King's Grill which is a 5 minute walk from the main gate at the King's Golf Club and serves delicious breakfasts! And of course having the shuttle means there is nothing preventing you dining in the restaurants at the hotel (5 minutes by bus), King's Shops (10 minutes) or Queens market (15 minutes). The shuttle then picks you up.

We hired a truck while we were there so that we could also do a few more things and it is well worth the drive to Hilo and the Volcano. The sites are breathtaking along the way (better than the road to Hana in Maui I'd say!) In fact something about this Island captivated me more so than Maui in the 4 short days that I was there and I would love to return to spend more time here one day, and it will definately be at the HGVC when I come back.

This was a family Christmas trip – we like to have a “Family Travel Christmas” every other year. We found the HGVC property on the Hilton website, and it sounded perfect for our family.

This was to be a 2 island, 8 night trip to Hawaii, our first trip to Hawaii. We should have started our trip with the HGVC property in Oahu for 3 nights, then move to the HGVC Waikoloa for 5 nights. Unfortunately, we were in the middle of the Seattle snowstorm and were not able to make it to Los Angeles to catch our Hawaii flight. After a night in SEA-TAC, many hours on my cell phone working with AK Air and Delta, and about $1900 in rebooking fees we found we could not get to Hawaii until Christmas Eve and would have to spend 3 nights in Los Angeles before we could get seats on a flight. The 24th was the day we were supposed to be checking in at HGVC Waikoloa, so we skipped Oahu entirely. This was the most stressful vacation ever!

However, once we hit the warmth and sun the stress melted away. We checked into our HGVC 2 bdrm/2 bath top floor unit overlooking the golf course. We were in building 15. It was beautiful, something I could easily live in forever. The interiors were decorated nicely, you had everything you needed in the kitchen, and the master bathroom was fabulous with the large soaking/Jacuzzi tub and very large shower.

The pool area (heated pool) was beautiful, and the spa was the perfect place to relax. They have a bar at the pool that made delicious drinks. The bar did close about 6pm I believe, so that was a bit disappointing for evening spa time.

HGVC does also offer some activities, however we did not partake in any of them. We were only there 5 nights, so our time was quite limited.

We knew Christmas might be very busy, so we pre-ordered our prime rib and steaks from the Island Gourmet Market in the Queen’s Marketplace. They had everything ready for us when we got there on Christmas Eve. Nice store with good quality meats and produce. The kitchen was well stocked with pots/pans; dishes; cooking utensils. The only thing you needed was your food and condiments. We stocked the fridge with breakfast supplies, & cooked 2 dinners while we were there. We expected to not have maid service, however someone came daily!

HGVC has a scheduled shuttle to run you between the hotel, the Kings Shops & the Queen’s Marketplace. It runs every 30 minutes and is very prompt. However, we enjoyed walking everywhere and took the shuttle now and then. One thing to note while you are packing – bring a couple small flashlights. At night, it is very dark and you will appreciate a flashlight if you plan on walking. It is about a 10 minute walk from HGVC to the hotel resort.

We loved the resort and would stay here again in a heartbeat! (Already planning for next year…)

Stayed at Kings Land in late December. Four buildings up and running, seven more under construction. One pool is open, Lobby is in a nice temporary building. Construction is visible from the parking lot, not the apartments, and noise is not a factor. The apartments face the pool and/or the golf course. The shuttle to the Hilton resort property runs promptly at 30 minute intervals, it takes about 15 minutes to get there. Grocery store that just opened at Queens Marketplace is a fancy ABC store. The best grocery store is about a ten minute drive up the hill to Waikoloa. Unit decor is totally over the top and rather formal. A large wooden dining table dominates the kitchen area, kitchen is well equipped with appliances, pots, bowls etc. A giant bathtub sits in the middle of the 13 x 15 master bath, with a party shower. No door on the shower so it's drafty. Hilton Waikola Resort remains very large, boat and monorail service is so sporadic you should not count on catching one. We were there Xmas week and had no problems finding chairs and did not stand in line for anything. Kings Point is a luxurious home base while you explore the Big Island. Rent a car and drive to the other Big Island Attractions.

This is a beautiful place, We stayed in a 2 bedroom condo that was very nice and had everything we needed!, beds were very comfortable and clean, outside of the loud neighbors we had above us the place was great! The staff was really nice, We happened to be there during the election and felt as though we were at home with friends, We stayed for 2 weeks and got to feel very much at home, The pool is a bit on the small side but is heated and very comfortable, We did rent a house on the other side of the island for a night so we could visit the volcano and not have to drive back, very good idea. We would definetly recomend this resort , lots of Aloha

We just stayed at HGVC Waikoloa Village as an RCI exchange and had a great vacation.

We stayed in a 2 BR plus unit in building 19 facing the golf course.
The unit was well equipped and maintained and my wife was impressed on how it was tastefully decorated.
Overall quality was very high and I believe the unit was fairly new.
We were traveling with another couple and had ample room in the unit for the 4 or us.

The Bay Club and The HGVC suites are on the same contiguous property and both are managed by Hilton with the difference being that the Bay Club units are a bit older. You can see the mixed reviews as to quality as not all the units have been updated. The welcome letter indicated that the Bay Club was doing renovations and scheduled to be complete in 2010 and 2011. HGVC is virtually complete and they also building a similar club about 1/4 mile up the road on the Kings Golf Course.

I rank the resort at any overall 9 out of 10.

On the plus side, the resort is very accommodating with beautiful grounds and helpful staff.. There is a convenient shuttle to take you over to the Hilton resort where they have beautiful grounds and pools The health club ( on the Bay Club side) was recently updated with several new weight and aerobic machines.

On the negative side, the only real problem was the sound proofing between the floors. The people above us were very noisy with rambunctious kid stampeding across the floor every night. Although we called the main desk to make a call . the noise continued for a good part of the week. The pool at the club house is very small and there are no restaurants on site. But for these few issues I may have ranked the resort as a 10.

Please keep in mind the lack of inexpensive places near the resort to buy groceries and recommend you go to Costco ( 5 miles south of airport) , Safeway or Walmart ( an additional 10 minutes south) before heading the 20 miles north to the resort. The Big Island is very big and be prepared for long drives when going out for dinner or for the day.

Activities

My wife did the Dolphin encounter and the contact with the Dolphins was very minimal. They offered a discount of 20% but even with that the fee was over $160 and didn't feel it was a good value. In Mexico or other locations you are able to actually swim with the dophins and have much more interaction.

There is a great beach ( Hapuna Beach) about 10 minutes north of the resort
Continue another 10 minutes north for lunch or dinner at Cafe Pesto.
If you drive north I recommend Island Dreams( i think that was the name) in Hawi for great ice cream or coffee

One day we started out early to see the Volcano and stopped at Tex's for great Malasadas ( donuts) and stopped before Hilo at Akaka Falls ( easier walk) before going to Hilo for the market, Pescatores for lunch ( great Italian food at a fair price), Big Island Candy Factory ( for yummy samples) and then to the park to see the active plume going out of the volcano. At sunset we doubled back toward Hilo and went south on Route 130 to end for a short hike over the lava flow to see the glow of the current lava as it enters into the Pacific. This was an all day event but worth the journey.

We also rented snorkel gear in Kailua- Kona at Boss Frogs for a very low price and headed down to 2 step for great snorkeling

We usually had dinner in our unit ( using the new grills in between to units) as we had busy days and didn't want to venture out.

The Big Island does not provide much night life unless you want to drive to Kailua-Kona and hang out at a bar..

In all HGVC is a high quality exchange and the Big Island provided a great vacation.
