I was a little hesitant after reading some of the negative reviews but decided to go for it. I’m so happy I did, it was amazing. We stayed in the Makai Towers above the spa. It was amazing to have a view of the ocean & volcano from our room. It should not be a shock to anyone that Hawaii is expensive. As with any resort, if you eat/drink exclusively on property, be prepared to pay for that convenience. The grounds are beautiful. Just seeing the sea turtles & other tropical fish in the lagoons took up almost an entire afternoon. There’s a small shopping area about a mile walk/$2 trolley ride. There is a small grocery/abc store where you can pick up souvenirs, wine, & snacks. The Legends Luau was spectacular. I personally thought the KPC restaurant was a bit overrated. The option of ocean front dining was gorgeous but the food was mediocre. The staff was ultra friendly & professional. I definitely cannot wait to return.

While the property is beautiful, overall would not recommend others to stay at this hotel. Parking is an outrageously unnecessary $27 per day, and depending on which building your room is in it can take up to 30 minutes to walk from car to room. The shuttle trams/boats are available, but you can be standing around waiting for long periods of time just to board. Wasting time just trying to get to my vehicle is not how I like to spend my vacations. On site restaurants are insanely overpriced and really nothing special - for two drinks and an ice cream sundae we paid about $45 (after tax and tip). Room was nice, spacious and very comfortable. If you are looking to just spend all your time on the resort and don’t mind overpaying for parking and food/drink, this might be a good fit for you.

WNR,

Thank you for your latest review, your comments are greatly appreciated. With such a large resort the trams/boats provide a modernized way around the facility, however, the walking paths along the ocean are wonderful and meant to relax and unwind our guests during their visit. Their are multiple types of restaurants on property from our casual Boat Landing Cantina to our Fine Dining restaurant Kamuela Provision Company, which has been highly rated as one of the top restaurants on the Big Island. Each has a different price point for our guests to enjoy.

Beautiful resort with facilities to accommodate everyone. The resort is so big that you may need to take a light rail from building to building. This is a resort where you stay and chill by the pool or the lagoon all day. My feedback is that F&B is very expensive so prepare to pack some food & drinks before your arrival.

After check in take a monorail train to your hotel room. Change in to bathing clothes and swim with the dolphins on site or shop or lay on the private beaches and pools or take a snack or visit the Kona tap room filled with Kona brewery’s best beers. Showtime when the sunsets and gourmet cooking in the hotels restaurant. Or why not a round of golf if you get the time. Who needs a room when there is so much to do?

Starting with the positive, this Hilton property's location and setting is beautiful and grand. The physical facilities are spacious, worn and dated. Rooms are large, somewhat spartan and again worn and dated ... feels like no facilities upgrade since the early 70's. Really time for management to reinvest and make this jewell sparkle again. The "train" is slow and infrequent and apparently was designed to give it a theme park panache to a large piece of real estate. After riding once I was over it. Walking was faster and easier and the open air "museum" walkway from building to building has some interesting pan-asian artifacts. The Dolphin Experience pool seemed a little sad. Really a small habitat to keep these beautiful animals. Probably feels like a goldfish bowl to them.

Restaurants: endured 2 forgettable restaurants (Konan Tap Room and Boat Landing Cantina) each mediocre, terrible wine selection, good beer selection, and porous wooden serving plates that likely will not pass a health inspection. The 60's 70's band was really the best part along with cheerful service team. KPC Kamuela Provision Company was superb and I would visit this restaurant again. Fresh delicious fish (turf available) with a wonderful view of the evening sunset on the ocean. Definitely need reservations. Area restaurants outside of the hotel are quite a hike.

I can see that this property was really amazing several decades ago. Needs a facelift and would not return until it happened.

We're so glad to hear that you enjoyed yourself with us! We did want to assure you that Dolphin Quest, the organization that we partner with, takes excellent care of the dolphins. Their highly trained staff treats the animals with dignity, care, and respect. We encourage you to reach out to them directly with any questions or concerns. We also wanted to mention that our Ocean Tower is currently being renovated. We hope you'll consider joining us for another vacation once the construction is complete. Wishing you well in the meantime! -Simon, tripadvisor@hiltonwaikoloavillage.com
