“Not Family Friendly”

Agree with review "don't go with kids". Year round retirement community makes it very obvious that children are not welcome, especially children with disabilities like our Autistic son. We experienced very little compassion or understanding of his behavioral limitations from the residence at the resort. However, resort staff was extremely helpful and considerate.

We stayed in unit 17D and loved the entire property. It's well maintained and has a great pool with beautiful views of the ocean. The condo had a great kitchen with everything we needed and the washer & dryer was great. We had two issues however; the beds were astoundingly uncomfortable. It literally felt like we were sleeping on a box spring. For the price of the condo and how great everything else is, it seems like the beds could have been way better. Also, there was mold growing on the AC vent in the living room. Overall, a great stay with only a couple of issues.

We stayed in unit 13a and had a wonderful stay. Great lanai to whale watch. Well appointed condo with all the comforts of home. Close to Ocean Club on the property. This unit comes with discounted golf privileges at two great Waikola courses. We took Roberts Around Island tour, well worth it. We rented through Abbey Vacations. Any unit in building 13 or 14 has a great seaside view. Some previous people complained about air conditioner noise from club but it did not bother us. Make sure to go to the club around sunset and hear the man blow his conch horn. Highly recommend the Hali'i Kai property.

The property itself is beautiful. But don't go if you are a family.with kids.
It has a retirement community atmosphere. There are rules for and against everything.
I could have gone to my parents retirement complex in Florida if I wanted to be policed.
I do not have rowdy children- they just want to swim and play in a pool when on vacation.
Of course they do not tell you that - when you are making your reservation and stating
you have kids.- they will gladly take your money - then you arrive and told no playing.
Very formal and stiff atmosphere. Must be 13 to go into the gym.
I am so glad we spent almost $4000. GRRRRRR. I Hate it!

Just returned from a week stay in 10E which is ground unit facing ocean off the golf course. This unit was perfect for my parents, two sisters, niece & I. About a block from the ocean club which was beautiful and had such wonderful & helpful staff. My sister & parents had some mobility issues, but staff was always willing to offer a ride home in the golf cart.
I have only praise for this unit & it's owners. Thanks so much for sharing this home. It's a trip I will never forget. It felt like walking into a dream home. I will return to the big island & 10E any chance i can. Thank you again hali'i Kai, kona coast vacations &other unit owners! Mahalo from Minnesota.

We spent a week in December in a 3 bedroom, ground floor condo two buildings back from the beach (not a sandy beach, but lava). The pools, hot tub, and exercise space as well as the restaurant are located in the front facing the beach. The Hilton resort is across the golf course that separates the 2 resorts?

The pool area is exceptional, the pebble-bottom hot-tub, and the exercise machines facing the water combine to make this a most pleasurable spot. The food from the cafe poolside for lunch and early dinner is excellent and well priced. The condo units stretch back to the main road, and it is a pretty long walk to the "club" facilities from the main gate. For any traveler who is challenged with a long walk, be sure to ascertain the location prior to booking. Our unit was absolutely delightful and contained everything we needed for utensils and our stay. Housekeeping comes in once a week to change linens and replenish towels the grounds (and oh yes, there is a tennis court between the main entrance and club), trees, plants are simply gorgeous.

As has been mentioned previously, you really do need a car in order to get around to restaurants, shopping, and the condos are individually owned and furnished. It is incumbent therefore to check out preferably by review or with the management what to expect. There is not a children's pool or play area.

We have stayed in the major hotels (Marriott and Hilton) in Waikoloa on previous trips, and while we have always been satisfied, Halii Kai is far and away our favorite.

2 bedroom condo(#7?). Beautiful resort. YOU MUST HAVE A CAR!! restaurant on property does not serve breakfast, although the brochure may state otherwise. Only place walkable is the hilton across the golf course @ $30pp for breakfast buffet. Even the King and
Queen shops are too far to walk, grocery stores are expensive. Rent a car to drive to Safeway or Walmart. Regarding our unit, it was spectacular, although the bedding in the twin bedded room was shabby. Our stay was 5 nites, we were ground floor, partial ocean view, the property has no beach , although it is right on the water, large black lava rocks everywhere...The natural landscaping is all black lava rocks, beautiful man made manicured grounds with Palm trees, flowers, grass beautiful!! Pool and restaurant bar very nice, peaceful and clean. Travelled with our 12 & 18 yr olds, they loved the pool and condo. Everyone had their own space- laundry room, high end kitchen/great room with dining area and living room, master bath-wow, nice bath for other bedroom. master BR had a flat screen tv, DVD player as well as the one in the living room. Also, 4 family oriented DVDs. We wanted to keep the place clean but no vacuum... The office staff were ditsy. Our condo didn't have towels we could take to the beach, so we used supplied bath towels and washed them a lot. Pool staff is really strict with not leaving pool area with their towels. Depending on the unit you get, it may have a gas grill on lanai, ours did not but you are free to use pool area's 2 grills.

Unit 13, and its connected units I noted were ocean VIEW!!

It's a good 10 minute walk across the golf course to the Hilton( massive complex with monorail, boat...). Not a designated walking path though, kind of scary at night, we decided to walk out of our way to walk on the streets in lieu of the dark golf course. Can't comment on Halii Kai restaurant, we ate at the hilton on night 1 and did hilton luai one other night. Ate one breakfast at LAVA JAVA in town and a Fodor travel book recommended Italian restaurant an other. Otherwise we cooked big breakfasts in our condo and remaining dinners.
