“Beautiful suites but not great for kids”
Reviewed November 16, 2012

The condos are beautiful and we loved having space and a kitchen. The walk to the pool took a full ten minutes from our unit. The pool really is an oasis with stunning ocean views but the kids were quickly bored as we had to shush them because of all the no noise no splashing rules. Overall it was too quiet and lacked atmosphere.

my husband and i spent 6 days in unit 7b. loved the comfortable, ocean-view condo with an awesome lanai. having a kitchen was awesome, we got to cook a few of our own meals and made our own breakfasts- saved money and hassle (think: eating in pajamas) vs. eating out for every meal which was great... there are a few grocery stores close by (waikoloa village is cheaper than the one in the queen's center on the hilton property, or there's a costco in kona) and of course a variety of restaurants.

one thing i will point out: waikoloa is a drive from anywhere. it's great if you just want to chill at the pool or the beach and do some on-campus shopping, but if you want to go do/look at stuff (think: waterfalls, mauna kea, hilo, volcanoes national park) it's a trek. even kailua-kona is 18 miles. just something to take into consideration.

i would highly recommend the halii kai to couples or families with children- our unit had a second bedroom with two twin beds and a separate bath, would be great for a family. a VERY good value for the money!

We stayed in unit 3A and it was beyond wonderful!! Very spacious, upper floor unit that was well equipped with just about anything you would ever need. Loved the beach chairs, umbrella and cooler that guests are able to use should they choose to spend a day at the beach. We went to Hapuna Beach for the day and used the chairs, cooler etc and it was wonderful. Went to the pool, loved the Mai Tais and views of the ocean. Very, very nice pool area! Don't hesitate to stay here, you won't be disappointed!!!

Stayed here because of a great living social deal, total of 4 nights, upgraded to the sea view. The check in staff were increadibly friendly and exceptionally helpful. The property is extensive, as are ALL resorts northwest of the airport (Wiakoloa area, Mauna Lani area, Hualalai!!!). We stayed in an ocean view (17G) 3 bdrm and 3 bath and we couldn't have been happier. The unit was immaculate! Amazing 2 story layout (starts on 2nd level with 2nd story on third level), 4 star plus kitchen and amenities. The master suite was ridiculous with an amazingly comfortable 4 post bed, gigantic bathroom with huge shower, spa tub, double sinks and walk in closet. Large TV's throughout. Great lower floor bedroom with dbl or queen bed, nice third bedroom upstairs with two twin beds for our kids and another bathroom! Grill on lower lanai, and great chairs on master bedroom lanai. We had a party of six (2 yr old, 3 yr old, 2 30 somethings, 2 60 somethings). So family friendly. The staff (everyone from front desk, grounds crew and cleaning) were exceptional. The kids absolutely loved the pool!! 1 1/2 ft deep to 4 ft deep, exceptionally kid friendly (my 3 year old made many friends!!). There is a large pool seeting area with rock bottom whirlpool (awsome), and a nice bar (very spendy, stick to the happy hour specials), and restaraunt (never did eat there). We received 2 free drink coupons and 2 20% off restaraunt coupons on arrival. Honestly we didn't want to leave. We can't substantiate the negative reviews, we found nothing but exceptional family friendly service, HGTV worthy property and residence, and truely amazing views (you certainly know what property view will be if you look before you reserve, if you have questions call and ask, they are sooo friendly, you get what you pay for as anywhere else!!!!). We loved this place!!!!! Highly recommend and we will be back!!!!

Room Tip: Ocean views are awsome, 17 G was a 3 bed 3 bath and tremendous (not ocen front, those are way more e...

We chose Halii Kai over the Hilton, and this was a great choice.

Our unit was great. Nicer than it looks in the photos.
Two bedrooms and 2 bathrooms means lots of space for everyone.
A well equipped kitchen allows you to cook, or just have snacks, breakfast etc. in the unit.
The kitchen has dishes for 8, which means you don't need to wash them constantly (there's a dishwasher).

We loved the activity closet.
It includes two boogie boards, a few kids' snorkling sets (of unknown quality), beach chairs, women straw hats, a beach bag and beach towels.
It really helped spending time at the beaches.

The pool club is beautiful, but lacks any shade, which is a big drawback. We preferred the beaches.
The community hammocks are nice too.

What's missing is a "book" with more details on the unit.
For example, when we ran out of shampoo and soap, we bought our own, not knowing whether we were supposed to get them refilled. Different condos work differently.

Highly recommended.

This was our first trip to the big island. For the past three years we have been going to Maui but my wife wanted to experience something new. This trip was also different because we travelled there with my parents who are well into their seventies - dad also has some health issues. We were there a total of 10 days. Our group had six - my parents, my two kids seven and nine and my wife and me. For me it was critically important to be together but also have our own space. We stayed in a three bedroom three bath townhouse 6F. The size and layout of the unit was great. There were two bedrooms upstairs and one downstairs which was perfect for my parents because my dad has difficulty walking. The unit was well furnished, good sized kitchen and bathrooms a total of three showers and a tub which my kids used on a regular basis. There were two balconies and a grill on one which we used a number of times. This unit was described as an ocean view which I think is a bit of a stretch. Yes you can see the ocean but it is a long way away. But it was still amazing at sunset. The main floor had a nice open plan with the kitchen, dining and living room all open. There was a big tv in the living room that well used watching the Olympics. It was great having a kitchen and washer and dryer with young kids. The resort is really not a resort it is a condo complex. Hence do not expect maid service. On the fifth day they changed the sheets, gave some towels which they are a bit stingy with and took out the trash. The place is well kept and beautiful. The property is long and skinny with just a small bit actually on the water. There is a naturalistic black bottom pool which is at the end of the property. It looks great but is really a lounging pool and totally impractical for swimming. It is very small and the deepest part is only four feet. There is a restaurant there but we never went there although it appeared to be well used. We had little interaction with staff because this is not a resort there is no concierge so we ended up going to the Hyatt to get all our info about things to do on the island. They were super helpful and we booked a couple of activities thru the Hyatt. Another minor issue was the carpet in the unit it was really dirty. Maybe people don't know that in Hawaii you take your shoes off in the house frankly a good practice if your shoes have just gone thru an airport mens room. A sign to remind people might be a good thing. Also the grill needed cleaning. Would stay there again if we return to the big island.

Room Tip: Ocean view or ocean front

We stayed 8 nights in unit 14B (2BR/2BA), which we rented through Abbey Vacation Rentals. The unit was immaculate with tasteful furniture and decor and a full ocean view. The kitchen had modern, stainless appliances and granite countertops. One of the big advantages of this complex vs. others we considered is the poolside restaurant which offers lunch, appetizers, and dinner. We found the quality and prices to be better than typical hotel restaurants and the staff was friendly and pleasant. This complex is not easily accessible to a beach, but beautiful beaches and good snorkeling are a short drive (5-10 minutes) away. Our unit came supplied with beach towels, umbrella, and chairs, as well as a few beach toys and a basketball and tennis balls for use in the complex's courts. The pool area did not get very crowded and while there are not shade umbrellas right around the pool, there is a shaded area with comfortable outdoor furniture in the pool area. The master suite was spacious and private. There is a laundry room right by the front door, which is great for stowing beach gear right as you step in the door, without having to drag it through the condo. The air conditioning and ceiling fans all worked easily and well. Our unit was on the ground floor and had an outdoor kitchen and small bbq grill as well as access to a grassy area overlooking the ocean and lava field.

If you are looking for a condo experience where you can cook some of your own meals and make yourself at home, yet still have access to a restaurant/bar by the pool, I would not hesitate to recommend Hali'i Kai. 14B is a beautiful unit and the people at Abbey Vacation Rentals were pleasant and helpful in coordinating the rental.

Room Tip: Buildings 13-15 offer oceanfront views and are close to the pool.
