Halii Kai Resort at Waikoloa Beach
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 15, 2012

We stayed 8 nights in unit 14B (2BR/2BA), which we rented through Abbey Vacation Rentals. The unit was immaculate with tasteful furniture and decor and a full ocean view. The kitchen had modern, stainless appliances and granite countertops. One of the big advantages of this complex vs. others we considered is the poolside restaurant which offers lunch, appetizers, and dinner. We found the quality and prices to be better than typical hotel restaurants and the staff was friendly and pleasant. This complex is not easily accessible to a beach, but beautiful beaches and good snorkeling are a short drive (5-10 minutes) away. Our unit came supplied with beach towels, umbrella, and chairs, as well as a few beach toys and a basketball and tennis balls for use in the complex's courts. The pool area did not get very crowded and while there are not shade umbrellas right around the pool, there is a shaded area with comfortable outdoor furniture in the pool area. The master suite was spacious and private. There is a laundry room right by the front door, which is great for stowing beach gear right as you step in the door, without having to drag it through the condo. The air conditioning and ceiling fans all worked easily and well. Our unit was on the ground floor and had an outdoor kitchen and small bbq grill as well as access to a grassy area overlooking the ocean and lava field.

If you are looking for a condo experience where you can cook some of your own meals and make yourself at home, yet still have access to a restaurant/bar by the pool, I would not hesitate to recommend Hali'i Kai. 14B is a beautiful unit and the people at Abbey Vacation Rentals were pleasant and helpful in coordinating the rental.

Room Tip: Buildings 13-15 offer oceanfront views and are close to the pool.

My wife and I stayed at Hali’i Kai for 9 days, and WE LOVED IT!!! Overall, the property was quiet, very well-manicured, and very modern.

We stayed in condo 17B, which was the subject of one of the three “terrible” reviews about this resort (more about that later). We found it quite nice! The kitchen had a very new, updated look to it: stainless steel appliances, great cabinets, pendant lighting, and granite countertops. The kitchen has lots of other useful necessities, like microwave, 4-slice toaster, coffee maker, blender, knife set, cutting board, electric can opener, etc. There is also lots of teflon cookware, pots and pans, baking sheets, colander, etc. There are even ladles, spatulas, and scissors...basically, all the little things that make staying here easy and like home.

Another GREAT thing about this place is the stackable washer and dryer. PERFECT for washing your things after hitting the beach.

The two bathrooms are also very modern, with Kohler fixtures, granite counters, nice cabinets, great tilework, and upper-end finishes. They definitely have a resort feel to them.

The air conditioning in this unit is super efficient and super effective. Easy to control and takes effect immediately. A blessing on hot days.

The bedroom is good sized, with all matching, modern furniture, with a nice, dark wood sleigh bed.

The rest of the unit has a small, raised bar with 3 bar stools; small, tall glass table with 4 chairs, and a living area with a large couch and loveseat and small flat-screen TV. The cable set-up offers about 50+ channels, and there is a DVD player as well. Recessed lighting and tray ceiling make the place feel very contemporary.

As for 17B’s location on the property overall, we found ourselves VERY fortunate. It took us about 60 seconds to walk to the club house, which is situated on the lava bluffs overlooking the ocean.

Overall, my wife and I were VERY PLEASED with both the resort and the unit.

Now, as promised, I’d like to address the “terrible” complaint this unit got. My wife and I had such a good time, we were curious about reading some of the reviews it got (after having the first-hand experience). We weren’t surprised about the terrible reviews...there’s no pleasing some people. We’ve never written our own review before, and weren’t interested starting any time soon. BUT, when my wife noticed that we stayed in the exact same unit as one of the “terrible” reviews, we felt compelled to rebut!

First, as of writing this, there are 124 reviews about this site. 114 are “good” or “excellent,” only 3 are “terrible.” It just shows you, you can’t please all of the people all of the time, and, as I said before, there’s no pleasing some people (more about that later too).

Second, the reviewer complained about the carpet. I’ll give them that one. It was pretty spotty, but what can you expect when everyone and their sister is going to the beach every day, and they’re treating it like a rental? I didn’t even notice the spots until day 2, so they’re not that big of deal. It’s not like it’s your house, and you’ll probably being going to the beach too, so you won’t feel so worried about tracking a little sand in.

Third, the reviewer complained about the view. If they wanted an ocean-front view, why didn’t they pay for one? My wife and I were stoked to be so close to the club house and ocean view!

Fourth, the reviewer complained about the pool being small, smaller than the ones at the nearby Hilton and Marriott. True, but again, if you wanted bigger, why didn’t you pay for bigger and stay there? Probaby because you’d be staying in a hotel, not something that’s more along the lines of a vacation condo. I found the pool at Hali’i Kai more engaging and cool design-wise, and LESS CROWDED because there aren’t 1,0000+ staying at the resort. We visted the hotels nearby just to site-see, and the pools were PACKED. When we went to the pool at Hali’i Kai, there were only a handful of people there.

Fifth, the reviewer complained about having only 1 security card for the pool, so it was problematic getting in when their spouse went at an earlier time. My response is, why does your spouse want to get away from you so bad? Could it be your negative personality??? Anyway, we had two cards, so problem solved.

Sixth (God, this person complains a lot), the reviewer complained about the lack of daily services (taking out the trash, new towels, etc.). The service crew did come 1 every 4 days, which was enough for us. My wife and I HATE when the cleaning crew comes around knocking on the door in the morning when we’re still asleep or in our PJs. We were fine with using the towels provided (there were lots...remember, TWO bathrooms), and the trash dumpster was about a 30-second walk from 17B. I guess that’s a long walk and a lot to do for some people. Maybe the reviewer should bring their housekeeper with them next time?

Anyway, to sum up, my wife and I were quite surprised to find someone had a problem with the particular unit we stayed in, and noticed that the complaints they had were very trivial; so trivial, in fact, as to make it appear the person complaining is the type of person who is NEVER satisfied.

You know, someone who walks into a room and says, “...but the lights have incandescent bulbs, not compact fluorescent.” But if there was compact fluorescent, they’d say, “...but they’re not LEDs.” And if they had LEDs, they’d say, “...but I can’t dim them.”

Some people are PERPETUAL MARTYRS who will NEVER be satisfied; the grass is always greener someplace else, they’ll always something to complain about, and their spouse will always want to escape them for the pool.

We stayed in room 9A for 2 nights. I had read another review that commented on the carpeting in the unit and I AGREE...it needs to be cleaned!!! I mentioned it upon check out so hopefully it is tended to. That aside, this is a nice 2 bedroom 2 bath unit with a view of both the ocean and the golf course and walking sitance to the very nice pool area. THe resort charges a $40 resort fee for use of the amenities which for a two night stay was kind of a waste for us. Kitchen was a bit light on quality pans, silverware etc. Dishes in cabinets needed to be rewashed before use as many were dirty. Groceries at Queen's Market Place were outrageously priced. Shop in Waimea or Kailua-Kona (they have a Costco) first if you plan to cook. Located right next to the HIlton....

Room Tip: Ask to be as close to pool as possible if you are booking a premium ocean view.

Our travel agent booked this for us so we didn't know what to expect. It's beautiful without a doubt. Its just that we had wanted beach access at all the places we stayed. This one has none. You can take a long walk or drive to the beach near the Marriott, but only lava rock here. LOVE the pool side restaurant. Great food at competitive prices. Sapphire was so friendly!

Be aware however: the pool bottom is black and there are some underwater rock walls that separate different parts of the pool and they blend in. Right after arriving for the first time, two of my kids slammed their heads into them while swimming underwater. You can't see the walls and after dark they are especially hidden. My son still has a lump on his head a bruise on his shoulder.

This is probably more than we needed for three nights. Better suited for long stays, especially great for large family gatherings. Very, very quiet community. Even the pool was so quiet. My kids even asked if they could PLAY in the pool. They did, but more subdued than usual. The pool is stunning and has unbelievable sunsets. Made it all worth it. Wow.

We had a lovely stay at the Halii Kai - our ground floor villa was spacious and clean, and the setting (especially around the pool and barside grill) is beautiful. It was very quiet on each of the 4 nights that we stayed, and during the day.
However, be sure to check in at Reception when you arrive, even if you book through an internet booking site and they email you all the confirmation numbers and details that you need to access your villa.
We booked through HotelClub who sent me an email containing all the access codes required to enter the front gate and the villa. We arrived after the advised check-in time (3pm) and went straight to our villa. This seemed like a logical and fair thing to do as we had been sent all the access codes and there was no obvious reception or check-in office after you enter the front gates (rather, it is located off to the left-hand side of the front of the resort behind a garden and is not well signposted).
When we entered our villa there was dirty linen in piles all over the place and it had not yet been vacuumed or cleaned.
We sought out Reception and, once we found it (as mentioned above, it is not obvious), we were advised that we should not have gone directly to the villa (despite having been given all the information necessary to do so, and despite us arriving at least one hour after the check-in time). You have to wonder why they send out all the information to enable people to enter the villas directly if they don't want you to do so!!
So beware - go to Reception before you check in!!
Also, the villas are not serviced daily so you will need to stock up on toilet paper and soap, etc. I thought it was quite strange that no soap was provided in our villa, yet they did provide 1 small complimentary tube each of conditioning shampoo and body lotion.
Apart from the above, we enjoyed our stay very much.

Met and even exceeded expectations. Entire property seems brand new. Granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, tile everywhere. Unit was nice furnished and well-equipped. Great balcony overlooking golf course and out to ocean. Very quiet. Great location. Great pool. Perfect for a family and no comparison to being in a two bed single hotel room with one bathroom. Gated and not much traffic at all. Convenient to Kings and Queens Shops. Beautiful gounds. Easy parking. Washer and dryer which was very convenient. Property will even provide laundry detergent as well as other household items.

Room Tip: Stayed in upstairs Unit 7D -- 2BR, 2BA.

Great Property...but ONLY if you book an upper floor unit! We stayed in a beautiful 3BR ground floor ocean-front unit right below a LOUD HEAVY FOOTED party...and party they did....until 1 AM every night on the lanai, and then lead-feet pounding the ceiling above us around the clock. Literally rattled the light fixtures in our master. Couldn't enjoy the peaceful evenings on the lanai, and couldn't sleep at night. Ruined our stay. A shame really, as ocean-front condos this nice are few and far between on the Kohala coast. Stay upstairs, and you'll love it.
