“Peter Merriman needs to pay attention to this cafe”
Reviewed May 11, 2006

We've eaten at Merriman's restaurant twice and loved it so we were anxious to try the cafe. We ordered the hummus and red pepper dips with "house made pita chips". The dips were good but the pita chips were glistening with grease and unevenly cooked. Some were crispy and others were chewy and they were stone cold - obviously they had been cooked well in advanced. We both had the short ribs and were served 1 short rib that was stringy and a little too chewy. A huge disappointment - never again.

“Favorite Casual Spot”
Reviewed March 28, 2006

First, a clarification - please see other reviews to verify. Trip Advisor links you to Merriman's (the fancy parent restaurant) and this is Merriman's Market Cafe (more casual and less expensive).

Regardless, we stumbled onto this place looking for places to eat other than the Hapuna Prince resort. We fell in LOVE with it. It is a perfect place for casual meals. The simplicity is what makes the place so wonderful. Great fresh food with mediteranean flair, extensive wine list for such a small place and reasonable priced by Hawaii standards.

We are going back to the big island next year with a group of friends. I can't wait to book a big table and share the experience with them.

It is a place not to miss.

“Never again”
Reviewed November 13, 2005

We were really excited about eating at this place given all that we heard. When we got there, the hostess was very rude and the waiter was rude too! They did not seem to care about how they were treating us and made us feel like we were bothering them. Cannot even say how good the food was because we never got that far, we left. Went to another restaurant called Roys and had a wonderful experience, food was great!!

“Merrimans Market Cafe is Very Good (and not the same as Merriman's)”
Reviewed October 27, 2005

We stayed at the Waikoloa Hilton and Marriott in September, and found ourselves at Merriman's Market Cafe many times.

Since there's some confusion in the reviews of Merriman's (in Kamuela) let me clarify. Merriman's Market Cafe is in the King's Shops in Waikoloa. Merriman's restaurant is in Waimea (Kamuela). I think they share a common owner, and I know they share a great jazz trio (we enjoyed them at both restaurants).

Merriman's Market Cafe has a more limited menu and is less expensive than Merriman's. And the food is very good, but a cut below the amazing food at Merriman's. The market cafe is just a short walk from the Marriott and a long walk/short drive from the Hilton, so it's very convenient. It has a nice outdoor patio as well as indoor seating.

One of the best food values around is the Market Cafe's bar menu, which is served before 6 pm. It's relatively inexpensive and very good food.

“Flat out outstanding......best on the Big Island”
Reviewed July 31, 2005

Merrimans Market cafe in the Kings is a stunning bistro to the flag-ship in Waimea..... reasonable prices for 2 under 100 with wine, 3 course tax and tip.
Greek- Morocco....flavors .. not dull Italian tomato garlic stuff.....everything was not just good but outstanding.......

Service was smooth, polite and helpful...... atmosphere was casual and relaxing....... no pomp....just performance........I am local and cant wait to go back........ what a breath of fresh air......forget Roys.....
