Since we have been big fans of the original Merriman's in Waimea, we looked forward to visiting this new venture on our recent trip to the Big Island. The decor was nothing special, but did fit the bistro type atmosphere. The place was not filled, but the service was slow nonetheless. It looked like our waitress was assigned too many tables to take care of and we were lost in the midst of tables that seated larger parties. My husband ordered the catch of the day grilled with the italian mushroom pasta and I ordered the braised beef. We received our dinners in a reasonable time period, but that was the last we saw of our waitress. Unfortunately, my husband's fish wasn't that fresh- I could smell it from across the table and it tasted the way it smelled. Nonetheless, he loved his mushroom pasta and I enjoyed my beef dish with pasta as well, altough there was just a ton of pasta which I could not finish. After we were both finished, we finally got the attention of the manager to tell him about the fish. Although he insisted the fish was fresh, he offered to take it off the bill. We urged him to leave the pasta on the bill and take off the fish, which my husband had not touched, but he said it was policy to take off the whole thing. He then asked if we had seen our waitress and we said we did not. It was a bit uncomfortable and when she did return, she was quite brusque and not very happy with us, making us feel bad, which is not what a night out is supposed to result in. So, I would probably try this restaurant again, but would hope for a nicer atmosphere .
