My husband and I had a great evening with fantastic food at Pueo's Osteria. Chef James is great. I first had his food 30 years ago in Stamford, CT. The food was great then and has only gotten better. The owners are out talking to customers and there was a great crowd on this Friday night. If you have a chance take the drive and visit this out of the way gem!

Pueo's was one of our favorite dining experiences while in Hawaii. The atmosphere is casual and inviting, with upholstered alcove banquets that let you sink into them like your favorite chair. The place was full, but we were easily able to talk with the sound level. Service was friendly, prompt, and not overly intrusive. We ordered the Penne alla Vodka, Chicken Milanese and Shrimp Positano, then shared all around. The Penne alla Vodka won the straw vote, though all the dishes were exceptional. The sauces were light, with beautifully complex mixtures of Italian and Hawaiian spices that inspired several "wow" comments. We tried all the desserts, not a slacker among them, and gobbled up every bite even though we were already stuffed from the ample entree portion sizes. The meal was definitely worth the 8 mile drive up the hill to Waikoloa Village from the Waikoloa Resort. We talked fondly about the experience all week.

The night we were there, they were celebrating their 6-month anniversary. It's owned by a chef who had been at the Four Seasons. Everything tasted extremely fresh and delicious. It's located in the Waikoloa Village shopping center…only a 6-minute drive up-mountain from the expensive Waikoloa Resort area. We loved the bruschetta ($7) with great local tomatoes, the walnuts & gorgonzola salad ($12) with greens that seemed like they'd been picked about 3 minutes before we got there, and the chicken milanese ($17). As you can see, the prices are far below what you'd pay in any of the resort areas. The atmosphere is nice; nothing fancy. It's not your typical Italian restaurant, so it's worth a visit even though you're in Hawaii. It got a little busy (and service got a little slow) with what seemed to be the neighborhood upscale condo crowd. They seemed to know each other, and were obviously regular customers…which is always a good sign of a great restaurant. We were delighted to discover this place, and definitely plan on returning. They're only open for dinner, but have a Sunday brunch.

If you haven't tried is yet, Pueo's Osteria is simply one of the best places on the west side of the big island. Delicious creative menu, great service all at a very reasonable price. Love the caesar salad, all the pasta dishes are excellent and the wild boar special is succulent, it melts in your mouth!

This restaurant was recommened to us by a local. I had one of the specials of the day the Wild Board ragu over homemade pasta, needless to say it was excellent. I would definetly go back here.
