We came here to watch the sunset and it was unforgettable. Go behind the fish pond and you can see the sunset reflection in the pond and get some great pictures. It also has a nice path you can walk on and lots of friendly cats.

This beach is behind the Mariott. The sand is a wreck - they have built huge berms. This is not a nice beach to sit in the sand. Not good for picnics or spalshing.

This beach is however protected from the waves by the bay - making it great for swimming (although let's get real - it's the ocean - there are things that will kill you in it and stuff you better understand (rip currents)). IF IN DOUBT - DON'T GO OUT.

That being said - it's a great beach for swimming (as well as windsurfing).

I'm a big swimming - I love this beach for a swim.

Thank Pakse

What a disappointment. I heard from other postings that this was a great beach. That is not the case. The only purpose of this beach is for access to the massive Hilton Village and their seasport activities. The "beach" consisted of a half-moon shape area with about 5-10 feet of rocky sand all pushed up to 10-15 feet berm. There was no area down by the water to lay out. You had to position yourself on the berm. In the bay itself, no one was snorkeling and it didn't look like a good place to try it. To the left side there were some decent snorkeling areas and we saw two turtles from the shore. However, it was all black, sharp lava rocks which made entry/exit difficult. Go to Hapuna Beach (great sand/surf) or Spencer Beach (snorkeling) if you want a nice beach up on the northern area of the Kona side of the island, but don't waste your time at A Beach, like we did.

We enjoyed going here as it was quite close to our condo at Hali'i Kai in Waikoloa. If you are expecting white sands, though, this is not the place to go. Sea boots are recommended. You can also fish off the sea wall. Use octopus for bait.

Calm, walkable, turtles abound in and out of the water, some rocks/lava, lots of clean sand, bathrooms, Ocean Sports shack where you can eat and rent boards, snorkeling equipment, never crowded, lounges, in the best part of Kohala coast where it seldom rains.NICE!
