I spent 3 nights in the charming Africa Room at the Chalet Kilauea Inn. This room is small (says so right on the website so no misleading there) and perfect for a solo traveler. What I was not expecting was the rather large private lanai with fridge, microwave and coffee maker. An added bonus to this charming room! The bathroom was quite large, with a jetted tub, tiled floor and mirrored walls. I thought the water pressure was fine and it warmed up after just a little wait. The bed was comfortable and the soothing sounds of the rain and the birds was a great way to wake up each morning. The inn does have breakfast each morning for $6.25. There are bagels, English Muffins, fresh fruit, sweet bread, cereals and instant oatmeal. They also provide coffee, hot water for tea and a tropical juice. The inn is probably a mile or so off Hwy 11 and you need to watch carefully when first arriving as the sign comes up quickly. I arrived after hours and an envelope was waiting for me right next to the office door with my room key and directions on how to find it. This was very appreciated after a long day of flying from the mainland and being exhausted. Volcano Village itself is very small with limited meal options so don't come expecting fancy dining or tons of choices. The National Park is short drive south on Hwy 11 and I would highly recommend this hotel if you are planning to spend anytime at the park. Otherwise you have a half hour drive back to Hilo and who wants to do that after a long day exploring all Volcano National Park has to offer. Just return to your cozy room in the middle of the rainforest to relax!

Room Tip: The Africa Room is small but perfect for a solo traveler

Eclectic is my best description for the Chalet Kilauea. Wanting to stay one night near the National Park, I had absolutely no idea what to expect of the area or where we were staying. In my mind I imagined Volcano Village to be a small town area with a Main Street, ha was I wrong. You're in the rain forest and everything in spread out a bit. It's very dark at night, so suggest arriving in daylight if you can. It's much easier to find your way. We stayed in the Hapu'u Bungalow and my niece in the Treehouse Suite. Both were very unique, offered large bathrooms, small kitchen area with microwave & frig, flat panel tv's. Be prepared though, it gets cold there at night and there are only small space heaters to heat up your space, so it gets a bit chilly! Breakfast is not included in the room rate, but can be added for $6 per person. It consisted of mostly breads, pastries, fruit and cereal. There is limited dining in the area, so don't dawdle too late at night or you'll be left hungry. So back to my eclectic comment...the rooms contain a variety of items from modern/contemporary coupled with the outdoors. Just plain unique and interesting. But one night was enough for me.

The rooms are clean and great. There is a mini kitchen area with a microwave, refrigerator and coffeemaker. The bathroom is gorgeous with a huge shower. The grounds are gorgeous with lush tropical plants. I highly recommend this place for those who plan to visit the volcano area on Big Island.

My girlfriend and I stayed for 3 nights at the Chalet Kilauea in Volcano HI.
Great place super clean, great great rooms with small kitchen and the grounds are so nice.
Located near the park. Very friendly staff and really good breakfast. Real highend world class feel.

Room Tip: Garden Room

We arrived at the Garden room at the Inn at Volcano under the rain for two nights, and found it delightful. The unit has its private entrance and is very cosy. There is a small but spotless kitchen (although designed by somebody much taller than us...); a comfy bedroom and an equally spotless, very nice bathroom. The decoration is tasteful and the private lanai would have been awesome had it rained less. The inn is ideally located to explore the volcano national park. There is no restaurant on the premises but others are very close by, such as the Chalet Kilauea, where the waitress tipped us on volcano activity and we went back by night to the park to see the red glow.

This inn is a very good value for the price. There is also a common law equally tastefully decorated, and a public computer with free internet (although slow). If we went back to Volcano park, this is again where we would stay (in the same Garden room, which gives you some privacy).

Room Tip: The garden room is excellent value for the price; you get a private parking, private entrance and gr...

I like the fine things in life. I'm a boutique hotels type of person. But i loved staying here. It is so full of of character. The real Hawaii. Good value, a no frills place from which to get to Volcano Kilauea. I loved the location and the feel of the village. It had 'soul', a quality often lacking.

we stayed 3 nights in the continental room - first of all we were very pleased about this accomodation - room was very clean, big bathroom, small kitchen, friendly staff and a very nice surrounding area with free wifi, .....but....on the first day the shower broke and was not repaired within 3 days; the walls are thin like paper - you can hear people talking, watching tv, etc. all night long; the breakfast for $6,00 is nothing special (some bread, some cerials, some fruits); but all these things are not the worst: on our last day in the morning we prepaired our bags for the long flight home to europe an arranged our clothes and all this stuff - we spent the whole day at the volcano np. Back at the hotel we opened our bags and realized that some things were missing - and not the cheapest one (some zimtstern t-shirts and volcom t-shirts and a rusty belt) ; we reported this at the reception, but we did not get any help to clear this up - the only comment from the lady was: "I do not know what to say!"
Now, back in europe, they do not answer any of our emails - we are very disappointed!

We take reviews like this very seriously. Traveling can be confusing at times. Although the guest reported missing clothes, it is really hard to say how they disappeared. We are located in a very physically active hiking area with many trails and rest areas. Sometimes articles can be left behind accidentally on hiking trails, rental cars, lobbies, hot tub areas, etc.. All of our rooms are 100% secure with a double-locking system. In regards to noise, unfortunately, some travelers can be louder than we would prefer; realistically, this can happen anywhere. Although our structure is wooden, all guest rooms were constructed with QUAD walls. QUAD walls are double the thickness of average walls. Sometimes even QUAD or concrete walls cannot help with noise. The front desk does respond aptly to any noise concerns brought to their attention. Lastly, we do serve a continental breakfast; it is meant to be simple as it has been contoured over the years to suit most of our travelers. We understand that it may not suit every traveler. We offer the most inexpensive breakfast option within over 30 miles. It is, however, a continental breakfast. Most of our guests really enjoy the breakfast items we offer at such a low price.
