“A great place to stay”
Reviewed February 14, 2009

This is a great place to stay. Its right next to the National Park, you get your own house, and the grounds are wonderfully jungly. The current owners are extremely helpful and friendly, and full of good advice. I believe that they are trying to sell, but don't let that stop you coming here. The house can get cold; there is a heater, but we were not really expecting this in Hawaii. Its more a statement about our expectations, be we were glad of jumpers and waterproof jackets. The fresh fruit, fruit bread and coffee at every breakfast was delicious; and the bed was comfortable. The house included a good collection of books and games. There are 4 or 5 guest houses on the hide-away site, and you feel like you are living in the jungle. We were very glad to have found this place, and hope that it does not change.

  • Liked — The beautiful environment and having a house to ourselves
  • Disliked — It was colder than we thought it would be

We stayed two nights in the smallest Berry Cottage, for a great location just minutes from Volcanos National Park. We were pleasantly surprised at just how fantastic a natural setting the property has-- moss covered ancient trees line the driveway in, and you will wake to an amazing variety of colorful songbirds-- more in fact, than the "Bird Park" trail just outside Volcanos National Park. We never did enjoy the first-come, first-serve gazebo hot-tub, but this was a nice amenity to have. Like the Captain Cook area, Volcano has surprisingly good restaurants for such a tiny town. The local gourmet pizza and pasta place also does specials and non-Italian entrees at night-- we ate there twice in two days. The adjacent Thai restaurant is a little more pricey than you expect for Asian, but the quality totally matches, and is convenient for take-out back to the cabins.

The cabin doesn't look worn inside or out, but is built in a fairly rustic style. Likely completed as a skilled do-it-yourself job, expect clean, comfortable accomodations, but with a slightly rustic feel. Bathroom shower is quite a simple affair, and the bed is a smaller full size mattress rather than a queen. The other, larger cabins looked more substantial in construction, but we never saw the inside.

Breakfast was rather lacking for something labeled a B&B. I'd consider it more like a quaint private cabin with a delivered light continental breakfast thrown in. Orange juice, milk for coffee but no cereal, good fresh pineapple. The coffee, banana/zuchini bread and other fruit were nothing special. (Sadly the self-made coffee is not Kona coffee like our Capt. Cook B&B). Thus, expect breakfast to be rather simple and identical for each day. Very convenient, but not like the B&B breakfast you might expect on the mainland or perhaps elsewhere on the islands.

The owners were warm and very helpful with complex driving directions to the lava-viewing site, and for our scenic drive back to Kona airport via the wetter East side of the island. We also get it, though, and agree with, the quirky personality reputation mentioned in other reviews. The sheer number of rules and regs for the place is overdone-- both verbally and in the numerous signs in the room. The intro. tour was also too lengthy and detailed, going over all the complex instructions for the hot tub instead of just posting a sign there for those who use it. Likewise, we were given a somewhat lengthy tour of the orchid garden (while hungry for lunch) rather than simply pointing the path out and inviting us to explore at our leisure. This quirkiness didn't spoil our own visit-- we still give it 4 stars, especially given the fantastic location, reasonable price, and surprisingly good restaurants within a two block walk. We could easily return if visiting Volcanos NP again.

Aloha,
Thought we had better correct/explain some information this guest provided:
1. There is a queen size bed in the cottage (not a full size as they mention)
2. There are two rules posted in each house. a) please remove your shoes (Hawaiian custom) b) please wash the dishes (helps to keep the cottage clean and free of pests.)
3. We believe you would rather look at nature while in the hot tub vs look at rules posted on the wall.
4. We give a tour of the property to all our guests to help them feel more comfortable with their surroundings. We show them around their house and the office so they know how to contact us if need be. After a look at the hot tub, guests are on their own unless they indicate they would like to see the rest of the grounds.
5. The Ohelo Berry Cottage is a studio cottage. There is no way to do elaborate cooking so the breakfast is limited. There is more variety in the larger houses.

What more can we say……….
We stayed at the Ohia Forest Cottage and really enjoyed everything.
We just came back from our 4 weeks in Hawaii ( did 4 islands ) and stayed most of the time in b&b's. but the Volcano Country Cottages are so unique …..a real gem !
This is truly a masterpiece and not only the place, location, cottages ( felt like home and so clean ), surroundings, ( so peaceful and well main tenant )
even breakfast ( fresh made with such an eye for detail and care )
but also the owners are the most kind warm people you will ever find as your hosts.
We are so sorry we only could stay there for 3 days but as I wrote in there guest book, we will be back for a much longer visit.

Thank you so much, Sandy and Garrett, for making our first Hawaii vacation one we will never forget.

A big kiss from Belgium

This is maybe the nicest B&B you will ever stay at. We stayed in the Ohia House which is the newest house and most secluded. My wife and I stayed here on our honeymoon and had the time of our lives. The house was built in 2006, so everything is new, and it is set-up in a way that it feels like you are actually living in a jungle. The hosts were so personable and helpful. I would recommend this B&B to everyone!

We stayed at Volcano Country Cottages August 9-12, 2008. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon/evening, after spending a week in Maui for a friend's wedding. Given that we'd been there for the wedding and our friend had done a lot of planning for us, we had done nothing when we got to Volcano Country Cottages, other than figure out how to drive there from Kona. Well, all I have to say is that Garret and Sandy pretty much planned our trip for us! They were so helpful - they basically walked us through a map of Volcano National Park and what we should do, how long the hikes would take, when we should go, etc. They also kept us up to date on the lava flows during our stay, and gave restaurant recommendations, other sightseeing on other parts of the island, and were just really nice and hospitable! We stayed in the Ohelo Berry Cottage, which was just adorable! It has a little kitchenette where we made coffee and enjoyed our breakfast each morning, and there was a jacuzzi next door that we took advantage of almost every night. I can't say enough about this place - I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it others visiting the Volcano in Hawaii!

  • Liked — Sandy and Garret's advice and recommendations!
  • Disliked — There was only one little thing - the bathroom is directly across from the kitchen table. So if anyone does something in the bathroom that smells, it wafts directly over to the other person that is eating.

We have spent the most wonderful 2 nights (as part of our honeymoon) at the VCC, in the Ohelo Berry Cottage. The cottage was great and roomy, we loved using the outside jacuzzi and I have never met a more knowledgeable host than Garret! He spent so much time and effort in making sure we got the most of our stay! He gave us great tips and we managed to see everything we wanted!
If I was to pick one area of improvement though, it would only be the breakfast: the portions were a bit small and the same on both mornings.

We stayed in the Ohia Forest cottage, the most secluded unit at the end of a private lane, for three nights, and we were very happy with it. The breakfasts (a loaf of banana bread or similar, fresh fruit, excellent orange juice and coffee) were just fine, and we appreciated the convenience of having them on our own schedule. The loaf was more than we needed for breakfast, so we used part for an evening snack.

Garrett and Sandy were unobtrusive hosts, but very friendly, and they provided us with much helpful advice. This is a great "base camp" for exploring the VNP area - just a few minutes from the park gates, but a safe distance upwind of the fumes that are currently plaguing parts of the park. Another big plus is the presence of two very good restaurants (Thai Thai and Kiawe Kitchen), a very short walk from the cottages. The Lava Rock Cafe is also nearby - not in the same league as the other two, but okay for a quick bite. We should've made more use of our kitchenette, but the lure of Thai Thai was too strong after a busy day, and we ended up eating there all three nights!

The cottage itself was well-equipped (unless you're expecting stuff like television and telephones, which we were happy to do without) and comfortable, and this was easily the quietest sleeping place we encountered during our trip. The only significant source of noise was the dehumidifier, which we shut off before going to bed. A minor annoyance was the lack of Wi-Fi, but we could get our email fix by taking our little eeePC laptop and connecting while sitting in a work room near the front of the property.
