“Don't expect too much”
Reviewed July 8, 2012

We booked the Lokelani Room because we we looking for a cheap place to stay near the Volcanoes National Park. As you will discover Volcano village has very few places to stay and the prices are over the top. This hotel is really BnB and did the job (provided a bed) but nothing else. You don't get a lot for the money.

The check-in is in a different location, and if you come at night as we did, it is challenging to find (please make a bigger and brighter sign!). The room is in a house from the 20's in good condition and is clean and neat. But the room is very small, and nowhere to put clothes or luggage (no closet). I would not stay here for more than 1 or 2 nights! There is a living room shared with the other costumers and a small kitchen where you can make coffee and have you drinks and snacks refrigerated. But you must bring it all yourself, not even coffee is offered.

There is no privacy. Don't go here for a honey moon or for a romantic get-away. You can hear (and they can hear) everything you do around. The bathroom is shared, but is clean and well equipped; but expect that you may have to wait in line.

You can have breakfast at the check-in building for $6 and after checking the prices of the town I'd suggest you take the offer. It is a simple but good breakfast, similar to any Days Inn. My suggestion to management: include the breakfast in the room price.

Summary: too small rooms, no privacy, but clean and quiet.

We stayed here 7 nights while we hiked in the National Park. The room was small (we stayed in the Malia Room, but would have preferred the Nene Room) but nice for my wife and I. Housekeeping comes in every third day and does a great job. The common rooms, kitchen and dining areas are quite pretty.

Occasionally there are guests who like to spend time in the shared bathroom and this can require other guests to show patience. The water in the bathroom takes about 10 minutes to heat up so a shower is best planned, let the water run while you do other things, but the bathroom is large and clean.

We heard that there can be problems getting the keys if you don't come to the office in time, but this didn't happen for us. We came in late, the streets are poorly lit and marked, but we did find the office, got our envelope for late arrivals and found the property easily. I could see how, this being a rain forest area that in the dark and rain others have had problems finding it.

We saw some reviews that it was hard to speak to someone responsible but we didn't have this problem on our trip. At one point the house computer failed and I picked up the phone, called the property management folks and they were standing next to me about 10 minutes later. While the computer wasn't repaired while we were there we had great interactions with the staff, housekeeping and the office.

The price was right. The room was clean. The facility is very close to Volcano National Park and we had a great time.

Room Tip: Room was clean but small. Get there before the office closes if you can. We think the Nene room woul...

We stayed here for a weekend recently and I would recommend it to anyone travelling on a budget who can appreciate value accommodation of the highest quality. For the price or not, I doubt this chalet could be beaten. The setting is lovely, in the quiet and sparsely populated Volcano village nestled amongst a lot of lush greenery with only a handful of other houses nearby. You are literally by the entrance to Volcano National Park so you couldn’t do any better for location.

The house is very nice, an old 1912 build that retains its charm through the décor (some may say a bit dated). The effort that had gone into the communal areas and the rooms was obvious, and every part of it was very clean and tidy. The rooms were very small, but we didn’t mind at all. Shared bathrooms were of a good standard and always stocked and well maintained as was the kitchen area. The living area had books, TV, stereo, DVD player and there were two computers in all, there was also well working wi-fi throughout the house. A furnished kitchen was useful for when we cooked in and we always had enough room in the fridge for any bits we needed to store. We were a bit apprehensive about the shared facilities but it was never a problem for us (even though the chalet was full when we were there). Surprisingly the other guests were more self-keeping than we were, albeit friendly enough, so we came and went as we pleased at all times and in that respect it was just like a hotel. We opted for breakfast one morning and it was well worth the $6; cereal, toast, muffin, bagels, local breads, lots of nice fresh fruit and great Kona coffee. Heading out for breakfast via the main building was no bother, it’s just around the corner by car. Check in is here too along with useful computer rooms and printers. Checking in after hours was seamless too, with a key left and easy instructions.

We had a top floor room (Lokelani) as we thought it would avoid hearing too much of other guests from above, but given the nature of the house you can hear the floorboards creek and people on the stairs next to us or in the bathroom. For this reason I almost didn't give five stars, because I don’t want to mislead people that they’d have a ‘flawless’ stay per say. If you are a light sleeper or are not at all comfortable with B&B style shared accommodation, the thin walls may bother you as you are aware of people’s movements. You do get used to it though and we didn't find it too much of a nuisance.

In all this is a travellers delight. If you need hotel style pampering and can’t take even a hint of rustic, despite being out enjoying the activities of VNP all day long, then maybe think again. For anyone needing top class budget accommodation for their volcano adventure, this is it.

Room Tip: Perhaps bottom floor may be best, seemed that only two rooms shared a bathroom down there rather tha...

the good:
- close to the park entrance, less than three miles away. good for exploring the park early in the morning before the crowds show up.
- quiet location, quiet neighborhood.
- close to several restaruants and a couple of convenient stores. all of them close rather early. before 9pm if i remember right.
- living room, bedrooms, shared baths seem to be well maintained and kept clean. this house is built in early 1900's. it has 6 bedrooms in three floors, one living room, one kitchen with cooktops, pots, pans and utensils, and two shared bathrooms.
- unique experience if other guests are nice and tidy. all other guests we ran into were great during our two night stay.
- breakfast is offered at the front desk area for a fee. we didn't try, can't comment.

the bad:
- small old rooms with small beds. double beds are more like full size, definitely not queen size.
- shared bathrooms, a bit noisy in the middle of the night when being used (we had the bedroom right next to the living room), a bit congested in the morning. rooms with a private bathroom are available for more $$, of course.
- front desk is a short drive away and closes before 5pm. if you arrive after 5pm you have to make a special arrangement.

overall, this isn't your typital hotel experience because it's a real single family house shared by different guests. if you are strict about having all the amenities of a hotel. this isn't likely a good deal for you. otherwise, this is a great place to spend a few nights for exploration!

p.s. if your main goal is to explore the volcano park, stay close to the park. hilo is also a short drive away, but it's more than 20 miles away.

Room Tip: upstair bedrooms are better, in my mind, for less noise. we didn't get one.

We are here for our 4th visit, and love this simple farmhouse built in 1912. There is a big common living room with internet and a wood stove if nights get chilly, and a full kitchen and nice tables and chairs if you want to cook and/or eat in. The rooms are small and the 2 baths are shared among the six bedrooms. It is serviced by the Chalet Kilauea group, which cleans, changes towels, etc. daily. We have always met interesting people coming and going here, but have never felt our privacy intruded upon. Everyone has been courteous and quiet. Since our last visit in 2007, the house has been redecorated and new furniture added, which makes it even more pleasant. If you like full-service hotels you probably won't be happy here, but we wouldn't stay anywhere else in this very interesting location. (There are two bedrooms upstairs with a bath, one off the living room, and two downstairs. We prefer upstairs, and my last choice would be the room off the living room, because there are no baths on that level.) There has never been a full house on any of our visits, and people spend most of their time at the volcano, so it has never seemed crowded.

At first we were quite surprised at how small our room was but in the end, its size didnt affect us or our stay. (They have larger rooms if you're concerned about room size). Common spaces were comfortable & had dehumidifiers which were needed the time we were there. (our towels didnt dry in our room over the 3 days we were there bc of humidity) A full kitchen is available for use along with a fireplace with logs for guest use. Having free wifi was great for us to find hiking trails in the Volcano area & make reservations for our tours online for our upcoming Kona & Hilo visits. My only suggestion would be to include complimentary coffee for guests. Its available for purchase at checkin desk but then we also had to buy milk and sugar ourselves at the corner store- a bit inconvenient.
