“Sweet place to stay at Volcano”
Reviewed June 17, 2013

There are two places you can stay at Volcano where you can have dinner served to you, and walk to your room. Kilauea Lodge has distinction. The restaurant is one of the best on the island, a place that can stand up in a world class array. The lodging is more like a home than a hotel. Comfortable beds with good linens. Although the lodge has the patina of age, the bathroom of our room was updated and yet still fit with the rest of the rooms. The lodge exudes a sense of place, of Volcano, Hawaii, and that is a bonus when staying somewher exotic.

Our room had a small kitchen, but we did not use it as the lodge dining was right at hand. Breakfast is included in the room charge.

The grounds are inviting, and large.

Although more costly than the usual bed and breakfast, the experience is more than a cut above. Prices are comparable with the newly renovated Volcano House inside the park, but the rooms are far more pleasant. There is that welcome feeling of home at Kilauea Lodge. When you think of Hawaii, chances are you think of aloha. Maybe aloha conjures up images of island girls with hibiscus pinned in their hair handing out lei. For those of us who call this island home, aloha is the interested courtesy and warmth extended to all. Everyone we encountered at Kilauea Lodge from the owners on through every staff person offered full on aloha. This made our stay more like visiting really good friends.

Pros:
- Very clean and comfortable rooms.
- Rooms are beautifully furnished and decorated.
- Friendly and hard-working staff.
- Memorable free, full, gourmet breakfast.
- Our room had an attractive working gas fireplace.
- This historic lodge is located in a rainforest setting with beautiful grounds that could rival many botanical gardens.
- Property is in a very quiet area located about a mile from the National Park entrance.
- The lodge has a top-notch restaurant.
- Although you’ll hear rain falling on the roof, noise transmission between rooms is minimal, and there is no street noise.
- Each room has free wi-fi.
- Bottled water and coffee makers in the room.
- A large umbrella is thoughtfully provided (this is a rainforest!)

Cons:
- Our room was equipped with a smoke detector model that I was familiar with, however, I could not see any signs of a carbon monoxide detector in the room. The gas fireplace worked fine and was used in the morning to take the chill out of the room. If you are choosing to visit during one of the cooler months and would plan on taking advantage of this nice source of heat while sleeping, I would verify with the management that they have a CO detector in each room that has a fireplace. If not, this is too beautiful a venue to pass up- I would purchase a small CO detector and bring it with me!
- The bedding provided looked to be new and of high quality. This included a mattress protector which also appeared to be high quality. Unfortunately, the protector had a rubberized lining which prevents the mattress from “breathing”, and this can overheat a sleeper and cause a less than desirable night’s sleep.
- Although our room was beautiful, its odd shape and the fact that the fireplace took up a lot of room made it difficult to place our three suitcases conveniently.
- The lighting provided by the pretty lamps was insufficient for comfortable reading.
- There was no TV or radio in the room (for me, this is not a “con”!).
- Our windows were equipped with small café-style shutters and a couple of shades. The shades were not “room darkening” and the shutters were difficult to keep closed tightly. The shades in our room allowed persons outside to see into the room at night if the light was on.

This was the perfect place to stay for a visit to VNP. Our room was exquisitely furnished, with plenty of room and extras such as umbrellas and area information provided.

The restaurant was very busy, which suggested it is the best in the area, which would not surprise, as we found the food to be very good, and reasonably priced.

Our only regret was not staying longer.

The Lodge is small and charming and we had a great stay. It exceeded my expectations!

Room-We stayed in the honeymoon deluxe room and I was pleasantly surprised. It was on the second floor and had a comfortable king size bed, a fireplace, a nice shower, and a private balcony with a beautiful view of the rainforest. We are very hot natured and did not use the fireplace or heater. But we did not need air conditioning either.

Food- We had the breakfast included with the room and it was quite good. They had a special menu for guests, but you could also order off their full menu for an additional cost. I thought their free offerings were great. We also had dinner here one night and it was delicious and well priced compared to other restaurants we visited on the island.

We loved the Lodge's proximity to the national park. It was a short, easy trip at night to view the glow of the volcano, and this probably would not have been an option for us if we didn't stay in this area. I also enjoyed being surrounded by the rainforest here.

We'll definitely stay here the next time we visit the Big Island.

The Kilauea Lodge has rooms at the main lodge and then separate rentals of houses near the lodge. We rented the Ola'a Plantation House and were really pleased with our choice. The living room was enormous with a nice gas fireplace. The house is either renovated (like the bathroom) or nicely maintained with historic charm. When booking I could not find many pictures of the interior so I posted a lot of photos.

Our only complaint is that there is no central heating so you have to use the fireplace and electric heaters - which are numerous. We did not feel comfortable leaving these on while we slept and were freezing our first night! We left everything on the second night and were fine.

Breakfast at the main dining room is included in your rate. We also had dinner there, not many options around, but luckily thought the food was good and were pleased with all of our meals. The dining room is charmingly rustic and historic.

We really liked this property. It was a great location for touring the Volcanoe National Park. We stayed in a one bedroom cottage with two adults and two kids, ages 9 and 13. We were very impressed at the start of our stay - the food was good, the decor was simple and clean in the cottage - comfortable beds. However, we were disappointed the morning we were leaving that the water was not working for showers/sinks and that the hot tub seemed to have a strange smell and was unusable. We were looking forward to hot tub and showers after the long hike the day before.

We wrote the owners and learned that there was an issue with their water pump that they had to repair. They have since also decided to purchase spare water pumps to keep for exactly this type of emergency.

The really best part was that they made this right by giving us a partial credit to our bill. We did really appreciate this kind of customer service and were glad that they responded in such a way.
