“Great location near the Volcano National Park”
Reviewed February 5, 2011

This bed and breakfast is in great location, just a few miles from the Volcano National Park and the volcano village for restaurants a block off the highway. The room was very clean, great towels and bed linens. There was a coffee maker , microwave, frig, baskets of tea and coffee , basket of oatmeal and ramon noodles in the room. Our hostess baked fresh banana muffins for us for our breakfast. On the property they have a hot tub, it was really nice sitting in the hot tub at 10pm in the rainforest after a long day of hiking. If you are a adventure person this property has it owns cave, lava tube to explore at no additional cost. make sure you bring old shoes and jeans and shirts.

This "bed & breakfast" is really off the beaten path. In fact, my GPS unit had told me I had arrived, and I STILL had difficulty finding the place. It's not visible from the main "road" which is little more than a paved jungle path. Although it's not far from Volcanos National Park, there is little else to see or do here.

We were looking for a place to stay overnight for our trip to the Volcano Nat'l Park and this place met our requirements - very close to the park (10 min), not too expensive. As we drove down the road to the lodge, we could smell the scent of "some Kona Gold - if you know what I mean - the house next door looked like it was occupied by locals who were having a Saturday night party. We checked in at 6 p.m. to drop off our luggage and Shannon met us and showed us our room (she said they were upgrading us to room 2 I believe since they had no other guests that night) and gave us flashlights as we were headed out to the end of road 130 to see if there was a chance to see any lava flow. We barely arrived and headed out, then returned late (after 11 p.m.). The only way to describe the room was adequate, it was nothing special, it was clean and comfortable (think of it like a spare room in your own house). She showed us the hot tub, but it didn't look very clean. The only thing that really bothered us was the musty odor of the room, but I think that was due to the location, it is located in a forested area and everything is much cooler and stays damp naturally. Definately could use newer sheets and for sure pillows. There were also lots of gnats flying around the kitchen area which were likely due to the moisture or perhaps a plant - just not a pleasant find in your hotel room. We didn't go into their lava tube so can't comment on it. It was fine for the one night we were there.

My husband and I wanted to stay the night in Volcano so that we would not rush out trip to the volcano park. It was worth it. Aloha Crater Lodge was the perfect spot for trip. It is a funky family run place. We were in late and out early, but the family accommodated us nicely. We had a large room, private bath, and satellite TV. The overnight stay near the park is worth it. We went to the volcano park at night to see the crater glowing and the best night sky. It was incredible.

We had a very comfortable stay. The bed is heaven and we had the best sleep we've ever had in a long time! Our room included a private jacuzzi. We were brought Shannon,s fresh baked bread which was delicious! Dan and Shannon are very gracious hosts and we plan to visit again.

This place is a real Gem! We went there with my family (took 3 rooms and we all loved it!!). The owners made us feel soo welcome and were super sweet and helpful. They also gave us reccomendations for the Volcano National Park + took us on an amazing tour of a Lava Tube in thier backyard!
Definately an experiense for anyone travelling in the volcano area.
The only thing i would have liked slightly better is newer sheets & towels

The Aloha Crater Lodge in Volcano is a delightful place. The owners, Dan and Shannon, were welcoming and helpful, especially with tips about the park. Shannon kept us supplied with fresh fruits and her homebaked coconut bread, and the room was wonderfully comfortable and warm (it's chilly here, even in June).

Two outstanding features: 1) the place is ideally situated less than two miles from the entry to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, an endlessly fascinating spot; and 2) the grounds of the lodge are amazing...you're in the middle of a rain forest, with gorgeous vegetation and bird life around. It feels utterly isolated, but in fact is surrounded by other such spots, equally hidden. They even have their own lava tube in the front of the property!
