Aloha Crater Lodge
Ranked #15 of 32 Volcano B&B and Inns
Reviewed April 13, 2010

Humid, dogs sreaming, access is difficult

Nothing is missing: towels, shower, dryer, coffee and coffee pot, fridge, shampoo and soap. It is basic: it takes more than a bed and a breakfast to be called a 'B&B'. It was really rustic. The hot tub is kind of filty. All lodges in that areas are rustic. It is near the Volcano Park.

Aloha Crater Lodge looked like the ideal place to stay to explore the Volcanoes Park area, and we found it more than adequate. Shannon's homemade banana/coconut/pineapple muffins/bread are indeed delicious as others have said. The location is one mile from the park entrance, down a beautiful side road, and there is a hot tub, which is nice.
However, the first night we found powdered non-dairy creamer for our coffee in our room. When you are drinking delicious Hawaiian coffee, it kills me to use that stuff. Luckily when we asked for milk the second day, she brought us some, but it would have been nice if it had been in the fridge upon arrival. Next, I know I am picky, but we were given yogurts from Safeway. As someone who tries to eat only unprocessed, whole foods, I was dismayed to see how many non-yogurt ingredients were listed in this small container of so-called yogurt, including food coloring. A lot is riding on a B&B breakfast, so I would have preferred real milk and yogurt.
Last, if you are not a Christian, you may not want to stay here. Biblical quotes from the new testament were placed in at least two very prominent places in our room. If the owners truly want to make all people feel welcome in their B&B, this is not the way to do it. As a non-Christian, this made me rather uncomfortable.

We stayed for one night to visit the park. I recommend dropping off luggage on the way into the park so you know where it is since you'll probably return after dark. It's like one mile outside the park? Super close. The rooms were basic & clean. The owners have fresh baked goods in your room for breakfast. It's not fancy by any means but I would be surprised if anything in that area is. The city of Volcano has a post office & one general store, not much there. We stayed here for the convenience to the park since we were only on the Big Island one night; flew in/out of Hilo which was only like 30 minutes away. I would recommend this place to anyone going for a quick visit. I personally wasn't all that impressed by the park. Half of it was closed due to fumes and old lava gets boring after a while.

We only stayed for one night, but it was a great location for visiting Volcanoes National Park (about a 15 minute drive). We stayed in room 3, which was a great value for our family of 4. It was a tight fit with the furniture, and the bathroom was small, but we didn’t mind because we spent very little time in the room. There was a small covered porch with table and chairs outside the door to the unit. We enjoyed the homemade muffins, juice, cereal and fruit for breakfast. There were also some canned drinks in the fridge, and the hosts provided us with flashlights to help us go see the lava flowing at night. I wouldn’t want to try and find this place in the dark, because the road leading to it off the main highway is heavily laden with trees and vegetation. But then, that is because the lodge itself is in a lush, tropical setting. We don’t know if we will ever get back to Hawaii, but we would definitely consider staying here if we did. We didn’t have time to use the hot tub or see their lava tube, so we cannot comment on them.

After two days in Honolulu we couldn’t have found a better place to transition to island life. Loved the location and natural beauty of Volcano. Very close to the park and within walking distance of one main street in this town. Just don’t try to find this place after dark. It is very quiet and peaceful.

Between more offers regarding Volcano Natural Park we have chosen Aloha Crater Lodge and we didn't regret it. It was perfect stay for exploring Volcano's Natural Park, not far from museums and middle in the nature. There are more apartments in this loge, you can choose it on your own, 2 big apartments in the 1th floor, with doors directly to the garden. The ambiance of house and garden is so beautiful and magic that I could imagine to turn a fantasy movie there - cave directly in the proximity = garden (!), strange, rare plants, sweet smell of jungle plants etc etc.
When I saw the photos on the Lodge's website before booking, they promises much - and I can confirm - it is not overdrawn.
House is very interesting (, the apartments are arranged with this "something" special, that you will feel at home. And for your welcoming - fresh flowers, fruits, different kinds of bred.
The owner very helpful, but not insistent.
Enjoy like we did it.
This place will remain in our mind forever.

This is a great property in a very unique location. After spending several days in the Kona area, we drove to Volcano to experience the park. Shannon greeted us upon arrival and showed us around the grounds. Her homemade breads and muffins were delicious. The bed was really comfortable. It was only a 30 minute drive to Hilo, so getting to things wasn't really a problem. Besides, we were there to see the volcano, and this property is only a few minutes away from the entrance to the park. We were able to walk into Volcano Village, and grab dinner there. I highly recommend this B&B. Shannon and Dan are incredibly gracious and kind and are great at recommending things to go to in the area.
