We are back from two weeks on the Big Island and decided to rent a vehicle and do our "own thing" mostly. After two days in Kailua-Kona, we drove south seeing sights and knew from friends we needed to try to stay in Volcano if we could. Found Aloha Crater Lodge online and they did have a room available so we booked. Used GPS to find the spot or we would not have, likely.
Aloha Crater Lodge is secluded and quiet which we loved (being seniors). Owners Shannon and Dan are wonderfully kind and hospitable. We had juice, coffee, tea, cereal, tea cakes, milk, yogurt and fruit in our room. We were able to tour Volcanoes National Park at our leisure, visit art galleries and eat suppers at great restaurants nearby. The spot was so so quiet at night and we really enjoyed that!
Luckily we were able to stay a second night.
Our first morning, Dan toured us through part of Kazamura Lava Tube (cave entrance on their property). That far beat the Thurston Lava Tube as far as we are concerned! We went down a ladder into the cave and then experienced the awesome sights and sounds. What a bonus!
We also went up the tree house and used the hot tub on the property (hidden in the trees).
