This place is a gem! Four small cedar cabins connected by pathways and covered walkways are set like a constellation in well manicured tropical rainforest around the main lodge. The effect is not unlike staying in a rainforest tree house and is very unique! A perfect getaway place for two, but during our stay, families were enjoying the cabins as well. The cabins are well stocked with all the usual amenities, plus the various extras you might need for your explorations of nearby Hawaii Volcanos National Park.

We stayed in two of the rooms, Mauna Kea – which was our favorite, and Kilauea – which we also liked very much, especially for its proximity to the covered hot tub, which is set in a pavilion perched in the rainforest.

This is cooler country, but hostess Kay Lee provides warm Terrycloth robes and slippers for your comfort and each room has a gas fireplace both for mood and for extra warmth. Breakfasts were good with fresh fruit and a main dish stocked in the refrigerator to enjoy at your leisure. Fresh Kona coffee is also provided along with real cream. Yum!

We think you’ll find Kay to be a special delight. She’s very intelligent, well read and well traveled. This is her third career and she’s really done her homework on what makes a first rate B&B. The breakfasts were wonderful and there were always fresh fruit, nuts, and snack crackers available in the main lodge. (For extras points, ask Kay if you can crack a few pounds of fresh Macadamia nuts to help her out.) If you’re a bird watcher, you’ll be in heaven with a wide variety of birds both in the treetops and wandering through the underbrush.

We can see this place working well for family groups, blending privacy in the separate accommodations with pleasant areas for gathering together. In any event, we suggest booking early. This place is not to be missed!

Where to begin? An incredibly well crafted lodge, in the middle of a magificent rain forest, hosted by Ms. Kay Lee, who has considered every imaginable need one might have. The lodge is all glass with one way shades, allowing the beauty of the rain forest in, but privacy. A lovely, comforable, sturdy king size bed provides a great nights sleep after climbing out on the lava flows. The kitchen table is set and beautifully decorated. Kay provides fresh breakfasts with (Get this!) fresh coffee ground daily. Flat screen TVs, a DVD player with a library of DVDs (including many local DVDs of the volcano activity and lava flows), and (get this!) wireless broadband internet access, if you bring your laptop, which we do. This may sound silly, but I even asked Kay her brand of toilet tissue, as I am a fanatic about softness, and hers was the best ever. Kay also made first class dinner recommendations and how to go about insuring a table; the Kiluea Lodge was so good, we had dinner there both nights. And the price was quite reasonable. I could go on but why bother. You cannot do any better than this.

Volcano was stop number 3 on our 21st Wedding Anniversary tour of the Hawaiian Islands in February. Hands down this was the most romantic accomodation we stayed in the two weeks we were away. I thought WOW when I saw the website, well staying there was WOW. We were still saying WOW even after staying there a few nights. The lodge was the very first property I booked back in September last year, and when I couldn't get my original dates I changed all our plans to make sure we could stay there. This turned out to be a great decision and then some.
The overall property is Five Star+. The cabins are so well thought out and appointed. The breakfasts were brilliant. The hot tub fantastic. The gardens lush. The only thing that wasn't great was the bed (sorry to be negative). We tended to roll into the middle of the bed all night. This isn't meant to be critical, just truthful. We were very disappointed not to met Kay (the owner) who was away at the time. While this did not detract from the amazing time we had here, I think it would have been the cherry, on the icing, on the cake. The personal side of this type of accomodation is a big part of its charm.
We also located the Thai Thai restaurant which served up the best food we had had since leaving Australia. (our previous 5 nights was in Kauai were we found food a challenge) We spent a full day treking and bascially seeing as much as we could fit into a day. Kay has all the extras you need to help you explore.
I think it would be impossible to be disappointed staying here. Thank you to all the trippies (trip advisor reviewers) who came before me and with their words of wisdom that helped to shape a holiday we will never forget. Mahalo
