My wife and I were blown away by the hospitality and warmth of this inn that helped break up a week of camping on the Big Island. Kay has done a superb job creating a special atmosphere to relax and unwind. We loved the concept of bringing the breakfast food to the room the evening before so that the morning could be at our leisure. Too many little touches to name (heated towl racks, fresh Kona coffee in the room, great toiletries, and on and on...). If you are up for camping, make the trek to Halape beach from the National Park (Kay has the details). Its gorgeous (see photo). Don't bother with any other restaurants in town except Thai Thai...its exceptional.

This was the loveliest B&B we've ever stayed at. The "pods" that Kay has created are exquisite, the hot tub is perfect, and Kay is warm and welcoming. The hut also accommodated our 10 year old daughter in a comfortable futon. Speaking of beds, ours had an amazing high-tech pillow-top foam that provided us with our best night's sleep in Hawaii.

Volcano Village Lodge is not your typical B&B as it's more a spacious lodge with tremendous privacy. You stay in your own private cottage with your own bath and the finest of appointments. The lodges are rustic and luxurious at the same time. Very peaceful and quiet. The grounds are immaculate and maintained by a native Hawaiian who makes sure everything honors the land. Kay (the owner/manager) overlooks nothing, you are pampered and well looked after from before you even get there. The breakfasts were wonderful and you dine in your own kitchenette in your room, so you eat when you feel like it.

The lodge is just a couple miles from Volcano Natl Park and 30 minutes from the Hilo airport.

Without a doubt one of the finest places I've ever stayed and I plan to make this place one of the few I return to on a regular basis.

My father and I stayed in this beautiful lodge in October. We are still dreaming about the place. Kay's attention to details totally captivated us: the nutricious and mostly organic breakfast, many different kinds of beverages, fresh fruits, great towels and beddings, and on and on. Her knowledge about the parks and the island and her eagerness to help us get the most out of our short vacation in Volcano were truly touching.

Volcano Village Lodge's natural settings are beautifully enhanced by their zen gardeners. We saw them at work quietly in the mornings. Again, barely noticeable but perfect touches abound in the natural garden.

We are not really into cats, but one of the two cats in the lodges -- the fat one -- is the most serene and friendly cat we've seen. The other one is hardly ever seen. We've only heard about that one. Kay keeps them outdoors in a nice warm place so that people like us wouldn't have to deal with any cat stuff indoors. Kay said the cats came with the property and she didn't have the heart to give them away.

The lodge construction is another aspect of this place that amazed us. Its architectually stunning post and beam reveal all of the wood and details inside and out. You can hear the birds all the time but especially in the morning. We had the best sleep in a while. Because each lodge is separate from the others, you also get nearly total privacy. It's just you and the rain forest for the most part.

We look forward to another visit next year.

Beautiful place, though walls are thin. Lovely breakfast with wonderful service. Loved hearing all of the birds outside our room. Wish this place, which promotes conservationism, didn't have cats roaming free--seemed hypocritical.

i am tempted to keep our experience at VOLCANO VILLAGE LODGE to myself for fear of it becoming impossible to ever find
a reservation again!! my boyfriend and i spent 3 days there to
celebrate a milestone birthday and it will remain the most
memorable time of our lives....there isn't much i can add to all
the other glowing reviews, except that KAY and her staff of buddhist gardeners and her namaste yoga/assistant keep her
breathtaking retreat in topform 24/7...we felt transported to our
own personal Valhalla and will never forget her warmth and
the incredible experiences we had exploring lava flows in the
dark of night and spending time at one of the most beautiful places on this earth...mahalo nui loa to KAY for recharging our
senses and souls...ELLEN & BOB (maui)
