John and Induck really respected our privacy, yet were also very conscientious and hosted us wonderfully. I loved having the unique experience of a gorgeous bed and breakfast without having to necessarily interface with the other guests and hosts on a regular basis! The bed was divine, the room well-appointed, the fresh fruit impeccable and the overall experience wonderful!

Just got back from a week on the Big island, on advice from Trip Advisor, stayed in Volcano at least one night as opposed to trying to see the Volcano from a drive from Kona-Kilua. I think alot of the people that we met at the park had driven the 93 mile Southern route from Kona and were driving back that night. I would suggest if time permits defineatly stay at least one night in Volcano. The most popular is the Volcano House itself, just in-side the park, but look into the several B&B's that are in and around Volcano Village.

We stayed at The Lotus Garden Cottages, and our room was beautiful. The owner, Kim, has set themes for all the rooms (see web-site), ours was done in a classic Korean theme. The addition of Korean antiques and the opulent bedding was a real treat, especially since we had spent the previous four nights at the nice, but more utilitarian Sheraton on the Kona side. The room came with a small jacuzzi jetted bath/shower, an HD TV with full Oceanic digital cable package, a very comfortable bed, and decorations that made the room look like a display at the Met. Our room had a wrap around porch that looked into a patch of tropical forest. A light but filling breakfast was served on the porch ( I think properly called a lanai).

By staying in Volcano, we were able to take the longed more scenic Nothen route throught North Kohala, with a stop for lunch in Waimea ( Merriman's is open for lunch, Daniel Theibault's is not.... the food at Merriman's is excellent). We did the quicker drive around around the Crater when we first got there, the next morning we hiked the Kileua-Iki trail, went back to the B&B for a rest then headed out before sun fall on a long hike to see the lava flows off the Chain of Craters road. The hike is eventually without a trail, over lava beds, at night, and although it is only listed as 2.5 miles round trip, its a slow, up and down journey.

Being able to quickly drive back to the very comfortable, very welcoming tranquiity of the Lotus Garden was a greatly appreciated.

The next morning, we flew out of Hilo, easy drive to airport only @ 30 miles from Volcano.

Also note, the Village of Volcano, has two general stores, and a handful of adequate to good restaurants, but they all seem to close early @ 8:30-9:00

In short, stay in Volcano at least one night, and if possible strongly consider the Lotus Garden... beautiful, quaint, quite, efficent, very well managed by a gracious, non-intrusive hostess... although completely booked we never saw anyone else, except Kim the manager.

I am shocked to see the review about cobwebs and spiders because we thought Lotus Garden was one of the cleanest places we've ever stayed at. We spent two nights in the Aloha Moon cottage and it was not only clean and comfortable, but nicely decorated with fresh flowers and a lot of extra touches: a foot massager, DirectTV (go to Channel 800 for Hawaiian music), bottles of water to take on hikes, a fridge, an extremely comfortable bed, and a remote-control fireplace for some warmth on damper Volcano days or just incredible ambiance! The room has a loft with two beds; we didn't need them but we checked it out and it was adorable. The room was spotless, including the bathroom (which also has its own heater, thankfully!). There is a hairdryer (important), and we were able to borrow an iron and board from our host, Kim. She is a wonderful person. She checked us in efficiently, gave us a tour, told us about some local sights and recommended some restaurants. We hardly saw her, so she definitely respects your privacy, and that is appreciated. She delivers breakfast in the morning (7:30) and it was delicious fresh fruits, Kona coffee, fruit juices, and simple things like waffles and bagels and croissants. On the last day, everything was in bottles so it would be easy to take if we were pressed for time (nice touch). The property is immaculate and the gardens are gorgeous. You feel like you're in another world here, and it's very quiet. We loved it. We also liked the location, close to the little Volcano Village town center for restaurants and general store stuff, and close to the Volcano National Park. We would definitely stay here again.

Check-in was prompt and courteous. The room was just ok, though, mainly due to the amount of spider webs and actual spiders in the rafters and, in particular, the sleeping loft. My one daughter would not lie down until I got the huge spider that was in the window next to her bed. This is ironic, because we chose LGC due to the fun sleeping loft for my 2 daughters. We actually changed our accomodations form Tutu's Place at Kilauea Lodge to here as it was more Zen like. Big mistake. Breakfast served in the morning was frozen bagels, some fruit, etc. Again, just okay. The jacuzzi was luke warm and the temperature was not adjustable. For the money, there are better places to stay in Volcano.

The suites were just as advertised and we found our host to be very gracious and respectful of our privacy. We enjoyed the relative solitude surrounded by a very tastefully and artfully appointed room. When a slight dampness hit the room there was an electric-start fireplace to warm things up. Beds were very comfortable and it was great to have the availability of cable and a large screen t.v. Breakfast was lovely; included were fresh fruits, waffles/bagels, juices and coffee. For those who need more to eat I suggest finding a buffet.

For two adults the accomodations were more than large enough, but I am not sure that young children might not be a bit hard on the furnishings. The proximity to Volcano Park was great as with that much rain in the area you do not want to have to drive very far. Bottom line: we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would surely recommend the cottages to others.

Staying at the Lotus Garden Cottages for 2 nights, was a wonderful experience. It allowed us to spend more time visiting Volcano Park, in such a lovely location, before staying at a Hapuna hotel.

The cottages are quiet, and nicely decorated. There is a spa to relax in after hiking around the park. The breakfast is served on the lanai, outside your cottage.

The inn keepers will assist you with dinner ideas. We tried a Thai restaurant, named Thai Thai. It was amazing to find such a great restaurant in the little town of Volcano.

If you choose to visit Volcano, look into flying in or out of Hilo airport. It is a shorter, and easier drive to Volcano from Hilo.

Lotus Garden was absoultely the best place ever! Imagine being in a rainforest and waking up to birds chirping each morning. The first thing you see from your bed in the morning is the gorgeous rainforest surrounding you! Out of every window all you see is green and nature! Amazing place, great rooms and wonderful hosts. We found the hosts to be more than gracious with the privacy that they extended us, yet they were available when we had questions or requests...such as borrowing flashlights for night hiking at the lava flows. They were welcoming but never comprimised our privacy. We loved it here and we are sure that you will too. We can't wait to go again. Guaranteed that when we do, it will be to return to the Lotus Garden. Why mess with the unknown when we found the most perfect place. Room was gorgeous and very spacious. Clean and bright. Fresh flowers and overall great accomodations. Loved it, loved it, LOVED IT!
