“Loved this place”
Reviewed April 21, 2007

We stayed at the 2nd Street Volcano Inn for 3 nights in mid-April 2007. We are a family of four with two teenage sons. The room--actually half a house (Gecko)--was huge (to us, palatial!), very clean, comfortable, well-equipped, reasonably priced, and convenient to Volcanoes NP (entrance is maybe 3 miles away). Only 30 minutes from Hilo (but more if you are traveling to Hilo around 7-8 a.m. -- more traffic -- allow 45 minutes then). It rained the entire time we were there, a bit more even than is characteristic apparently, but we still enjoyed our stay because our room was so cozy and we liked being there! Heed the note in the directions they send you that it's hard to find the place in the dark. Bring your own soap & shampoo as others have advised; liquid doesn't come out that easily. Ron and Jeab are very nice.

Make sure when you are making reservations that you are talking or corresponding with the 2nd Street Volcano Inn -- another that goes by the same name on Old Volcano Rd. is not nearly as nice (just read the reviews).

Thank you to Ron and Jeab for a great stay. We will recommend you to anyone headed for Volcano!

Our family of 3 recently stayed at the Volcano Inn. All the other reviewers were right on. The rooms were clean. There was plenty of room. We were in the Gecko suite (bottom floor). There was a queen size bed and a twin in the bedroom. In addition, there was a day bed in the living room. We experienced everything the other reviewers wrote about. The liquid soap (thanks to the other reviewers, we brought our own soap and shampoo), the rain forest (mildew) smell, the tight parking and the geninue feeling of being in a rain forest. We ate at the Thai restaurant, which had good food, but was expensive. At about $120, you can't beat it.

We stayed here for 2 nights in January, 2007. We had originally booked and paid for the larger room as there were to be 3 of us. That changed to only 2, and the owners kindly offered ( without being asked ) to move us to the Nene Cottage and refund the difference. We appreciated this very much, and did stay in the Nene Cottage. It was very clean, private and comfortable. You feel like you are in the middle of a rainforest and miles from civilisation when you look out the large windows. The cottage contains one main room, with kitchenette, table and 2 chairs, bed and bathroom. The kitchenette is very small, with only a bar fridge, coffee maker and microwave. They also provide marked drinking water, 2 mugs and 2 glasses. The cottage is only small, but has everything 2 people really need, including heating and electric blankets. There is a TV with cable, and bedside clock radio and telephone. The room felt a little damp, but considering the location that is probably hard to avoid. It is only a short 2-3 mile drive to the Volcano Village, where the few restaurants are. It is fantastic value for money here, nothing fancy but clean and comfortable, and I would definitely recommend it. Make sure you follow the owners directions and arrive in daylight and you will have no difficulty finding it.

I had tried to book 3 nights at the hotel in Volcanoes National Park, but only 2 nights were available, so I booked the one night at the Volcano Inn on 2nd street. When the owner showed me the room, the first thing I said was "wow" and the second thing I said was "I wish I had booked a longer stay"! The Nene room is beautiful, built right into the rain forest, with a pair of HUGE corner windows that bring the rain forest into your room. A gorgeous setting, a beautiful room, and great value price. Forget the hotel in the park -- a huge let-down after staying here -- and stay at the 2nd Street Volcano Inn instead!

We stayed at the Volcano Inn on Jade and Second Street for 3 days in Sept 06. We thought it was a great value. It was newly built- The Nene-room with woodwork everywhere and beautiful cork floors. The bed was comfortable and the view out the double window was great -- ferns and anthriums (?) growning everywhere. It was like waking up in your own private forest. Opening the windows and letting the breeze blow through was the perfect compliment after a hot day at the park. It was clean, private, quiet and well-located for our visit to the Volcano Park. There was a close market and Thai restaurant which was fabulous.

There was a small fridge, microwave and coffee maker as well as some bottled water. The owner was installing the solar heated showers the day we were there. He was very friendly and I liked that they were conscious of energy. We would recommend it to anyone!!

"We stayed at the Volcano Inn on Second Street for a month in April of 2005, and look forward to staying there again during our next visit in 2007. We thought it was a great value; we like to stay in places which are simple, clean, private, quiet and well-located for our interests - and we’ll happily throw in friendly and attractive when we can afford it. The Volcano Inn was all of these things.

The cabin we rented was 1/2 of a duplex. There was an enormous double picture window in the corner that let us feel like we were in the rain forest from any part of the room. Rain falling on the roof lulled us to sleep at night.

The small fridge, microwave and coffee service enabled us to eat simple meals "at home," and there are also good restaurants in Volcano Village, Kea’au and Hilo.

The Volcano Art Center, in Volcano Village, offers short courses in great topics: Hula, Hawaiian Language, Slack Key guitar, writing, etc. Within just a few miles of the Volcano Inn we could be in the rain forest or desert, part of the way up Mauna Loa, hiking in Volcanoes National Park, at a bird sanctuary, or at a beach within a 1/2 – 1 hour drive.

As we came and went throughout the month, Ron and Jeab were friendly helpful when we had questions. We don’t know if Jeab does laundry for other folks; one day we came back to our cabin and discovered that Jeab had done our laundry! If you want simple accommodations that are a great value, we recommend the Volcano Inn."
