“Probably the best place to stay in Volcano, HI”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 10, 2008

We visited late May, 2008. Choices are very limited near Volcano, Island of Hawaii, HI. We only stayed one night as we planned a very tight schedule for our 4 islands tour, but once we arrived, we somewhat regretted that we had to leave so soon.

The cottages were actually built by the owner himself, who was a builder in his previous carrier. You can see the pride of craftsmanship and it was very clean and the surroundings are beautiful. The owner warmly welcomed us, and was very helpful when we asked him about the state park.

We paid little more than $100 for the studio style unit. He requested payment via Paypal when we booked! (We are from Canada and don't have USD cheques, so that made it very convenient for us.)

I would highly recommend you stay here if you are on a honeymoon. Me and my wife stayed here 1 night during our Hawaiian honeymoon. I wish we could have stayed there longer, but we had reservations near Kona that were non-canceleable.

This is a family owned enterprise, and you can see the attention to detail the owners show for the property. They even had flashlights for you to tour the volcanoes with.

Just to make sure there is no confusion, this is the "Inn" we stayed at because there seems to be some confusion about the 2 Volcano Inn's: http://www.volcanoinnhawaii.com/

BTW, their rates are extremely low for the Big Island.

  • Liked — The attention to detail and free internet
  • Disliked — The rainforest is unpredictable weather.

I stayed in the Nene cottage this week and enjoyed my stay. The price was right and the proximity to the park is excellent. As others have stated, the view from the large picture windows makes you feel like you are secluded in a jungle, and you are! Amenities included a small refrigerator and microwave so I could have breakfast in the room. Wifi made it easy to keep in touch with my laptop.

The queen size bed was comfortable and the towel warmer was a nice touch. I enjoyed my stay and would definitely return.

We stayed for 2 nights in what I had originally thought was going to be the Nene cottage, and LOOKED like the Nene cottage...but was called something else. I apologize for not making a better note of it.

It was an excellent, easy stay in one half of a duplex. The huge windows looked out into the middle of the rainforest, and the room was clean and comfortable. I especially liked the flooring. Free wireless internet access was definitely a plus!

We brought our own shampoo at the suggestion of other reviewers, but ended up using the provided supplies from the dispenser in the shower. Took a few pumps to get the right amount, but it worked fine. The heated towel racks were great for helping to dry things in the humid environment.

As others have mentioned, the location can't be beat. To be so close to the national park really is convenient, and the local restaurants and little market worked out great.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Volcano Inn for the excellent value and comfortable accomodations.

My husband and I spent three nights here in early May after spending time on the Kona side of the island.

When we arrived at the hotel, the owner informed us that we were being "upgraded" to the Gecko Cottage because he had to do some roof work on the upper rooms. We had specifically requested the Nene Cottage because we loved the idea of feeling like we were in a tree house in the rainforest. We were really looking forward to the big picture windows by the table. At the time of our reservation, the owner told us that he could not guarantee a specific room request because they "have to move people around as the schedule fills." That didn't make sense to me, but it was priced right so I didn't argue.

Oddly, even though the owner said he had to move us due to roof repairs, we never saw anyone making those repairs and there appeared to be others staying in the upstairs rooms.

The Gecko Cottage was nice and much larger than the Nene Cottage, but we were very disappointed with the views. The website advertises that the Gecko Cottage has "morning coffee with a view." Unfortunately, that view is of the parking lot. While sitting at the breakfast table, we actually had our neighbors (who were staying upstairs) walk by and wave to us. We had very little privacy unless we kept the curtains closed all the time. The other smaller kitchen window overlooks the owner's laundry room. I assume the laundry room was added and they just left the window there. Fortunately, the bedroom windows and the other family room windows did have views of the huge ferns and trees of the rainforest, but they still weren't the views we had hoped for when we reserved the upper cottage.

Other than the lack of views, the Gecko Cottage was fine, but nothing fancy. It was nothing fancy- it felt like we were staying at grandma's house. In many ways it reminded us of a little cottage in the mountains (think Gatlinburg, TN or to Poconos). The furniture is an odd mix of pieces that seem to have been the surplus from the owner's home. The bedroom had a Queen and a Twin bed (both of which were rather hard and uncomfortable) and there is a twin bed in the family room area. As other reviewers have mentioned, there is a slight musty odor throughout the cottage and we found that it felt quite humid. Even the sheets felt damp due to the humidity and our bath towels never seemed to dry.

Nice touches included electric blankets on the beds, a gas fireplace, and a TV and DVD player (with a few DVDs included).

The location of this hotel is fabulous if you're visiting the Volcanoes National Park. It was about a 5 minute drive to the park (it was wonderful to not have a long drive after a long day of hiking!). It is also very near the little town of Volcano. There are about 3 dining options in Volcano- we ate at the Kileaua Lodge and it was very good. If you don't like any of those options, you have to drive to Hilo (30-45 minutes away). If we had stayed more than 3 nights and had wanted to do more than just hike at Volcanoes National Park, I think we would have preferred a place in Hilo where there are more restaurants and stores. Volcano Inn is great if you want an affordable place close to the park, though.

  • Liked — The location near Volcanoes National Park
  • Disliked — Had a bit of a "budget" feel with mis-matched furniture, thin towels, etc.

We stayed at the 2nd Street Volcano Inn for 3 nights in mid-April 2007. We are a family of four with two teenage sons. The room--actually half a house (Gecko)--was huge (to us, palatial!), very clean, comfortable, well-equipped, reasonably priced, and convenient to Volcanoes NP (entrance is maybe 3 miles away). Only 30 minutes from Hilo (but more if you are traveling to Hilo around 7-8 a.m. -- more traffic -- allow 45 minutes then). It rained the entire time we were there, a bit more even than is characteristic apparently, but we still enjoyed our stay because our room was so cozy and we liked being there! Heed the note in the directions they send you that it's hard to find the place in the dark. Bring your own soap & shampoo as others have advised; liquid doesn't come out that easily. Ron and Jeab are very nice.

Make sure when you are making reservations that you are talking or corresponding with the 2nd Street Volcano Inn -- another that goes by the same name on Old Volcano Rd. is not nearly as nice (just read the reviews).

Thank you to Ron and Jeab for a great stay. We will recommend you to anyone headed for Volcano!

Our family of 3 recently stayed at the Volcano Inn. All the other reviewers were right on. The rooms were clean. There was plenty of room. We were in the Gecko suite (bottom floor). There was a queen size bed and a twin in the bedroom. In addition, there was a day bed in the living room. We experienced everything the other reviewers wrote about. The liquid soap (thanks to the other reviewers, we brought our own soap and shampoo), the rain forest (mildew) smell, the tight parking and the geninue feeling of being in a rain forest. We ate at the Thai restaurant, which had good food, but was expensive. At about $120, you can't beat it.
