“Home away from home”
Reviewed September 14, 2012

We loved our stay here. It really felt like a home away from home, with a warm cosy living room to come back to after our days of hiking or touring (and since it rains a lot around here, having a nice dry place to come back to is very welcome!) Every morning there was a delicious, home prepared continental breakfast waiting for us: fruit, breads/muffins, cereal, juice, coffee and tea. The hosts, Fritz and Kate were very helpful, with advice and tips to get the most out of our time, mainly leaving us to enjoy the peace and tranquility, but just a knock away if we needed anything - they got the balance just right. We stayed in the fern room, which technically has a shared bathroom, but since the other room was empty, we had the bathroom to ourselves too. The location is excellent to explore the National Park and surrounding areas from, and even though its nice and close to Volcano village, feels wonderfully secluded among trees and ferns and lush vegetation.

Nice B&B, very close to Volcano National Park. We took the "Orchid Suite" which is two rooms, one a nicely furnished upstairs bedroom, and the other is a very large loft overlooking the common area on the same level (and right next to) the bedroom. Our kids slept in the loft and we stayed in the bedroom. The loft is unusual in that it is open and doesn't lock (unlike the bedroom), and since our kids were in the loft, we did not lock the bedroom door in case they needed us at night. This was fine for us, since the whole B&B is small, owners are onsite and our kids are no longer toddlers, but I would not recommend it for parents of very small children. The host was helpful and gave us useful information about the area. Breakfast was filling and the coffee was incredible. They do mention that they try to get people in before dark because the place can be hard to find, but the GPS led us directly to it. Should not be a problem if you have a decent GPS, but if not, it can be a bit of a challenge. We were there in the winter and it gets cool at night (40s-50s), so the owner had a roaring fire going. The rooms themselves were very comfortable.

Room Tip: Orchid suite is good for families

Nice web site, the reality is a little different. Good proximity to park but a little tricky to find. Get there before dark. Many many stairs to access house and Orchid Suite. Hospitality was Ok but minimal. We woke to find there was no water due to a broken water pump: no showers, no brushed teeth, no working toilet. We had to track the hosts down to find out what was going on. Apologies, but no offer of any reduction of the $213 bill for the three of us.
We expected a better breakfast at a B and B other than store bought bread and boxed cereal.
Clean, but worn around the edges.
On a positive note, there was a nice fire waiting for us in the morning ( probably to make up for no water) and a lush view into the tropical surroundings.

The Tara Firma Inn, if you can find the cozy B&B in the enchanted rainforest, is a good choice to stay on your way to explore the Volcanoes National Park. The host was friendly and very helpful. He kept the fire going in the stove, which was nice to dry our clothes, after a rainy-day hike in the park. The coffee was ready early in the morning, and the light breakfast with the wonderful fruit was just right for a new day of adventure.

We stayed here on a last minute family vacation. Supreme location to Volcano Park and some great restaurants in Volcano. We even had the unique experience of seeing a chameleon from our breakfast table. We watched this little guy for over an hour. The owners are super nice and the rooms are cozy. Very affordable for this town where most places are pretty expensive. Definitely would recommend.

The proprietors have attitude issues that made for an unpleasant stay. The inn's website does not clearly indicate there's a $25 extra per person charge for more guests than two. That brought the per-night cost to $190 -- $215 with tax included, The hosts would not agree to eliminate the extra charge, nor would they consent to our request to shorten our stay from the two nights reserved to just one. Because a debit card was used for the booking, we had no recourse. The total cost of nearly $430 for two nights would have been exorbitant even if the hosts were accommodating. Breakfast can charitably be described as modest; nothing cooked is offered, and one of the main "dishes" is boxed cereal. You can do a lot better than Tara Firma when you visit spectacular Volcanoes National Park.

We were last minute travelers and ended up here because it was the only lodging with availability on Expedia when we booked our trip. Our host Fritz was friendly and made us feel comfortable. We had the Orchid Suite which has its own private bathroom, but the other suite room is a bed in an open air loft above the kitchen, so whover sleeps there will hear the hosts when they awake at 4:15AM and start preparing coffee and such. We liked the location - only a few minutes from Volcano National Park and close to good restaurants in Volcano Village (Kiawe Kitchen, Lava Rock Cafe). The light breakfasts prepared by our hosts were perfect for us, fresh fruit, breads, juice, etc. Our kids found it odd that we sat down to eat with strangers (other guests) at breakfast. I would not reccommend this lodging for a family traveling with children, but would be fine for a couple that wants a quiet place to stay near the park.
