The host of 'the volcano guesthouse' where we stayed told us the salad bar the Crater rim café, located in the military camp was where he went to eat sometimes. I had the sweet-and-sour pork, the other Entrée we had was a chicken dish, both very tasty, I took half home in the provided takeout containers. We Were also allowed to take home a complete take-out container full of salad bar fixings, Nice fresh vegetables, Lettuces, broccoli, etc...and a Soup bar, and baked potatoes. This place had the best value for your money with decent quality on the entire Island of Hawaii!

This is a recreation camp for the military. The cabins are old, most are remodeled, and it's inexpensive for military members. They offer the same tours that the big companies offer, for a fraction of the price. the Crater Rim Cafe offers good food at reasonable prices, and because an outside vendor operates it (as opposed to military), anyone can eat there. Breakfast buffet on Sunday is only $10.00 and if it doesn't fill you up, it's your fault.

We enjoyed breakfast and lunch here at reasonable prices. After viewing the active volcano early in the morning up the road at the Jagger Museum, it was great to warm up and have a hot breakfast without leaving the park. Nothing fancy, but omelets, pancakes and hot coffee certainly hit the spot! The dining room is open to the public even with no military connection. We enjoyed our seats by the fireplace,
