Robert the owner was friendly and the Pele suite was bigger than expected. Very close to Volcanco national park. They had bug spray and flashlights and jackets at night. Our room had a small fireplace that helped with warmth and ambience. Breakfast was yummy with papaya bowls, macadamenian nut pancakes and sausage and eggs. Our two boys loved this place as much as the Hilton Waikoloa.

We stayed one night at Aloha Junction B&B and we loved it! This is not an elegant or romantic getaway, but the closest you can get to living like the natives here and to learn about the life and the locals in this part of this magnificent island. Aloha Junction used to be a vacation lodging for the supervisors of the sugar plantations that once existed here and such, it is a large building with multiple spacious bedrooms.

We drove from our hotel in Waikoloa to Hilo and from there it was another 20 miles or so to Volcano Village, where this gem of a lodging place is located. Upon our arrival we were greeted by the owner, Robert, and his three very friendly dogs. We were accommodated in the "Pele Suite" which overlooked a large water tank and two rain tanks and a rusty shack, and I absolutely LOVED the rustic setting! The room was quite spacious and well-furnished with (very old but comfy) beds and furnishing and every thinkable amenity was within our reach, including free wi-fi. Robert explained the water tanks were there because there's no city water system there and they rely entirely on rain water, which is plentiful (it rained non-stop while we were there) and he said he collects more than 120 inches of rain water every year. Here, you are in the heart of the rainforest in a tiny community with one post office, one general store and a few other lodging and dining places--and less than a mile from Volcano National Park, where the active Kilauea still spews fumes and lava.

Next morning, we sat around a large breakfast table in a very delightful dining/living room, met two other families staying there as we delved into the delicious breakfast of fresh Papayas, freshly-made waffles, sausages and an assortment of jams and jellies and juices and hot coffee. We were sorry to leave that morning as we truly enjoyed our stay, but we know where to stay next time we're in the area: The Aloha Junction B&B for sure. :o)

Aloha Junction was excellent. Very clean, owner was friendly, affordable. We were the only ones staying there that night, so we had the run of the whole house! Loved it! The bed was amazingly comfortable pillow top (we stayed in the Heritage Room). Very close to Volcanoes National Park. Very convenient for us.

I wish we could've stayed longer, but our flight was cancelled and we had to book one for later, which threw off our travel plans. Robert was very accommodating about the whole crazy travel plan mix-up when others may not have been. Great breakfast! (loved the papaya boat and bananas and the mac nut syrup. Yum!)

Room Tip: I recommend the Heritage Room for couples.

When staying at Aloha Junction this time, we had our son and daughter with their spouses and children with us. We took three of the four rooms for our one night there. Robert has a gal to cook breakfast and clean for him at Aloha Junction. She prepared a wonderful and plentiful breakfast with eggs, pancakes, fresh fruit, rolls, coffee, etc. which was more than enough for us to get our day started.
We had hoped when we made the reservation months ago that the volcano might be sending lava down to the ocean as it did on a previous visit but there was no activity. The kids did see the Thurston Lava Tube, the glow of the main crater at night from the Jaggar Museum, and a few of the steam vents along the way. All four of the grandkids completed the Junior Ranger Handbook and were awarded the Junior Ranger certificate and badge while at the Visitors Center, a thrill for all each of them.
We like Aloha Junction because of its convenient location to the Park entrance, just two miles up the road, it's comfortable and Robert is an excellent host. We'll return again.

My good friend, Carol, and family (total 5), just returned from their recent visit and asked me to write a review to express what a lovely time they had, and how very pleased they were that they picked this place to stay! It was in a country setting, the room was spacious, even with their large group, there was room to walk around. Robert cooked a fabulous breakfast every morning! They were only a few miles from the main gate into Volcano National Park. They would highly recommend it to anyone going to the Big Island!

We got caught up exploring the island and arrived late, they left a key for us and explained what to do. The room was nice and spacious as well as clean. Breakfast was great!!! I really enjoyed the fresh papaya each morning and the mac nut pancakes with real maple syrup. Yard was nicely kept with an auomatic gate to keep the b&b private. Will definatley stay here again if in the area.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Aloha Junction B&B is located in Volcano Village just behind the Post Office noted for proximity to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park 1 mile away and restaurants in town. Guests also enjoy the 1930's old plantation structure providing five spaciousness rooms and electric blankets for those chilly nights in the rainforest. In addition free parking and well attended-to children are welcome. Each room has it's own coffee maker, mini fridge and microwave but best of all are Robert's breakfasts. One of his specialties are the Papaya-banana boats with macadamia-nut pancakes. After spending time in this "Drive-in" style National Park, most people want to include some evening time to walk out to the overlook of Halemaumau Crater ~ which convinces even the strongest skeptics that Kilauea is an active volcano. ... more   less
