Our family of four spent an entire day with Tyler hiking the crater in and around HVNP. We began our tour at around 2 pm and ended well past 8:30 pm. Tyler was full of information and very patient with the kids. We booked the tour with Haley who was extremely helpful in setting up everything and even gave us recommendations on stops along the coast when we drop up to HVNP from Waikoala. We did a 3.5 mile hike of one of the crates, visited the lava tubes, the museum and an art gallery during the tour. My only complaint was that my kids were very keen on seeing the actual lava flow. I had included this on my initial request with Haley, however, I kept thinking "we will get to it later" during the trip. We ended up not seeing any lava flow. Not sure if they did not plan it because they thought it may be a difficult hike for our kids (12 and 9)? I would clarify expectations from the beginning and discuss. Overall, a wonderful, informational experience for all.

Mahalo Nui Loa Sonal for taking the time to review us and share much needed feedback! We value and honor all feedback. We always take all clients suggestions to heart, which in turn help us maintain a five star reputation, that we have worked very hard to create and will work even harder to maintain. This review is quite helpful for any future client(s) who come to us with the goal of getting with in feet of active, surface flowing lava.

YES, we do take people out to see surface lava. However, there is only one way, hiking! But let me explain what exactly that hike requires. Currently, the hike today, to the surface flowing lava is an intense 7-8 mile hike round trip. Requiring one to hike over miles of constant jagged un-even terrain. Each step is on jagged rock glazed with silica (glass). People with any sort of hip, knee or ankle (joint) problems find this hike impossible. Athletes of all skill levels tend to find this hike challenging, but greatly rewarding. Not a good choice for small kids or an inexperienced or novice hikers.

Due to the difficulty of this hike, we have certain requirements, terms & conditions that need to be met in order to make the client eligible for this hike. Making sure you the client will be safe and have an enjoyable time. There also an age requirement of 12 years or older.

In your case, your nine year old did not meet our age requirement, so we custom created a tour that your whole family could enjoy. And we are thrilled to read that your tour with us overall was a wonderful & informational experience, even despite this mis-communication.

We have already in a private manner, but would like to reiterate we are sorry this information was not made more clear to you prior to your trip and at the start of your tour. We now have made improvements with your feedback; thoroughly explaining each clients' itinerary via our confirmation letter, a phone review 24 hours prior to set adventure date and lastly, at the start of each tour.

Thanks so much for coming out on trail with us Sonal and come back, we will have another adventure awaiting your arrival! Mahalo Nui Loa for choosing Akamai Adventure Tours & Travel while you were visiting the Island of Hawaii.

I want to echo all of the other excellent reviews posted here. 7 of us toured with Hayley on 6/30/13. Kids aged 6, 8, 10 + grandparents aged 65+. It was a very long day but everyone in our group was happy and engaged the whole time. I attribute this to Haley - she didn't specifically gear her comments to kids, or talk down to them, yet she was able to keep them as involved as the adults. Not an easy feat on a long day where you spend much of your time in a van. She had answers for EVERY question we asked, and she pointed out interesting facts and stories all day. We never felt rushed at any site - we took as much time as we needed/wanted at each of the stops we made, and everything seemed to be timed perfectly to get us back to the airport for our flight. I highly recommend touring the Big Island with Hayley/Akamai.

Haylay's knowledge of Hawaii and its culture is phenomenal. My husband and I and our 3 children (14yr boy, 12yr girl and 9yr boy) were mesmerized the entire time. There wasn't one question that we asked that she didn't have an answer. We learned about the volcanos and their history and scientific expectations in the future, the Ali'i of Hawaii, to the many stories of Captain Cook. Our friends and family have been amazed with how much our kids learned from that one day with Haylay. If you go to the Big Island a tour with Haylay is a MUST!

We did not plan to take a tour of the Volcano area, but our college age daughter wanted to see the lava flow, so we found Hayley at Akamai Adventure Tours. Hayley used our interests to create a personalize tour of the Puna area (Orchid Farm, Lava tree state park, Hilo Farmer's Market). Her knowledge of the area, cultural, historical, and natural was quite incredible.
I was very nervous about the uneven terrain of the hike to see the lava, but Hayley was prepared with gloves, head lamps, and knowledge; it was SO worth the effort! We were very lucky to see so much lava moving to the ocean and creating new land.
Hayley's personal touches made the experience extra special :)

Cant recommend these folks enough. I was looking for a big island tour from maui and wanted to avoid cross island big bus tours. I spoke to Haley on the phone and immediately realized this is exactly what i am looking for. When we arrived Hilo our tour guide Tyler met us at the airport. Tyler was courteous knowledgeable and perfect guide/friend to hang out with. both me and wife had a great time. He kept us engaged and catered the whole tour to what we wanted to do and see and at times recommended things that we later realized were worth seeing. there was no pressure of time no sales pitch. they even never asked to be paid up front. Like Tyler said, once you visit big island and take a tour with them you are know part of the family. if we ever to visit big island again we will be sure to look for these guys again. thanks for a great experience.

Thank NadBos
